I'm a lesbian, but I do wonder if all the shows I grew up on about people in their 30s and 40s (including Sentinel and SG-1 - SGA started when I was 23) contributed to the fact that my preferences seems to be for women who are about 15-20 years older than I am.

I think I suffer from a bit of this. And I'm fairly certain it's because of TV/movies too, anon. Most of the people I have crushes (fannishly or otherwise) on are anywhere from their late 20s to their early 40s. Nearly all of them are at least ten years older than I am. Oh well.

If it makes you feel better in any way, I know a girl who started dating her Sociology teacher in high school when she was 17 and he was... 49. They're married now. That's 32 years of difference.

I also know a girl who's 20 dating a 40 year-old guy and another girl who is 15 years younger than her boyfriend. It's not that uncommon. We don't really choose who we are attracted to and we definitely don't choose who we fall in love with.

LOL, are you me, OP? My first celeb crush was on a guy 33 years older than me, and now I'm 22 and dating a 47 year old man. I feel like... I can smile, feel good about myself and laugh again. He's intelligent, handsome, and has an incredibly quick wit. There are downsides, of course, but I've tried to date men my own age, but those relationships ended very badly.

Well, thanks to society young women + old men are not much of a rarity. If you're a guy I guess the age gap would be the least thing society would condemn you for (sadly). But try young man + old woman. People will find you gross and always assume you couldn't score with younger, "pretty girls".

I feel you OP, but in the reverse. I'm only attracted to younger guys, and I'm pretty sure it's partially due to the things I watched and read growing up. I've tried finding older guys attractive, but I just can't. It sucks having such a specific, age-related aesthetic/attraction; too many people think you're being stubborn and just don't want to get over it. It'd be nice for people to not see me as a cougar-in-training or something like I've heard and understand that it's more or less fighting a battle against your own nature. But you never know who you might meet who is in a complementary mindset! Keep your options and mind open and see what happens. I wish you luck ♥

This is kinda weird to me. I saw the Sentinel in my early teens and I thought Jim was so old! I didn't like Blair either, even though he was closer in age, I just thought he looked weird. I rewatched it at 30 and I wanted them both.

I can't really say about SGA, I watched it at my late twenties and thirties so all my crushes were more or less appropriate.

In short, I think that it's not The Sentinel that made you a pervy older men fancier, you just liked Jim because you like older men in general.

At first I didn't relate to this secret, but then I remembered that I have the BIGGEST crush on Peter Facinelli (Carlisle from the Twilight movies) and now I get it. Don't feel ashamed, OP. Soooo many people have different standards for who they want to fall in love with or who they feel attracted to. I have like, at least 30 weird standards, so no worries. You like what you like, man. I'm getting married to a man 33 years my senior. I think he's sexy as hell. Yes, I know that he'll probably die before me, but that's not guaranteed. The way I see it is this: I'd rather marry an old man that I love than grow old with a man that I hate (or only sorta like).

Anyway, the point is that there's nothing wrong with liking older men. Just know that all the rules to having a good relationship still apply. You gotta have intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and sexual compatibility.
