Some TransSiberian Orchestra, Fahoo Forays (or however that's spelled) and You're a Mean One from the Grinch (original cartoon), and some random silly songs. Those are the only Christmas songs I really like.

I sympathize with this a lot.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-25 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you have issues with Christmas itself? (Not asking to be rude/confrontational, more just curious as there is a wide variety of Christmas songs in style/form/voicework/era/etc. So trying to figure out the 'why'.)

And even as someone who loves Christmas, after two weeks I hate it myself and some of my less favorite ones make me rage. I was able to avoid the burnout this year, and just cranked the music for a couple hours on Christmas Eve to get me in the spirit. Of course, I also don't listen to any of the 'Jingle Bell Rock'/'Walking in a Winter Wonderland' vaguely kitschy stuff. Most my holiday music is Celtic Women, Loreena Mckennit, and Enya. Some Josh Groban because his voice is wow. Oh, and the Dadvid Bowie/Bing Crosby Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth mix they did.

...It helps when there is actual talent redoing the songs rather than the mass pop regurgitated crap they sling around in stores. That makes me want to punch something too OP.

You are not alone! I think a lot of people feel the same way. I am so sick of contemporary/pop Christmas music. I hear Mariah Carey or Wham! crooning about what they want/plan for Christmas, I'm going to stab something. Ugh.

I only ever want to hear really old Christmas Choir music or the TransSiberian Orchestra. >.

[identity profile] hopeandmemory.livejournal.com 2011-12-25 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
i loved christmas music before i worked an entire holiday retail season (i.e. halloween - boxing day). now it just sucks out my soul through my ears.

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2011-12-25 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
If I could I would erase Jingle Bell Rock off the face of the planet. And this year, I'm also adding that "Last Christmas" song to that erasing list as well. I lost count of how many times they played that piece of crap on the radio where I work.

lol I guess I'm going to be the odd man out in this thread and say that I fucking love Christmas music. I've been listening to it all day, I put on the 24/7 Christmas music station in the car while everyone else begs me to change it, I secretly play it in my room in July, I revel in hearing the carols being played on the speakers in Wal Mart, and you bet that I sing along to it. I am that person.

Man, I'm not even much into Christmas itself. Just the music. My family has always despised it though.

Why? I mean, granted there are some songs that are SO F'N IRRITATING that even I, a dyed-in-the-wool Christmas music lover, am filled with irrational rage and hatred upon hearing them, but I don't get why you'd hate ALL of it.

[identity profile] khandreia.livejournal.com 2011-12-25 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
There's only a small amount of Christmas music I can stand anymore (mostly Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Mannheim Steamroller, and some of the lesser-known artists I enjoy who've put out non-schmaltzy holiday albums, among scattered other things). Everything else can just go to hell for all I care. Working several years of retail and having it shoved down my throat from November 1st all the way to Christmas really soured me on it.

But more than anything, Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" song needs to die an especially fiery death. That one always sends me flying into a frothing rage.

oh, I know. =/ (though all the songs from the Muppet Christmas Carol get a pass imo)

I am wish you, subby. In the entire library of Christmas music, I can only stomach one, just one Christmas song.

The rest of it makes me want to stick very sharp pencils in my eardrums.

[identity profile] comradenemesis.livejournal.com 2011-12-25 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)

Because i agree with you, this is for you, OP.

[identity profile] quorothorn.livejournal.com 2011-12-25 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Most Christmas music I'm basically okay with, though they can still get nigh-grating when played over and over (and this is from someone who WILL listen to the same song fifty times in a row if it's one I like enough). The only one that's regularly played that I out-and-out hate, however, is "Baby, It's Cold Outside". I want that song to die in a fire. The lyrics are creepy as all get out: and it's not even that good a song IMO.

Anyway, I'm sorry to hear this is the case for you, since it becomes so very prevalent for over a month out of the year, every year.

Any chance that "Christmas songs" with a parodic edge to them are better for you? Because I might suggest checking out some of the South Park Christmas songs, if so. I love those.

(Also, +1 for choice of image for this one.)

I hate most any and every Christmas song that you can hear on the radio with a burning, burning passion, but...is this really fandom? Is there really a fandom for Christmas music? IF there weren't so few secrets today, I'm pretty sure other people would be saying the same thing. :/

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2011-12-26 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I collect Christmas music, but I don't listen to it in December. Yes, strange. And my favorite stuff is all medieval or odd. Things like "Gaudete". Things with harmony. Or stuff that has been done in a jazz or lounge style or is all instrumental.

But I can understand OP's attitude. If it were up to me, I'd ban Christmas music from the stores and the radio until Advent.

I like a lot of classic Christmas songs, but there's just so much crap mixed in. At least it's nearly over, OP.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-26 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I like how OP goes "I hate Christmas music!" and everyone takes that as a cue to rec Christmas music.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-26 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
OMG yes, I am so with you OP. Good to know i'm not the only one.

[identity profile] rattyrayvn.livejournal.com 2011-12-26 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I love actual Christmas carols (the religious ones) even though I'm not a Christian. Songs about Santa Claus and winter holidays are okay...

But I will NOT stand for 'Jingle Bell Rock' or 'All I Want For Christmas Is You'. No matter who sings them, kitten punching mode will be enabled.

[identity profile] moustachey.livejournal.com 2011-12-26 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
since when is christmas music a fandom?

(Anonymous) 2011-12-26 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
How is this a secret? When did Christmas/Holidays become fandoms or is there holiday ships? Kwanzaa/Channakah anyone?

[identity profile] kryptoncat.livejournal.com 2011-12-26 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
I love Christmas music, have some on my ipod, but only the non-infuriating songs. If Christmas Shoes comes on the radio one more time...
