[Sherlock Series 1]

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
In Sarah's defense, wasn't she just being roused from a knock to the head? Because I know that, when I hit my head hard, I'm not the most coherent, and she was hit hard enough to be knocked unconscious, wasn't she?

(Unless, of course, she wasn't knocked 'round the head, but drugged, in which case my point still stands- it's hard to be coherent after being drugged into unconsciousness!)

You were not the only one thinking that re: the chair.

[identity profile] lolofielding.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair to Sarah, she did manage to notice that thing with the numbers in the Banker episode that Sherlock couldn't see.

And at least they all know that the Earth revolves around the sun. :P

[identity profile] greenhoodloxley.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I love that moment, when he's like, 'WHAT?' and she's 'THE WORDS.' Heehee.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Neither Sherlock nor John thought to move the chair either, and Sherlock didn't have the excuse of being knocked-out or drugged.

[identity profile] straydog733.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Definitly agree about the chair thing, any one of them should have just pushed it over (not to mention that the cross bow thing was just stupid to begin with).

But I'm curious why you put Molly on this list? True, she's caught up in her crush on Sherlock, but I never got the feeling that she was anything but good at her job.

samesies. i wonder if the op added her because of that moriarty playing to gay stereotypes thing.

I don't think they're necessarily portrayed as dumb (though spot on for Sarah, seriously gurl), though I am irritated by how Sherlock seems to enjoy using his powers of deduction to be an asshole to his allies.

[identity profile] to-question.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps I'm remembering wrong, but Lestrade didn't come off as being nearly as hopeless as everyone else, but that might just be because I find Rupert Graves very distracting.

In regard to the chair, she was probably a bit incoherent, as was said before, due to being roused from unconsciousness. I can barely form a thought beyond, "Hnnnnn. Need Coffee," when I wake up from sleep, much less a knock on the head/drugging. Also, she was probably neck deep in panic mode. Rational thoughts don't really have much of a home in panic mode.

The others I can agree with. We get it. Sherlock is brilliant.

[identity profile] adlanth.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Sherlock thought the pink woman clever (in a very convoluted way)? Maybe not.
But otherwise, yeah. Even John isn't always very bright (but I suppose that's the usual sidekick-provides-a-pretext-for-explaining-it-all-outloud thing).

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
My problem with the pink woman was that she used her phone as a signal to who murdered her after she would have died, rather than try to use it as a way to save herself. Who thinks like that? For fucks sake why not silently dial 911 in the cab after the crazy driver is going off about how he's going to kill you?

John has a LOT of not very bright moments but he tend to compensate with pure BAMFness. People seem to forget these moments, though.

lmfao what? how is lestrade dumbed down? moffat said on one of the commentaries “you thought he [Rupert] could have his own series being Lestrade. It’s like, if Sherlock Holmes doesn’t turn up, there is another television series where Inspector Lestrade solves the crime!”
and re: the pink lady... have you even seen a study in pink?

Aw, I protest! Lestrade is WAY more competent in this version than any other I've seen (which is why I think Donovan and Anderson are there, though neither seems that bad at being cops, just very unfond of Sherlock for what I feel are obvious reasons.) Molly seems oblivious to the fact that he's seriously never going to think of her that way, but never really came across as a genuinely stupid person, just blinded in this subject by her feelings. The pink lady was pretty smart, especially for someone dying slowly from her systems going fucked. Though yeah, I also am always like "COME ON, SARAH!" at that point. Though I suppose in her defense, when Sherlock ran up to her he immediately started untying her and didn't seem to think of just knocking the chair over either.

Sherlock Holmes is ALWAYS gonna be the smartest guy in any room, only Moriarty and Mycroft tend to be written on the same level and even then he always has to be the one who's right in the end because he's Sherlock. Every adaptation will write it like this. The beeb is rare enough for showing John keeping up and sometimes getting shit first. (AND IRENE! <33333333)

And apparently we can add Irene Adler to this list too now.

We get, he's the hero. But he isn't only always right, he's also extremely obnoxious about it. You're not really doing a good job if you want me to root for him, dear writers.

I know Sarah was knocked on the head and everything, but it didn't make the scene any less frustrating. I was gritting my teeth and grumbling "she could just knock the chair over that crossbow thing is as stupid as fuck"

[identity profile] miss-makiba.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I don't know about this. The first season had definite dumbed-down undertones, but most characters had at least one moment of brilliance. Besides that, the way the new season is going, Sherlock, Mycroft, and Moriarty are also all kind of emotionally non-functional, and this gets touched on. All the characters suit their roles very well, I think. :)

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, one of my reasons for loving this show is that they don't do that. Sherlock genuinely has a superpower which he demonstrates. Everyone else is competent at their jobs and only misses shit because no one without the superpower would catch it.

Seriously, can you look at a man's pant leg and see that he has three small dogs based on the placement of a couple of hard to see hair fibers -- without a microscope? No. Neither can Molly. It doesn't make Molly stupid.

As for Sarah -- she caught a clue that Sherlock didn't! Her only weakness was freezing when a goddamn spear was leveled at her chest. That's not stupidity, that's having a normal human reaction to a crazy as fuck situation. And frankly it's somewhat smart of Sally to suspect that Sherlock might one day go into making corpses, what with his gleefulness at looking at them. That's not stupidity, that's just just being suspicious.

Now there are shows that I do see everyone dumbed down to make one character look smart (I'm looking at you Batman -- the Joker is not brilliant, the world is just stupid), but this isn't the case.

[identity profile] nomorenoodles.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
Never really noticed the chair thing, but maybe Sarah thought she would get shot or killed in some other way if she tried to move? It's been a while since I saw that episode so I might be misremembering something, but that could be why she just sat there.

(Not annoyed, just wanted to use my only Sherlock icon.)

(Anonymous) 2012-01-07 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, I agree completely.

[identity profile] pendingprogress.livejournal.com 2012-01-07 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Argh, that whole 'Sarah could have knocked the chair over' - I didn't even think of that, until half the internet pointed it out, and I wasn't sitting there in mortal peril having recently been drugged/knocked out. Guess I'm even more of an idiot than her then. Except...neither Sherlock nor John told her to knock it over, or knocked it over themselves (not that John could but Sherlock, certainly) and I thought that was because if she had done, they could've easily just picked her back up and put her in the firing line again, and then held her there as she'd already 'shown her hand', as it were? Having done that trick a few times they probably had a good idea of how long it took till the arrow shot. Sarah, John and Sherlock wouldn't have had (well, maybe Sherlock, but still, he couldn't just go, "Oh by the way Sarah, in thirteen seconds, knock your chair over,") which is why I thought Sherlock went for untying her so she could, y'know, move.

But apparently that's just me?

Not to say you're wrong, but sometimes people are actually just stupid

There really are a shocking number of idiots that mysteriously continue to exist

. . . But seriously Sarah, come the fuck on
