Pretty much how I feel too. >: I've made up for it since then, but...

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
when I grew up I wasn't allowed to watch TV. it's taken me years to catch up with all the Simpsons/Seinfeld/pop culture references. I feel you, dude.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-07 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
None of my friends are into a lot of the things I'm into. That's life, n'est-ce pas?

I didn't have any game systems either but I made up for it by playing some video games at friend's houses / after-school program in elementary school. This means I've never played a lot of single-player games like Mario and Zelda. But whatever, this whole idea of the PLATONIC CHILDHOOD where unless you had these specific experiences you missed out is fucking weird. I had a good time as a kid. Did you enjoy your childhood, OP? Then you didn't miss out on shit.

[identity profile] making-excuses.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I still can't afford it, I own a ps2 (also psp and ds light, but both bought used), and even if I could afford to buy anything completely new, I could never justify all that money on new games instead of food and new clothes and such.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-07 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
You are not alone OP, I only ever had a nintendo and we probably had like, 4 games for it. Video games are a more recent thing for me and I am going back and playing games that my other friends have childhood nostalgia for.

Once I play the games I can talk to them about it, but I am also not the best gamer since I did not grow up with it like my friends did so I really have trouble playing games with other people.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps it's an obvious sign you need to jump fandoms if you're honestly expecting a video game one to be your HP or RL Stine mainstay.

Also, emulators.

Also, also, not everyone in game communities grew up, much less even played in the 90's glory days. There's so many people whose first console was a PS2 when they were in their late teens for instance, or became interested in the medium after FF7 basically popularized JRPGs. Not to mention anyone who jumps in now thanks to things like the Humble Indie Bundles, or the iPhone/Android offerings.

Yeah, we had a NES and about five games. *shrug*

Let's talk about Goosebumps, OP. Which was your favorite book? Were you good at guessing the "plot twists" at the end?

[identity profile] ologist.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Same here, sort of. I saved up all my birthday and christmas money from my grandparents for a few years before I finally got a cameboy colour and pokemon yellow. Then a few months later they brought out Ruby and Sapphire. and I became incredibly jealous of some friends of mine who got it on the first day and proceeded to rave about how I should get it. I never did, though (I got gold version instead, but no way could I afford the console upgrade)

(Anonymous) 2011-12-07 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
And that's why I'm glad that I didn't get into gaming, because it seems very expensive.

My cousins had an Atari and I had a Nintendo system (circa 1988 lol). I also got a Gameboy (the original that looks like a fricking brick) when I was about 14 I think? And that was as far as my gaming ever went.

I had the same problem when I went to art school. Not only was I older than everyone and most of the games they talked about had came out when I was in my 20's, I grew up in the Middle East so you can guess how many games were available to me. Of course no one would want to talk about Ice Climber when they could talk about Sonic, Zelda and the Final Fantasy series.

[identity profile] otakugal15.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I was ECSTATIC when my brother and I got our first Gameboy Pockets and an N64, but after those game purchases? We only had 5 games each on those systems (the gameboy games were shared) and we didn't get a new game system until I was in the 11th grade. The N64 and such was when I was in the middle of elementary school.

So...I'm in the same boat as you. Though Pokemon, Mario, and Legend of Zelda I know a bit about, since we had those games. >> Sorry OP.

But Final Fantasy I never played until I got PS2 and even then, it's only been FFX and Tactics. And KH I was always late to the party for so....

....pretty much a cool story bro moment here.

But, over all, I do know what it feels like OP.

[identity profile] seapiida.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
/sigh I know that feel.

I had a Gameboy Color growing up so I had Pokemon at least. But I never got to play a console until the Game Cube. Now I at least have a PS3 but I can't afford games for it so it's mostly decoration.

But I'm catching up slowly with the help of emulators.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Well, at least that's a legitimate, understandable reason why you didn't own a game system. I didn't have a SNES when I was kid because we could only choose between the SNES and the Genesis, and I though the Genesis was "edgier" and "cooler". So I asked for a Genesis at Christmas. Sure, there were still plenty of good games on the Genesis and I got to play a few of them, but I missed out on all of the SNES RPGs that other people my age played, so I can't reminisce about Chrono Trigger or Earthbound or FFVII or even Super Mario World. All because I thought Nintendo was for babies or some shit (due to stupid things like the fact that the Genesis version of Mortal Kombat had more blood and gore)

(Anonymous) 2011-12-07 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
You're not the only one, op. :(

(Anonymous) 2011-12-07 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
I can relate to this, albeit for different reasons. I had a GBA for years but I only got into Pokemon with the newest games. It seems like I completely avoided the big series when I was little.

[identity profile] followthemoth.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Same here, not for money reasons though, my parents were just weird. No video games or any junk food in our house. I'd go over to my friends and play all their games and pig out on chips and candy though.

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
I had to go next door to my friend's because she had Atari and I didn't. I played the games in arcades, but never at home. Maybe that's why I don't care about them now that I'm an adult (except I really want to play Skyrim).

[identity profile] friendofwomen.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Two things:

First of all, while I sympathize with you not having the money to play video games, I don't think it's fair of you to resent(?) your friends that did get to play them as a kid. Everyone probably "missed out" on something as a kid, and i doubt they're purposefully excluding you.

Secondly, your friends might not have had that much money growing up, either. A large chunk of the gaming stuff I had as a kid was stuff I saved up for on my own or with my brother, with our $5-a-week allowance. that's just what we chose to spend our money on.

But...they're your gamer fandom friends. I mean fuck them if they intentionally exclude you or try to make you feel bad about what you couldn't afford in your childhood, but beyond that I don't see much to complain about. For a long time I didn't have any video games growing up and they weren't a big part of my childhood, but they were a big part of some people's childhoods. I never had any Pokemon cards either, but I'm hard-pressed to find a friend of mine who could say the same. At this point I've become well-acquainted with the favorites of other childhoods through the internet.

Also: FUCK YEAH GOOSEBUMPS! I loved those books.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-07 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
With you on this, OP. It's so much fun, let me tell you, getting razzed about skill level by gamer friends who were practically born with a controller in hand.

[identity profile] kyuusei.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
You probably want to find a more appropriate fandom(s) then.

As a kid I didn't have much. I had an NES and belatedly an SNES and very few games on each until I discovered SNES RPGs.. oh boy. But I played Atari, the various Sega systems at relatives' houses a lot. I have a lot of systems now, but only because most were gifts (as have been a lot of the games I own, I could never have afforded my ridiculous backlog on my own). I actually finally got a 360 today... lol. But gaming has been a dedicated hobby of mine ever since getting my own PSone. I used to rent a lot, but I more often swap games with friends these days.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-07 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
I never played pokemon or really got into it. I didn't hate it. I just wasn't interested in it. I'd watched maybe 3-4 episodes on tv and the only pokemon I knew of was pikachu because he was everywhere. People I talk to now like to reminisce about it and I have no idea what/who they're talking about. I'll ask and they just laugh because they think it's funny that someone exists that never played/watched pokemon. I just nod and go with it and try to change the topic when I see an opportunity to.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-07 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure your gamer friends do not want you to feel bad on purpose. But for stroll down fandom memory lane, you would maybe like to find other people to talk to.

My gamer peers think I'm weird too because Mario, Sonic or Spyro do not hold any nostalgic value to me. My first gaming system was my mom's ex-boyfriend's old Playstation and I wouldn't change anything if I could go back time. Still today I pick my games to enjoy them, not to show off my shallow knowledge about classics or newest hits.

[identity profile] kryptoncat.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as you enjoyed most of your childhood, you didn't miss out on the experience.
