They spend so much time building hype for FF games I can't imagine actually looking foward to any of them anymore. I assume the fans just go OMG YEAH THIS THING oh well I'll check again in two years...

Then there are the unrealistic expectations they have to deal with once the game is released. But I guess so long as the game sells well it doesn't matter.

Personally, I've always felt Nomura's overwhelming influence with the later games is what killed the series. He was good as a sometimes character designer, but now his trademark zippers and belts and angsty shit is just too much and overrides any true story to be found.

But I still, as a FF fan, hope this game will be good...

...What do you mean by later games? (Not sure which have had Nomura's touch)

Because FFX is still mostly loved by the fandom, and fits many of the things you mentioned above.

He had nothing to do with 12.

The only real series with his influence is Kingdom Hearts.

11 and 12 are flops in the mainstream world. Only their dedicated fans even like them. Hell, most FF fans haven't even played 12 long enough to be introduced to all of the characters.
Nomura has been the face and designer of all the games/media relating to the big FF stuff since basically KH came out.

It can't be that the current gen FF games are actually shit, absolutely not.

Square Enix doesn't sell the consoles they used to. I loved their RPGs back in the day but RPGs are so few and far between these days - unless you have a DS. They must be doing something wrong if the few console RPGs they make haven't made me want a PS3 or an Xbox 360 like I wanted a PS1 and PS2. The problem isn't the system, it's their games.

Apparently there's a lot of RPGs that never get released in the western world because they'd flop, since the majority of players wants FPS/adventure/whatever.

There are a couple exceptions, sure, but I'd wager that the problem aren't their RPGs (though I agree that the quality is declining) but the playerbase's mentality.

For example, apparently there's an awesome new Tales game coming out for the PS3 (Tales of Xilia) and no plans to ever release it here in Europe or in America.

I've started betting that the game is never actually going to be released (much like KH3)...

Seriously, it's supposed to be in production since FFXIII. FFXIII-2 is getting released later this year (January for the US release, I believe) and apparently there's a website for FFXIII-3 already...

So yeah, are we ever gonna' see Versus? Doubt it.

Oh KH3, maybe one day my grandchildren will be able to buy it! I think Square and EA are in competition to see who can both control and infuriate their fans more, and they show off at E3 and laugh at our pain.

I honestly think they'll just keep making hand-held KH games and profit in the player's expectations. :/

I initially though KH3 would come with the PS3, but alas... maybe we'll be lucky to see it for the PS4!

I really really really want Sony to just let the PS4 for a little while. The PS3 is a solid system, it and the games just need a bit more TLC. Let Microsoft and Nintendo battle it out for who can release the most systems the fastest.

I will admit, I am such a KH fangirl that I probably keep buying the handheld games to get my fix. Except Recoded, that was a bucket of sad.

It's taking them a long time because (according to the last round of articles I read) they're programming the game to be real time action, so essentially, no more pre-loaded cutscenes, stuff will happen around you in time with your playing.
I am disappointed they haven't updated the FF13V website because they have finally released more character names and info. It'll be coming but its going to take them a lot longer than FF13 Movie because you'll actually get to interact with your world. Or at least, I'm hoping that's what's up.
If I'm not mistaken they might also have a smaller team and once 13-2 is done, they'll focus more people on 13V's production.

Wait that's not exactly right, there's been a huge backlash against Nomura in recent years from both casual and hardcore Square fans. Some of it's deserved, some of it not so much. He just happens to be the current face of the company.

I agree with you on both points. It is indeed a very polarizing feeling, wanting to see something become awesome but wanting to shut up obnoxious fanbrats at the same time.

There is, however, a point in your secret that made me go "huh?": "...and the only reason FF games aren't succeeding this gen is because they aren't PS3 exclusives".

What? I mean, WHAT?! Do people honestly say that? How does that even make sense?! Making it exclusive to just one console means that LESS people get the chance to play it, not MORE. Just. What.

This is an extremely common sentiment in the J-fandom. Xbox = Westerners, and Westerners = dumbing it down; ergo, Xbox release means they'll dumb it down.

And no, none of them will ever play Mass Effect, because there is no kawaii. Er, I mean, it's obviously been dumbed down for the the Western audience.

It's because the XBOX360 doesn't have enough space per dvd disc compare to a blu-ray disc. Hence, content was cut, things had to be redesigned, videos had to be compressed (try to find 360 vs PS3 comparison vids for FF13). Also, the port caused a delay in the release date for the game, which made oh so many people oh so salty, especially PS3 owners.

Some of the content in 13-2 was supposed to be in 13 mind you. For example, Lightning and Serah's house etc.

Ohhh. Okay. I see. Loss of quality and loss of content sound like more reasonable arguments.

However, I think that if the game is good enough, it would still triumph regardless of the trimming.

Dun dun dunnnn~ Modern Warfare 2, an FPS, did quite well in Japan (and it's not KAWAII UGUUUUU either). She's only looking in from god knows what point of view, and not really taking into account what actual GAMERS really think.

Uh, no? That actually is a pretty common sentiment in the J-fandom. I don't know what the argument against it is in the Western fandom, though you've filled us in on that, which is interesting, thanks.

Well, ariseishirou is partly right. There was (is?) a stigma against the Xbox with Japanese origin games. Since Xbox is a product of Microsoft (a Western company) as opposed to Sony and Nintendo which are both Japanese. It took a long time for Xbox to make it there and I think it's still not highly regarded.

niorapth is partly right too. Both systems have 2 different DKs that both cost a lot of money to license. Since the Xbox isn't as popular in Japan, you could save money by just releasing it exclusively for the PS. Not to mention the extra money to hire developers and manufacturing the product. By opting to be exclusive they could use that money they saved to add more to the game.

So, it's really the combination of arguments of why there are people that say multi-console releases are bringing the FF series down.
