He very much could. I thought the charm of the relationship was that he loved her regardless. She's bossy, conceited, and completely unapologetic in her pursuit. She's brash and self-deluded. And he falls for her anyway. It works somehow.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah MTE. He COULD do better, but he loves her despite her flaws and doesn't want a total personality 180.

Plus maybe he's got an abuse kink. ;x

You took the words right out of my mouth :) I really, REALLY don't like it when relationships are measured by "well, she/he is the best you can do". Love doesn't work that way all the time. Sometimes, you love a person to death despite the fact that you have an opportunity to "do better" and be with someone else who seems more "deserving" of your love. (Also, I hate the "deserving of your love" trope. Love doesn't work that way.) It's not about who's a better person or whether or not you can have a better relationship, it's about who you're in love with and who you're not. The fact that Kermit loves Miss Piggy just because is just incredibly charming.

Cause he really could. :|

Honestly, I feel like their relationship borders on abusive. I know I'll likely get my ass nailed to the wall for that, but I really do.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I like to think that abuse is perfectly acceptable in the Muppet world, since they all routinely get beaten up, blown up, thrown against walls, fall from high places, etc. for comedy.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
It probably is, but so is Punch and Judy, and a lot of anime male/female relationships, and they're played for humor. Not saying abuse is humorous, it isn't, but the trope is there, and probably isn't gonna change.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, she's just awful and domineering, constantly.

If the genders were reversed, I don't think anyone would question the abusiveness of that relationship.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
If Kermit ever does actually settle down with/marry/acknowledge Piggy as his girlfriend/etc., I am done with the Muppet canon forever. She's toxic. I mean, I love her, but she's the worst girlfriend material, and I'm so glad that Kermit knows this and keeps her at arms length always.

[identity profile] vivalana.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
They've been married, like, twice.

Well, it's not like there's much other choice, is there? Camilla's taken, Janet might as well be, and there just aren't that many other female Muppets that aren't one-shot characters.

I can't really see Piggy being happy in a long-term relationship, though. She seems like she likes the thrill of the chase more than the actual work of building a partnership and a life together.

[identity profile] masterfedora.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Forgive the pickiness but it's Janice and I think she's with Floyd.

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Are you kidding? He's a weenie. Kermit is the kind of guy who will get friend-zoned by every girl except an overbearing crazypot like Piggy.

Also you're taking the Muppets way too seriously.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I sort of agree? Like, there are definitely movies/specials where I think that, but than there are movies like the Christmas Carol, Treasure Island, and (IMO) the new one where I think they work. :)

Wait, are they like, TOGETHER together? I thought that was the joke, that she was megacrushing (both literally and figuratively) and it wasn't returned.

Huh. Learn something new every day!

Maybe this is just because most of my Muppet exposure is from the Muppet Show, but Kermit's kind of an ass to Miss Piggy. I think that she could do better than him.

Depends on what you mean by "better." He loves her, how much better is there?

[identity profile] tigerdreams.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Really? Because while they're adorable in the movies, I've been doing a re-watch of The Muppet Show recently, and Kermit's kind of a huge asshole, and Piggy is the one I think could do a lot better. I think it's only her insecurity and need for approval that keeps her coming back to him after all the shit he pulls. Their relationship is a lot better in the movies, though.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-30 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
I know this is f!s and we talk about things like cartoon characters seriously but come on, they're MUPPETS.

But if I'm going to take this seriously then Piggy is a flawless queen, and Kermit loves her.

What's funny is if you read interviews with them, they will say that the things that happen in movies or on the muppet show aren't real, that their relationship is actually really strong and they've never broken up (just read an interview like that yesterday that was Miss Piggy and Kermit talking about the most recent movie.

Are you kidding? There's no way in hell Kermit would ever find anyone who would give him the attention he wants and needs like Miss Piggy. He's the entertainer/host with all the stereotypes that entails. He wants a stalker so bad. At least she doesn't make fun of his appearance. If my boyfriend kept alluding to to my weight...

But yes, they are more adorable in movies.

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Through the years I think he's put her through just as much unintentional emotional abuse and neglect to kind of balance out their relationship. In the end, they love eachother despite their flaws. They admit mistakes and learn from them.

Muppets was a really good example of this. I also love how Piggy also seems to always come to Kermit's rescue.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
The dynamics of their relationship always confused me as a kid, hahaha. After seeing "The Muppets", though, I think I finally get it. They don't have a perfect relationship by any means, but at the end of the day they truly care for each other. And they're really cute together. ;m;

That said, I also kind of ship Kermit with Fozzie. Please tell me I'm not the only one...

When you love someone you don't care. I always wondered for years why a handsome guy like my Stepdad feel for my Mom and loved her so much. But he does and they are so happy. And he's not so handsome any more, sorta looks like weathered tree now. And she lost weight, and they are so happy.

When you are in love and all the gears click into place everything works.
