Okay, this secret was the final straw. I've never played Sims, but I think I want to.

Should I get 2 or 3? (I ask because it seems like a lot of people still play 2)

Also, despite being unfamiliar with the game, I think that's kind of adorable, OP. :D

Not OP

I personally prefer Sims 2. I like the graphics better and it has more to do since it has more expansions. I also started with that game so transitioning to Sims 3 was too much.

I own both games though. They're both fun. I'd recommend looking through the legacychallenge community or something for legacies of both games and see which kind of thing you like more. If that makes sense.

Sims 2 is probably the best way to go if you've never played Sims at all I think.

I agree with the user above me that there is a lot more to do with all the expansions Sims 2 has not to mention the very active player-created websites that still exist.

Not to mention if your money-conscious you can probably pick up the majority of the Sims 2 expansions and stuff packs for very nice prices since they are not the 'current' sims out.

Sims 3, on the other hand, is rather nifty with the new things it can do and is alot more in-game custom friendly then I ever found Sims 2 to be.

In the end I suggest going to youtube and checking out some usermade vids (either on building houses, legacies, or even game intros) to figure out which one appeals to your tastes better.

Just be forewarn that no matter which version you get it does eat up a nice bit of space on your computer and is mildly addictive if you really get into it.

If you have a slower or older-model computer, I'd go with 2 (my computer is only 3 years old and Sims 3 sometimes lags and freezes for a minute or two). There's still really amazing custom content being created for 2 that makes the game look incredible, and the gameplay of 2 is still totally addicting. But if you've got a higher-end computer, I'd say Sims 3 all the way.

[identity profile] arathe.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Mine's about two years old, but it wasn't really top end when I got it, and the video card isn't anything to write home about. So 2 might be the better option for now.

Thanks! :D

From what I've heard of 3 and the 30 minutes I spent playing it at my sister's, I would get 2.

Sims 3 doesn't sound bad, and there are way more options for designing characters, but there's just SO MUCH to keep track of when it comes to gameplay. It felt more like I was just trying to keep my Sim alive and happy enough to continue doing basic functions rather than creating stories for them.

I *think* Sims 3 is more of an enforced Legacy house, where you just have that house in a neighborhood and you play THAT Sim (and any other Sims that join the family).

Wheareas, I think Sims 2 is a little more user-friendly when it comes to Sim!Needs, and I love that I can have a neighborhood of houses/families that each can be played separately and can also interact with the other houses. For instance, if Sim!Harry Potter invites Sim!Dean Winchester to his house, and they get into a huge fight, if I then go play the Winchester house for awhile, Dean would still be mad at Harry for the fight they had.

Also, if you're going to do Sims 2, I would recommend getting the NIghtlife and Seasons expansion packs. University and Apartment Life are okay (I don't have the others) but Nightlife and Seasons actually add to gameplay in all aspects, not just when a Sim goes to college or decides to live in an apartment.

Long comment is long, and I have to get ready for work, so I hope it makes sense.

Get 2. Way better, easily moddable, and far, far, faaaaar less glitchy.

[identity profile] zoey-says.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I personally prefer Sims 3 over Sims 2, but they both have their pros and cons.

The Sims 3 is the latest version, so they tend to cost more. But the first one has been out for awhile and I always see it on sale or bundled with other expansions for reasonable prices. On the other hand, I've seen Sims 2 frequently being sold at $20 per expansion. Sims 3 is still getting patches and being supported by EA. This can be good or bad, depending on how you look at it. The Sims 2 is "complete" so what you see is what you get, but this could be a lot less frustrations. I don't know what kind of computer you have, but a decent graphics card can make things a lot less annoying. Sims 2 has a lot of loading screens. Loading to go to university. Loading to go downtown. :/ I love the streamline loading of Sims 3. That's probably the biggest reason I prefer it. Also, Sims 3 has better customizing. You can change colouring and patterns of almost anything, so less custom files. Sims 2 isn't as flexible. In the end, it probably really depends on your computer. I know a lot of people can't run Sims 3, but can run Sims 2 fine.

Whatever you do, don't start with a Playstation Sims game.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so glad I'm not the only one!

The other night, I was thinking in terms of my green bar whether I would be able to make it through the next day and was estimating I was about 3/4 full.

[identity profile] chibi-kachi.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't feel bad OP! I queue up my sims with how I would do things too!

And I know, on more than one occasion, I've had the smirky thought of how awesomely green my bars would be!

Sometimes I wish motherlode was a real option in life too.

SIMS only becomes a problem when you realize you've forgotten to bathe for the day and forgone food in order to make sure your sims were ok. Then you need to go outside and just sit by yourself for a bit XD

[identity profile] tiger-pause.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to do this too. I also used to imagine the little green pluses or red minus signs when having conversations with people at work.

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I do that too, and I haven't played Sims in over a year since I haven't managed to get Sims 1, which is what I have and prefer, to work on my new computer T.T

[identity profile] juandalyn.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here, anon. Funnily not with the social bar, though...

Seems like I have no life.

[identity profile] johnnyabatti.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
This game fucked up a lot of people, possibly forever. I'm one of them, and I'm not afraid to admit it online where my identity is a bit of a secret anyways.

[identity profile] johnnyabatti.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Also, do you have more of those?

I haven't played Sims in months but I still find myself doing this. Wondering if my energy level is only a mild red or a deep, dangerous red and I must go to sleep NOW; imagining my hunger bar going to full pretty green when I make myself a good meal. After a while it just gets burned into your brain XD

[identity profile] impurrfectprof.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, I do the same thing sometimes...if only it made me better at managing my schedule.

[identity profile] johnnyabatti.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Sims secrets make me sad that I can't play The Sims Deluxe Edition anymore.

[identity profile] robintheshrew.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
That happens to most people with any games. I played a zoo game where you shook trees to get money and afterward every time I saw trees I resisted the urge to "click" them.

[identity profile] eastcoastfilly.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
After I got into Left 4 Dead, it kind of did this to me, especially after seeing some of the fan-made missions. First it was, "you know, [place I'm wandering in or have been too before] would make a cool level", which eventually worked it's way to "wow, if [place] actually got hit with Infected, we'd all last about five seconds."

I'm glad I'm not the only one! I've been playing lego Harry Potter and now every time a see a spherical lamp I want to Leviosa it to light it up and get money.

Which isn't how lamps works in the real world.

#11 OP, Are you me? LOL.
