I really liked both movies but I think I liked Captain America a little better, yeah. Also as mentioned in the comments to another secret, Captain America is patriotic but not ridiculously nationalistic.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
...I don't really get this secret. You're saying it like it's a problem that you liked Captain America better. They may be set in the same universe, but they're both different movies with different tones, therefore different forms of appeal. Is it just because you're into Norse mythology, so you feel like you're supposed to like Thor better? Just asking out of honest curiosity.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
OP: Not a problem, just very unexpected. I'm not really into super-heroes generally speaking, which is probably why I ended up needlessly comparing them.

I liked both movies, but Captain America was better. Thor's pacing wasn't great, and other than Thor and Loki, the characters were pretty flat. Captain America spent more time on the build-up and because of that had much better pacing and the secondary characters were more fleshed out and enjoyable.

[identity profile] hermione-vader.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved them both. They were both comic book adaptations, but they were purposely very different---maybe high fantasy doesn't gel with you? Let's not pit them against each other.

[identity profile] cyren-2132.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I was SO disappointed in Thor. I don't see how anyone could have liked it better than Captain America (and I've never picked up a single comic or video for either of them before, so it's not like I went in terribly biased.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
And what disappointed you then? Underwhelmed, I'd understand, but since you didn't know the source material, you could have hardly had any expectation either, or did you?

I think part of what was problematic with Thor was that Kenneth Branaugh, while a director whose work I DO enjoy when its what he does best (Shakespeare), was not the best choice for a comic hero movie. I mean realistically he didn't write the script so there was some of that. I felt like Thor's friends were great characters who we only scratched the surface of. I mean FFS one was played by Tadanobu Asano!! He's a great actor! I think the issue might have been too many characters, not enough time.
I think what Branaugh did well was the look of the film (it was a good looking film), but there was something lacking in the script and that's not entirely his fault.
Whoever wrote Captain America did a better job and the characters were more fleshed out. It was just a better story.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm almost certain not one American cares if you've been rolling your eyes at their patriotism.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I am crushed to learn that. Crushed!

captain america was defs better imo, i am so confused that most people seem to like thor more, honestly. =\

[identity profile] riah-chan.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I love the Thor movie better but that is because Chris Hemsworth is one of the most beautiful people I've seen in my life and he spends the movie doing things like wrestling in mud and not wearing a shirt. Plot is secondary to my enjoyment of this...

Captain America is definitely the better plotted movie though.

[identity profile] ncc-gqmf.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sort of surprised by this thread, only because I finally saw Captain America last night, and I thought Thor was way better. Captain America wasn't terrible, but I found it pretty dry and underwhelming.

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Patriotism annoys you. Oh okay, fine that's your opinion.

Patriotism annoys you ESPECIALLY when it's Americans doing it. Never mind then. You're just an idiot.

That being said, CA was just a better movie imo. Thor is a very pretty movie and is tons of fun, but CA just did almost everything better, so yeah.

I'm the opposite, and I'm getting the impression that those who like Thor better are actually in the minority. Don't get me wrong, I liked Captain America a lot, but Thor for me was the best movie of the summer.

I like both but I liked Captain America better too because I liked Peggy way more than Jane and I like Cap's romance with her better. Which is funny because I love Natalie Portman but I didn't like her that much in Thor.

I loved them both, but I though Captain America was better. It had a lot more heart to it and it was so easy for me to love Steve Rogers. Thor was funnier though.

Plus, CA had Dominic Cooper and Sebastian Stan, so it gets extra points for that. And Peggy was a lot more interesting than Jane.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
I watched Thor because a friend of mine fell head over heels in love with it and she usually has pretty good judgement, but came out severely disappointed. I'm up to my ears in the fandom now, but that's only because Loki latched onto my brain and somehow managed to transcend his source material, and make everything associated with him do the same. But every time I rewatch Thor, I'm disappointed all over again. Weird experience.

I watched Captain America because I want to see The Avengers with full knowledge of the backstory and mentally refer to it as The Continued Misadventures of Loki, and was disappointed by that one as well. However, the characters overall were much more interesting and likeable, and objectively speaking, the writing was much better. Steve is adorbs and Peggy was fantastic and it broke my heart that they were separated, but not even they inspire the same level of borderline-obsession Loki does.

So, speaking as someone more accurately described as a Thor fan than a Cap America fan, I have to say I agree with you. :) Overall, I have to say I found the Iron Man films were the best of the bunch so far.

[identity profile] captain-emily.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in the minority that liked Thor better. I liked the mythology, the story, and the eye candy.

Also, I really dislike Captain America. (So I freely admit that my choice is probably biased.) I've never been a fan of the character, and the only reason I went to see the movie was because I wanted to have all the back story before Avengers comes out. It was ok, but I probably won't buy a copy or watch it again.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Well, they're pretty different; guess it just depends on your style. I liked Thor better, but I liked XMFC better than either, so, y'know.

I loved both equally, to be honest.

[identity profile] damnated.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
I ended up finally watchinh Thor a few weeks ago, and besides the hot actors (which admittedly spruced up the whole thing for me) I didn't find it special at all? At least, from the hype, I was hoping for something better.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Most comments online i read were actually rather negative, but that's not the reason i will probably never watch this movie. i just can't stand watching anything related to the world wars (or wars at all), bc i know real people died and i don't like to be reminded where my german grandfather fought. Only reason i watched inglorious basterds is bc my best friend told me they kill Hitler and who doesn't want to see that?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked both a lot, but I preferred Captain America over Thor, and tbh a lot of it probably had to do with being biased as Cap is my favorite Avenger. I think I was in hysterics for the whole movie.

My partner watched both with his sister and her bf, the sis/bf hated both, but my partner was all over Thor, he thought it was the best one so far, whereas he hated Captain America for "too much dialogue and not enough action". I thought there was more dialogue in Thor because, well... that's Thor.

His best friend hated Captain purely because of he believed they killed off Red Skull. But then again, he's the kind of guy that hates anything that isn't the particular canon he's familiar with. Which blows my mind in and of itself.
