Yeah, pretty much.

The thing I always want to know is how people decide whether the stories you write are "okay" or "the kink." Is that something the reader just guesses based on how well you write, or based on whether you write it harrowingly enough or not?

Personally, I don't see how you can draw that line unless you're personally acquainted witht he ficthor in question. At which point it becomes "Gee Sheila, it skeeves me out that you wrote that." "Uh, sorry, Fran."

I really do get where you're coming from- I can't deny that there's something fairly depraved about this particular kink. Regardless, it is a kink. And a fairly common one, out in the real world. Straight-laced husbands and wives [who have never heard of kink-memes and non-con] roleplay rape scenarios in their bedrooms. For reasons unknown, some people get off to rape fantasy, just like some people are turned on by BDSM and tentacles. I'm sorry it makes you so uncomfortable [and that's a legit, non-sarcastic sympathy], but it's unlikely to ever go away. Is it disturbing that it's become so acceptable? Yeah, but I think that's been inevitable. Just try and look the other way. Fantasizing about rape isn't the same as condoning real-life violation; it's just a fetish.

Re: TB!2

(Anonymous) 2011-09-18 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally I think a lot of it has to do with not being in control and/or the humiliation that goes along with it [and humiliation can go with BDSM and a number of other, non-rape related kinks as well so take that as you will]. I know of some people do it *because* they feel guilty always having to be the one 'in charge' as it were, in their sexual relations with their partner.

That said, there are reasons the terms non-con and dub-con are used, and those have been discussed so many times in this comm it's old news by now.

All else aside (we have had long threads here about the use of the terms dubcon and noncon) I agree so hard about using rape as a plot device. It pisses me off so much, and kinda reminds me of something that happend in an RP I was in. My friend's character had a completely amazing, well thought out arc where her character was raped that explored all the problems the character had afterwards. Then a few months later some other people on the site used rape as a plot device because they were bored and wanted drama. I pretty much raged for a while after that.

/cool story bro

I think rape as a standalone story can be interesting, but if it's just brought up like that, that sounds like bad storytelling. One of the best fics I've read involved a main character being raped and dealing with the consequences, but what you're saying just sounds REALLY lazy.

[identity profile] copper-dimes.livejournal.com 2011-09-18 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Can anyone decipher this? I know it has something to do with the OP being annoyed at people positively reviewing their old fanfic, but squinting at it around the odd font and bad jpeg quality is making my head hurt.

Re: NS!2

I got to "There is better out there, much much better" and then I couldn't keep going either.

Maybe the rest explains why they don't just take it down if they hate it so much.

"Dear people who still positively review my 10-year-old Harry Potter fan fiction: There is better out there. Much, much better. Go read it. Thanks for the sentiment, but this stuff is outdated and bad and written by a 14-year-old. Also, I overcompress my image files."

"Worst season ever" because the Doctor fucked up and then made a dubious ethical decision? You realise he does that all the fucking time?

I, for one, am glad the writer didn't pussy out and actually had the Doctor make a questionable choice. If everything we ever see the Doctor do is black and white, how can we ever hope to understand what he is TRULY like?

The ending is what made this episode stand out as excellent.

All that said, she herself convinced Rory to choose that action. She could have tried to persuade him to go the other way, but she didn't.

Is this in response to 'the Girl Who Waited' or 'God Complex'? I can't tell...

Either way...yeah on the one hand, he should have let Amy make her own decisions, but on the other hand, his TARDIS, his choice...

Well, I'm glad you have the maturity not to create wank about it. As for the rest, I forgive you. Maybe with luck you'll get a little perspective at some point and be able to let it go without your inner rage machine being lit up.

Titc: This secret is fucking with my brain. Is it a troll secret responding to trolls or someone out there is naive enough not to know pedofinder general is a troll?

TB2: Not everyone can be ok with everything. That's pretty normal, even if in other aspects you're cool with stuff.

You know what? Fuck you. That's it, okay? Fuck you. I've had an incredibly shitty day and I don't feel like listing all the reasons you're a worthless waste of air, so just fuck you and the kink-policing horse you rode in on.

Why am I now picturing a BDSM style tack on a horse? : /

Re: TB2

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-09-19 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
yeah honestly i want to respond civilly because OP apparently doesn't start shit and she can't help being squicked by it but um

this argument always really fucking pisses me off because it's like people cannot express the thought "i dislike/am creeped out by rapefic" without being INTENSELY JUDGMENTAL and kind of horrible about it

...and making statements like "IT'S NOT SEXY" and all i want to say is "uh fuck you" because FOR SOME PEOPLE IT IS! fictional rape, that is, not real rape obviously. and there is nothing you can do about that! i'm sorry! but actually! i'm not sorry! it makes me very angry!! and the discussion always ALWAYS devolves into "omg but a rape fantasy is an oxymoron you can't have a rape fantasy because then it wouldn't be rape!!!!" and i want to bang my head into a wall

TB1: vriska/tavros is pretty repugnant no matter how you look at it. i mean, she kind of kills him?? swapping the genders just makes it more blatantly creepy. oh troll romance...

TB2: ha ha but people aren't going to stop being turned on by it no matter how hard you JUDGE them ooh

TITC: haha! but this is one of the reasons why pedotroll anon is so terrible. it really trivializes the concept of actual pedophilia.

TB1

[identity profile] saiyako.livejournal.com 2011-09-19 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not even the killing that bugs me so much as that she crippled him and then tried to make him apologise for being crippled. And she smacks him down hard every time he tries to stand up to her. Their relationship isn't even healthy for trolls, imo.

Honestly I get it OP. Rapefic makes me extremely uncomfortable (actually no, if I tried to read them I know I'll get triggered and have a panic attack so for my own sanity I just ignore them) but sadly we can't do much about it except ignore them because people will always get off on them, no matter how much you say you're against it. So you'll have to learn to accept it and deal with it and I know it sucks but there really is no other option.

Just know that you're not alone.

TB2

[identity profile] fenrischained.livejournal.com 2011-09-19 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
On the one hand, OP, I can see where you're coming from. But on the other...

I'm not ashamed to say that the idea - note: the idea, not the action - turns me on.

I am also not ashamed to say that I'm a rape survivor myself.

And yes, I understand that some people read and write rapefic as a coping mechanism. I am also also not ashamed to say that I am not one of them. I read rapefic because, when it's entirely fictional and nobody is actually getting hurt, I find it hot. I write it in my RPs because it works as a plot point.

I will not be ashamed of this. I will not say that it devalues the real and present trauma of rape. I am very, very aware that I am lucky to be as untraumatised as I am by what happened to me, and, frankly, I am not going to be made to feel guilty for enjoying fictional rape any more than I am going to be made to feel guilty for having actually been raped.

tl;dr - I'm a rape survivor with a totally unrelated rape kink, I write rape as a hurt/comfort device, and I will not be ashamed of any of those things.
