I can't tell if you're a TV person or a book person; it sounds kind of like you're a tv person? If so ignore this post -- but know that a lot of the commenter above are coming from a place of a lot more exposure to the characters -- and exposure to people who hate them no matter WHAT they do, and excuse other characters doing much, much worse. If you are a book person:

I JUST CAME HERE TO SAY THAT!

I was so excited when my film class watched Double Indemnity and the profs brought up the fact that the noir genre frequently used coded homosexuality as well as the more overt femme fatales as part of the whole sex=danger vibe.

I'm pretty sure I was the only one melting at every little cigarette lighting and quip, but oh man... Theirs made for such a tragic tale.

It's actually a perfectly reasonable comparsion. They even happen at around the same age...

As I've stated from the beginning, this comic is better if you don't think too much about it. She finally started injecting some plot and it just makes me hate the main characters. Cain is a possessive dick and Abel is a spineless fuckdoll. Watching them have sex in the cockpit of their ship or whatever just makes me want the thing to explode with them in it. But I keep thinking that maybe the plot will go somewhere, Cain will learn how to be a human being an Abel will grow some balls. In either case, it only takes a minute or two out of my life to click on the comic's updates in my RSS reader.

A few years back I heard that the girl who'd bullied me and generally made me feel like crap in school had developed an eating disorder... and for all I know the correct response is 'oh well I guess she was just ~insecure~ all that time!' I'm just pleased she's miserable.

I feel only moderately guilty for this.

Funny you should mention Wile E. Coyote, when you look at Chuck Jones's rules for the Coyote, they could nearly all fit Team Rocket (with some minor tweaking for genre in a couple of cases).

Especially 3, 9, and 10 (The Coyote[Team Rocket Must get That One Damn Pikachu] could stop anytime—IF he were not a fanatic, The Coyote is always more humiliated than harmed by his failures[Team Rocket Blasting Off Again], The audience's sympathy must remain with the Coyote[Team Rocket Deserve Cookies and Hugs].

This is the funniest coolstory I have heard in a long while. Thanks for the laugh, OP.

There's nothing wrong with having an eclectic collection - joining the chorus in saying that I have a wide variety of stuff on my iPod. Honestly, there's no reason to limit yourself to one or the other if you like both. If your friends judge you for it, fuck 'em. Does it really matter that much that you like Korean pop and metal? Both are awesome genres, so just embrace that you have a wide variety of tastes! :D

[identity profile] immaculate.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
This this this, but only Germany, United States and Japan instead.

LOOK there are people who hate other people in every country, and there are people who will love you for who you are in every country, too. NO country is perfect and all of the comments demonizing Japan above are pretty disheartening.

Living long term in Japan half of my life and dating the same Japanese guy for the past 8 years... have only had outright racism happen to me a handful of times. I wouldn't continue to live her if every day was a literal shit-fest.

The people who felt so isolated while in Japan... do you speak the language? Do you understand that you cannot just go up to people and talk to them once and expect them to be your BFF? :-/ I always find it so hard to believe that people get treated so badly here.

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Well it does make you a more persistent, if not also more skilled troll so... more power to you?

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'll disagree about epithets. Sometimes I use epithets for stylistic reasons, and sometimes I use them to indicate the attitude of the p.o.v. character. (and occasionally, because I'm trying to make the word count right...) Those aren't excuses, they're reasons, and usually ones which the author has thought out beforehand. Your dislike of epithets under any and all circumstances is going to sound awfully ranty to any author who employs them the way I do. (Which may be why you get rants in return for your comments.)

I'll agree with you that concrit is hard. And frustrating, even if it's just a matter of diction, when the author doesn't respond.

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
You're probably better off looking for a good beta, who has been tasked with providing concrit, than hoping someone will pop up off the internet.

Personally, I will offer concrit on spelling and misused words, but little else, and then only on stories I think are worth the effort of fixing. So either you're a good speller and have a functional vocabulary or your stories aren't worth the effort. Your choice! (Me, I'd go with the former, and keep my ego happy.)

[identity profile] van.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
No, you're right. There are time when that'd work. A fic from Draco Malfoy's POV might very well say "the Mudblood" instead of Hermione or something. I just usually see it used in a "I don't want to say George" again way, and it makes no sense for the POV character to be thinking about her friend as "the brunette boy" or whatever. In one of my fandoms, they often said, "The curly haired rebel" which could refer to four different characters for instance. They used the professions of other characters for other epithets. That just comes off as a bad writing, and some sort of weird name-avoidance.

japanese people are people of color and therefore CANNOT be racist.

..?
Of course people of colour can be racist.

Wait, I'm meant to be reading this for the plot? Shit, I've been doing wrong. =/

But seriously, the comic's only two chapters in and incredibly detailed. Just leave it for five years, then go back it, thing's might have changed by then, it might have a plot. Or maybe not, and it'll just be mindless sex. But it'll still awesome art. Win/Win either way. At least for me.

But you're anon.

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
*snerk* Well, imprecise epithets are problematic, I'll agree. (Although Blake or Tarrant frequently sorts itself out according to who's aboard right now, and Jenna and Calla... whoops, sorry, got distracted by your icon, didn't I?)

As for epithets like "brunette boy", I'd be jumping up and down and saying "brunet" not "brunette" in that instance and not worrying about the pov character depending on how close focus the view is. First person? The speaker better be comparing one boy with brown hair to another with blond hair. (And possibly fixating on their follicles.) But third person omniscient? I'm a lot more forgiving.

In Holmes fandom we get the "doctor" and the "detective" a lot, but neither really bothers me, seeing as ACD used epithets in descriptions of events fairly often. Do I want them used constantly? Only for effect. But now and then is no biggie if names are used the majority of the time.

And, since I write a lot of drabbles, there is much I'll forgive for the sake of word count.

Ah, well, we all have things that scrape against our nerves! (Breath vs. breathe? Hoard vs. horde? Watch my head spin!) But it's fun to debate.

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Agh, they have it for Romeo and Juliet and Pride and Prejudice too. Horrifying. Quizzes in the back about the similarities between Mr. Darcy and Edward.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Or maybe we can just think of them as healthy women with amazing self restraint.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

In before wank! I personally agree with you, but social justice warriors do not. The way they see it, only white people can be racist. Yes, even in countries where the majority of people are not white and are (some of them, not all, obviously) racist towards others (white and people-of-color-not-like-them).

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
The best part about this role for Robinson is that it's NOT a gangster or bad guy - he's not being typecast.

Although I can't see shipping characters from this movie, but perhaps that's because it's so old, I tend to believe these sorts of media not only aren't worth pining over in that way (no fandom to join in on it), but it just feels kinda wrong. This is stuff that's miles above your Supernatural or your X-Men First Class in quality.

[identity profile] van.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't forget Dayna. I guess we can have five curly haired rebels! It usualyl does clear itself up, but it's still annoying and frustrating. I can see Avon maybe thinking of Vila as "the thief" or something, but I can't see Blake thinking of Jenna as "the pilot" or whatever. It just doesn't make sense. It's a literary device that, IMO, rarely does. It's one thing if you are imitating an author who used them (Conan Doyle, who was definitely writing in a different era that had different rules), or else for effect or something, but generally it's just jarring. Fortunately most people pick up on it when it's pointed out and make an effort to change it, but there are always those who think just because the Japanese translates into "dolphin" that character should always be called "the Dolphin" or whatever nonsense.

I don't think breath vs breathe or hoard vs. horde is something you can debate. I think you can probably debate some epithets, but sometimes the wrong word is wrong XD

(Anonymous) 2011-09-13 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
No, you're correct, they beefed them up in Sinnoh. By the time they get to Unova, they're actually incredibly competent. I missed most of Sinnoh, so I was horribly confused when I started watching Black & White, and they were actually doing a good job of setting up mischief and gathering info. They even work directly under Giovanni and he trusts them to do so. They treat it like this really super-serious secret spy stuff.

Someone here said that changes, but so far I'm 25 episodes in and they haven't reverted yet so that's basically an entire season's worth of Competent Team Rocket

Personally, I liked them better as idiots whose bumbling nature drives the plot, like in the 4th Pokemon Movie - they're not useless, stuff they do is actually important in that movie even if they're messing up.

I didn't want to look like a jerk and say it but... yeah, you're totally right.
