I don't understand why it's such a big deal to people either. I mean, if it upsets someone I'm friends with, it's just courtesy not to talk to them about it. But I'm not sure why Nazi chic is so much worse than other things. I mean, if I say I love anime drawings of pirate wenches, no one gets all up in about the horrible things pirates have done. But with Nazi uniforms (which may or may not closely resemble actual Nazi uniforms anyway), it's "No, no, don't be intrigued by this kink! Clearly you have no idea they did horrible things!"

....To which I can say little more coherent than "Wait, *what?*"

[identity profile] kasumi-sora.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Generally speaking, it is only a nazi uniform if it has a Swastika on it.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Well, obviously, though I'd think some other logos (like the totenkopf on a hat, or something) would be the same. I just meant that some of the fetishwear playing to this kink is... not always about looking accurate.

[identity profile] kasumi-sora.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Point taken.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
whoops, meant to post anon, sorry. :\

seriously, so why don't they just take off the obvs nazi imagery and then wear the rest of the costume? why do they NEED the swastika if it really just IS the general uniform they care about?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
DA

If we go by that standard, I have pretty much never thought a Nazi uniform looked cool, because I can't dissociate the on-its-point swastika (not the Buddhist one, which rests flat on its side) from the horror of genocide. However, I do like the aesthetic of long black coats and the hats and the boots.

OT, but I learned something new today. I didn't know there was a difference in the way they were displayed. Thanks, anon!

probably because the impact of WWII was global, devastating and recent, it irrevocably changed the makeup of the Western world, and the consequences of the Nazi government are still affecting people's lives.

whereas pirates.

[identity profile] ncc-gqmf.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
...probably because no one alive today has actually been affected by the kind of pirates you're talking about, as opposed to the millions still alive who were directly and personally harmed by the Nazis and their immediate descendants?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
and their immediate descendants?

I hope you're talking about offshoots of the Nazi Party and not the people of Germany, because they have paid for what was done many times over.

I'm talking about the descendants of the people who were harmed, German defender anon.

The current pirate portrayal in media is far more informed by Captain Hook as a fantasy/archetype than actual pirates. I would say that most peoples liking of pirates is akin to liking steampunk. It's cool, but pretty disconnected from reality-as-it-had-been.

The pirates (usually Carribbean-style pirates) are something that happened several hundred years ago. There is nobody living today who was victimised by a pirate of the Carribbean, unlike Nazis. There are still victims of their atrocities alive, and there are still people who lost their entire families to them. And it was what, 70 years ago? That's nothing.

If they don't resemble a Nazi uniform anyway, then why tack on a swastika just to make it ~~~~Nazi~~~? Why not just draw a random sexy uniform? It smacks of edginess. With a sledgehammer.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
People are going to jump on you for drawing any black uniform with jackboots and flared pants and call you a Nazi fan for it even if the swastika is missing, as far as I've seen. Every time, somebody makes the Nazi reference even if there is no sign of Nazi-specific gear.

I would never purposely add a swastika or death's head to a uniform, but people tend to associate any uniform that looks vaguely like that with Nazi fetishism

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
+1

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I was specifically referring to what previous anon said, about cases where they're really not that similar to Nazi uniforms, it's just the swastika.
I know that if it actually looks like a Nazi uniform only without the swastika you're not fooling anybody.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Thing is, I feel the same way about Nazi kink as I've usually seen it. Most of it that I've seen isn't about being realistic, and the little of it that is grosses me out, too.

I'm sure this is gonna get me crucified, but honestly I don't really see why "edginess" is bad. A lot of people kink on things they find scary or weird or wrong. I'm not sure I understand why that's considered laughable, or why it's assumed that having a kink for something because it's wrong is about... secretly thinking it's not wrong.

Uh, no, then people like that would kink on something else!

Speaking of pirates, I'd just like to point out that it's still a problem nowadays, e.g. in Somalia. So there are people living today who were victimised by piracy.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Are you seriously that stupid.

Serial killers and all other terrible people wear the same clothes you do. No one's yelling "How dare you wear jeans! Do you know what horrible things people who wear jeans have DONE??". Pirates didn't have a fucking dress code, okay. The Nazis DID. And the Holocaust is pretty much inseparable from the Nazis & their uniform, especially the swastika they perverted. If you can't understand why people have a knee-jerk reaction to Nazi uniforms, you're an imbecile.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
this, seriously

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I understand why people have a squick. I just don't understand why they think their squick is a matter of huge importance. People can't always control the kinks they have, and I'm not sure they should have to either, really.

Being bothered by other people's fapping patterns isn't social justice, it's just being grossed out. We all have involable rights to our gross-outs, and some of them make a lot of sense (like being grossed out by Nazi chic.) But don't make of that more than it is.

Maybe it's because pirates never committed genocide, murdering millions of people or tried to steamroll their way across the face of an entire continent with a hurricane of destruction?

Seriously, apple meet orange. You can't compare a pirate to a Nazi. That's like comparing a meter maid against a veteran Navy SEAL.

[identity profile] hopeandmemory.livejournal.com 2011-10-26 03:18 am (UTC)(link)

really?

Pirates pillaged, raped and murdered people for centuries.

For the most part, pirates were never the ones in establishment power. They were outlaws to just about every nation (often respectable people driven into piracy by poverty or "crimes" of stealing food or other necessities), and I honestly can't remember any massive war they staged to take over several countries and their resources.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-26 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
There's nothing wrong with havimg fetishes but telling victims of a bloody and painful genocide to shut up about it? Dude not cool.
Also one thing is to like the uniforms and how they look but when I read stuff like "I roleplayed rape fantasies with my bf he was a nazi and i was a jew" it makes me want to barf. Maybe I'm a sj or something but there should be some boundaries fandom shouldn't cross.
