Hmmm. I go the other way: I can't related to most female characters because I find them all too weak, insecure, whiny, or else too stereotypically "bitchy"-- can't a woman be strong without being snide, spiteful, hypocritical, or needing to be beautiful and untouchable?

But then, I'm likely sexist, too, so eh. No one's happy with the way woman in general are portrayed, I think.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-22 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
How would this make you sexist?

I think stereotyping them is awful (especially making them "bitchy" or untouchable). I think it's fine if female characters are snide/spiteful/hypocritical though, as long as they're well-written and not turned into The Bitch.

How would this make you sexist?

I don't know, but I'm sure someone will find it so. I almost never comment on women, female role models, feminism, gender roles or studies, etc. at all anymore because I'm just told that I'm sexist or that it's great that I have an opinion that's useless. So most of the time I just stay sitting down and shutted up.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Are you a woman?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
not op obviously but being a woman doesn't matter in these kinds of arguments. As a woman with similar views I can tell you you will be told you are still being sexist/misogynistic and its worse because you're a woman you should know better than to do this other girls therefore yourself yada yada ya blah blah blah

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
i was asking because if they're not a woman they bloody well ought to sit down and shut up

I know exactly what you mean and I could tell that's why you disclaimed your op. Oh internet politics

(Anonymous) 2011-10-22 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't related to most female characters because I find them all too weak, insecure, whiny, or else too stereotypically "bitchy"

That's funny. You sound "whiny" and "bitchy" enough to me.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-22 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
No, she really doesn't. You, on the other hand sound quite offended. Those traits hit too close to home?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-22 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not offended at all. And yeah, she really does.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-22 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmm yes, heaven forbid she can't identify with neither the Bella Swan-ish damsel-that's-always-but-not-really-in-distress stereotype nor the my-terrible-attitude-is-empowering ice-queen/man-with-breasts stereotype. Yes, how very whiny to want a character that's not some silly extreme but a well-developed character. I suggest you read some of the rest of this thread.
Really though, there is nothing wrong with what lykomancer said, nor with the way she said it, which leads me to believe you are personally ruffled.

[identity profile] lykomancer.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
my-terrible-attitude-is-empowering ice-queen/man-with-breasts stereotype

Sort of. I don't view it as "man-with-breasts" as it's portrayed as being TOO dominant-- it becomes "I must be AGGRESSIVE and CUTTING and MEAN because others will perceive me as a WEAK WOMAN if I show even the slightest emotion that isn't ARROGANCE and HOSTILITY...but I really have a big soft core deep inside that I can't ever let anyone see because then they'll know I'm WEAK and won't take me seriously!" This character stereotype hinges around the fact that the character's a woman and so must be a horrendous person in order to prove she's not just some "silly girl". And frankly? I find that stereotype just as sexist and insulting as the Bella Swan type.

Fuck off. :I

[identity profile] sullen-strange.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
At first, I read that as "I'm likely sexiest" and was very confused.
I get where you're coming from. I especially despise the "shrew" archetype still seen in media. The woman is clingy, bitchy, and/or uptight. On the other end of the spectrum, you get writers who feel like they need to compensate for misogyny in the media by making female characters constantly-raging, beating-everyone-up, probably-on-steroids badasses. I'm not really a fan of that either. Surely there has to be some middle ground.

[identity profile] checkerblob.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think the secret meant insecure as in whiny and bitchy- I'll agree that those are bad traits. I think it meant insecure like shy, nerdy, awkward, the type of character that would be called an underdog or an everyman if she was a dude. I like badass female characters, but being a girl who is very nerdy, very shy, very socially awkward and the polar opposite of "cool" in every way, I have to find myself agreeing with the OP just a little.
But, hey, it's not like I think there should just be one personality type amongst fictional women. I just think girls in the media should be as diverse and interesting as boys in their personalities.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-24 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Dear secret submitter,
Your views won't get you lynched by feminists; more likely, you'll get their support. In order to avoid the the "weak and docile" stereotype, writers often seem to overcompensate and end up at the opposite side of the spectrum. The result is a super-strong/smart/powerful woman, but not much of an interesting character (and not very relatable either). I'd like to direct you to this article, in which someone more eloquent than I explains the concept in more depth (with flowcharts!):

Enjoy!
