Taking a "stance of neutrality" and carefully avoiding addressing any part of an actual conversation, when someone is saying misogynistic things and being very offensive is what they're referring to with the "impressing guys" thing. If you've never heard of women acting in a sexist way or aligning themselves with sexist men so they can impress them by showing how "different" they are from those "ugly feminists," well, you're a lucky woman. And staying silent on the issue and nitpicking people who fail to contribute to the conversation adequately enough for your taste, you're aligning yourself with the misogynist -- you certainly don't seem to be calling him out.

So, what you're saying is essentially that you have no defense for your attempt to downplay and disregard the obvious and gross sexism of the poster I was responding to. Maybe in that case you should reexamine why you think he wasn't being sexist despite the multiple misogynistic slurs ("bitch," "feminazi") he used.

Well, "bitch" at least is a term I've heard directed at both men and women, and even though it's used mainly with women there are insults that are used mainly with men like "bastard" and "prick" so I don't really see the issue there.

"Feminazi" is a term I know very little about, other than hearing it used to refer to very militant feminists, rather than (again) women as a whole. And by "militant" I don't mean pushing the feminist agenda, but just sort of being jerks to anyone and everyone who doesn't agree with them. Every single political and social movement has those jerks.

As for the third - I thought that was just an insult to an individual? Not that it makes it okay, but it doesn't make it anti-feminist. Just because you label yourself as a feminist doesn't mean you are suddenly immune to shit. If a person called themselves, say, a Democrat, and another person said "well you're just a stupid and ugly Democrat", it wouldn't be a cool thing to say, but it's also not an attack against Democrats.

It's possible that we might be able to work our way OUT of the uncanny valley, once the technology becomes good enough. It isn't 'more realistic is creepy' it's that once you skirt towards realistic, you have to get it closer and closer to humans to avoid creepy. At which point, you have to ask yourself, why not just cast human beings?

Tintin is still Uncanny Valley, IMO. Getting closer, but still no cigar.

As the anon below pointed out, "bitch," "feminazi," calling a feminist an "ugly fat man-hater" and so on? All inherently misogynist. The first two are pretty gross slurs. And when you use a misogynistic slur? Yeah, you're being misogynistic towards women, as a whole. When you refer to a feminist as a "feminazi," you're being misogynistic and offensive to all feminists (not to mention anyone with enough of a brain and sense of decency to realize that comparing a women's rights movement to Nazis is insensitive and wrong). And anyway, if you're okay with using misogynistic slurs against one or two women, that still makes you a misogynist. It doesn't matter if you're attacking one woman or all of them, if you think those kinds of words and phrases are okay, you're a misogynist, and being a misogynist is an attack against women.

bitch is an insult because a bitch is a female dog. it's also been used, and is still used, to put down any woman who disagrees with a man or is too ~confrontational~ toward him. which is exactly how it was used here.

feminazi is offensive because it implies feminism is just like a fascist dictatorship that committed horrible acts of genocide. it implies that men are somehow victimized by feminism and feminists.

the third one? fuck, this is what makes me wonder if you're just trolling, because seriously? how does anyone not see that as sexist? not only did he imply that a woman's only worth is her appearance, he also was suggesting that the only possible reason someone could disagree with his ignorant view of sexism just ~hates men~ which, he implies all over the thread, is totally just as bad as being a misogynist.

I guess I wasn't under the impression that the whole world spent an hour researching and thinking deeply before deciding to insult someone. People use the connotations their familiar with, regardless of origin, and it's really not that deep.

Anyway, I'm not stanning for anyone here and I NEVER said that insulting a man is as bad as being a misogynist. I only took issue with interpretation. If you can't get past that, I don't really want to have a conversation (and frankly I'm tired of this wank anyway).

"Bitch" is not remotely analogous to "bastard" or "prick," and has a far different history -- it's a false equivalency. "Bitch" is a gross slur and compares a woman to an animal -- specifically, to a female dog used for breeding. Think about that for a minute. Considering the treatment of women even now, and still more in the past, this is disgusting.

"Feminazi" is a disgusting and absurd term used to discredit feminists by comparing them to Nazis. Now think about this one for a minute. They are literally saying that by wanting women to have the same rights and privileges as men, feminists are just like Nazis. This is incredibly offensive, and not just because feminists aren't like Nazis. And if you think its use is limited to women who are "jerks" (and really, who decides whether they are or not? Oh yeah. Men), well, you're pretty damn naive. Any woman who dares speak out against a man about sexism and misogyny is pretty automatically termed a "feminazi."

There is a pretty long history of men calling women "ugly" and "fat" in order to discredit and shame them into shutting up and shutting down. Particularly, feminists have been stereotyped as being fat, ugly women who just hate men and want to, idk, put them down or something, rather than ordinary, everyday women who just want equal rights. It's a way to shame women into silence, and it is pretty much only used against women and especially feminists. Calling a feminist a "fat, ugly man-hater" is an attempt to shame her and discredit and disregard her feelings and opinions as just "hating men" and a natural result of her being fat and ugly (because obviously your appearance has so much to do with your intellectual ability, amirite?!). There is a long, long, long history of insults to women's appearances being used to shame and discredit them and shut them up. And again, comparing it to someone insulting a Democrat like that -- which nobody does, by the way, nobody ever looks at someone and goes "you're a Democrat, so you must be fat and ugly!" but they suuure as fuck do with feminists -- is a false equivalency.
