(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 01:48 am (UTC)(link)There is, however, a point in your secret that made me go "huh?": "...and the only reason FF games aren't succeeding this gen is because they aren't PS3 exclusives".
What? I mean, WHAT?! Do people honestly say that? How does that even make sense?! Making it exclusive to just one console means that LESS people get the chance to play it, not MORE. Just. What.

And no, none of them will ever play Mass Effect, because there is no kawaii. Er, I mean, it's obviously been dumbed down for the the Western audience.

It's because the XBOX360 doesn't have enough space per dvd disc compare to a blu-ray disc. Hence, content was cut, things had to be redesigned, videos had to be compressed (try to find 360 vs PS3 comparison vids for FF13). Also, the port caused a delay in the release date for the game, which made oh so many people oh so salty, especially PS3 owners.
Some of the content in 13-2 was supposed to be in 13 mind you. For example, Lightning and Serah's house etc.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 03:12 am (UTC)(link)However, I think that if the game is good enough, it would still triumph regardless of the trimming.

Also, that arisishirou is joking right? About how Japanese people won't play Western games? Because..
http://kotaku.com/5428547/modern-warfare-2-spiked-xbox-360-console-sales-in-japan
Dun dun dunnnn~ Modern Warfare 2, an FPS, did quite well in Japan (and it's not KAWAII UGUUUUU either). She's only looking in from god knows what point of view, and not really taking into account what actual GAMERS really think.

You do get that you're proving my point with this article, don't you? E.g. popular Western games don't sell at anywhere near a comparable rate in Japan as popular Japanese games do in the West, and that the 360 sales are pitiful and anti-360 bias is rampant?
no subject
Popular Japanese games sell in the West? Tell that to Tales, tell that to Bust-a-Move, tell that to -gasp- the Mega Man series, tell that to Monster Hunter etc. The only current success for Japanese games in the west right now are fighting games.
And comparing the two markets together when one market has the advantage of being a niche market, and the other being mainstream? Smart. Western games are a niche in Japan, and Japanese games are a niche in the West. The difference here is that there are more people in the Western niche market than Japan. Of course sales for Japanese games in the West are going to be better - THEY HAVE MORE PEOPLE.
Also, do note that the WEST - not just America. Until recently, Hong Kong and most of South East Asia have been playing the North American region of English games, and this counts for more sales under 'Western' whereas the sales for the Japanese version is only accountable for in Japan. Of course it's going to look smaller in comparison - less people are buying it. The fact that it sells, though only in a few thousands, is already an impressive feat, considering its smaller market in Japan.
If we want to get 'racist' with this, then you do notice that the PSP is DEAD in the West right? Same sentiment. Same hate. It's not just ~Japanese gamers~ hating on the West.
(Also, anti-360 is not just a J-fandom thing. If anything, I've seen Westerners hate on it more than the Japanese, with the RRoDs, monthly online subscription fees and all that. Sides, most of the Japanese people don't actually hate on Microsoft do they? With it being one of the few OSes supporting direct Japanese typing)

In fact, "DON'T SELL" isn't an argument I ever made. It doesn't even appear in my comments. You made it up completely, because one Kotaku article about games sales is all you've got to back up your argument.
But, in attacking even a made-up argument, you're still completely wrong:
(Source (http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/))
Sales of MW2 in Japan - 420,000 units
Sales of MW2 in the Americas (not the "West", just the NA region) - 13 million
To be sure, THEY HAVE MORE PEOPLE, as you say, in the NA region - about three times more - but not over thirty times more. And MW2 is one of the best-selling console FPS games in Japan, ever. Look at Gears, or Halo, or even Resistance - their Japanese sales are absolutely pitiful.
But I see the rest of this is backpedalling about Japan being a "niche" market, so it doesn't really matter if it only sells a few copies! You forget, this is the same "niche" market that moved two million units of FFXIII. They certainly do have a considerable market share. It has plummeted in recent years, but it was as high as 50% of the global game market as recently as 2002 (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/click_online/9159905.stm).
Popular Japanese games sell in the West? Tell that to Tales, tell that to Bust-a-Move, tell that to -gasp- the Mega Man series, tell that to Monster Hunter etc. The only current success for Japanese games in the west right now are fighting games.
Er, yes, that's exactly what I said. Japanese games - like DMC, RE, MGS, Pokemon, Mario, etc. - do sell in the West. But the opposite is simply not true. So... you're still proving my entirely correct point that Western game sales are pitiful in Japan compared to the sales of Japanese games in the West, which is what I actually said, instead of DON'T SELL, which is something you made up entirely.
Seriously, try to calm down. The "kawaii" comment was a bit snarky, but I'm making objectively true claims about the respective gaming markets. I know there are a tiny minority of Japanese gamers who play Western games - I'm friends with a ton of them. They're completely awesome people. And not everyone who likes JRPGs is a weeaboo - I'm a big Atlus fan myself.
I can pull actual games sales stats all day if you want, and all you seem to have is one Kotaku article that actually proves my point (that 360 sales are pitiful and even MW2 - one of the top-selling games of all time - didn't move that many units comparably in Japan).

But no, you're too wrapped up in WEST VS J and arguing on ~feelings~ instead of technicality.
Newflash - most Japanese gamers don't even CARE about Western gamers, since nearly ALL FF games are translated into English anyway, and in now's case, both are released nearly simultaneously, hence the 'Western' audience not getting any add ons.
I don't know what kind of 'J-Fandom' you're lurking at, but do note that most of the J-fandom doesn't mind the 360 as much as you're making them. People got it to play im@s after all (and Tales of Vesperia... but that's another story).
no subject
All Japanese gamers are FF players? What? How do you explain the massive explosion of hostility and the STOP LOCALIZING WESTERN GAMES SQUENIX and the death threats to the developers from Japanese gamers when FFXIII was announced for the Xbox, then?
But no, you're too wrapped up in WEST VS J and arguing on ~feelings~ instead of technicality.
....Er, given this lengthy and hostile tirade, I'm beginning to suspect I'm not the one arguing on account of 'feelings', bro.
If you must know, I've been hanging out in the Fallout/CoD/Dead Space side of J-fandom, and yes I do hear an awful lot of shit directed at both Western gamers for ruining the industry and at my 360-owning Japanese friends who play Western games for being, basically, traitors who are ruining the industry.
no subject
Funny, I lurk at the Japanese side of the fandom too. Apart from the usual rants against Western GAMERS, they have nothing against the developers themselves. If so, Capcom, Square, Taito etc would all be gone now, since they've been 'localizing' since the 80s. What, a few death threats == the whole fandom is nuts now?
FFXIII was not announced for the 360 just for the ~west~ though. It was for both regions. They argued based on what I said - technicality. They KNEW the 360 can't handle the length and features of what Square originally promised. They weren't being asshats to the West, they were being asshats because they're getting a trimmed down experience.
Pfft, a few flamers makes the whole fandom now? The amount of fans of the games outweigh the more vocal flamers.
no subject
Depends entirely which fandom, I found. I've been reasonably active in the Japanese fandoms for Biohazard, DMC, and SMT for years, and aside from the occasional random racist, who was certainly not indicative of the entire group, as you say, everything was just peachy. I had exactly the same view of J-fandom that you did. Welcoming and actually pretty awesome, but with the same number of random crazies you'd find here.
Then I moved on to you-ge fandoms and it like night and day. It is no longer a happy love in welcoming funtimes; idiots flame us constantly. Even some of my old friends from the RE/SMT fandoms have been up in arms about me liking shooters (though that's only to be expected, whitey likes them guns).
And yes, when I ask why more Japanese people don't play Western games - even games all about character development and even dating, like ME - one of the most common answers is that it's not cute enough (or there aren't enough cute girls, etc.). It's just the truth.
They argued based on what I said - technicality.
Nah, it wasn't. There was a lot of that to be sure, but it brought out a shitton of people crying about the takeover of the evil foreign 360, and that they shouldn't be supporting foreign console developers by giving Japanese gamers the choice to play games on it. If they bought a 360, they only get to play "shitty" you-ge.
Still don't agree with me about the anti-Western bias amongst Japanese gamers? Well, the CEO of Square-Enix (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/96584-Squeenix-CEO-Calls-Out-Japanese-Gamers-on-Western-Bias) does (note that one of the reasons is the poor sales of MW2, which pretty much destroys any point you had posting it as "proof" that Japanese gamers aren't).
I'm prettttty sure he knows his shit better than you. And what he's say is certainly in line with my experience, too. So yeah, we'll have to agree to disagree about personal experience, but facts and authoritative sources are on my side on this one. You haven't provided anything but anecdotes, with an obvious (and highly emotional) pro-Japanese bias.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 07:37 am (UTC)(link)niorapth is partly right too. Both systems have 2 different DKs that both cost a lot of money to license. Since the Xbox isn't as popular in Japan, you could save money by just releasing it exclusively for the PS. Not to mention the extra money to hire developers and manufacturing the product. By opting to be exclusive they could use that money they saved to add more to the game.
So, it's really the combination of arguments of why there are people that say multi-console releases are bringing the FF series down.
