It wasn't high art, but it was a ton of fun. Fun is good. One of my favorite films of 2011.

[identity profile] captain-emily.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
This is exactly how I felt about it.

[identity profile] violence4.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it was really bad. But it was also so entertaining. I saw it twice. It was awesome<3

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
It's so unapologetically bad it's actually charming. ♥

[identity profile] barnabys-bane.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I found it odd how much I didn't enjoy this movie. I usually like the cheesy superhero films with plentiful CGI, and I'm pretty stoked for The Avengers, but this one just didn't do it for me. Maybe it was because Natalie Portman's character irritated me so much, idk.

[identity profile] making-excuses.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who knows nothing about the Thor comic books but quite a bit about Norrøn mythology I was having so much fun in the movie theater, and personally even if it had a lot of fail it was one of the most entertaining movies I've seen in ages.

[identity profile] syrenssong.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Same here! I know NOTHING about the comics but I was having so much fun with all the mythology stuff.

[identity profile] visiblemarket.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't think it was that bad, but you know it's okay to like things that aren't pinnacles of artistic achievement, right? So don't be embarrassed; you're in good company, lots of people enjoyed it.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
If you enjoyed it, it couldn't have been that terrible.
Also, not every movie has to be Academy Award material to be an entertaining movie.

[identity profile] nakki.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I would have fallen in love with this movie just for the "hubble" line, everything else was just delicious, delicious gravy =D

It's probably one of my favorite superhero movies. I can't explain it. (but I guess I'm going to try)

Pretty visuals
I love anything about space and aliens
The twisted Norse mythology
Fun villain
It didn't take itself too seriously (a la TDK)
The Hero wasn't perfect
The Hero didn't spend the whole time angsting (but I guess Loki did enough of that)
I didn't hate the human characters like I was expecting to

[identity profile] hermione-vader.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
It's one of my favorite superhero movies, too. I agree with you on all of these points. I'd add:

The female characters were characters and not just eye candy.
It spent a lot more time developing Asgard than I expected.
The Love Interest did not have to compromise or give up her job (which is her whole life) to get the guy.

Most of my favourite movies are awful and I an unapologetic about it. Nothing wrong with being entertained for entertainment's sake. And yeah, I love this one, too.
fahrbotdrusilla: Irulan’s ridic costume ([mfv] Winking Thor)

[personal profile] fahrbotdrusilla 2012-01-17 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I came to terms with it not being the best movie ever, but loving it anyway, right before I preordered it less than a week after I watched it.

[identity profile] 21lights.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't think it was a bad movie. It was fun and entertaining in all the ways that (I think) it intended to be. It's not going to win any Oscars, but so what? I enjoyed it.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Terrible, really? :P I wouldn't say amazing--like, it didn't make my top ten list or anything--but I think it's solid. Upon multiple viewings I think you really notice a lot of really nice acting moments; Ken knows how to direct good performances after all. I'm completely in love with the scene where Loki visits Thor on Earth and tells him that Odin's dead; it's just really nice, genuine work from Tom & Chris. But that's me.

Obligatory icon is obligatory. :P

Like everyone else said, don't feel bad. I went into Thor expecting a stupid superhero movie, and I loved it. It went over the top in all the fun ways, and it pinged that visceral sense of Comic Book Awesome that made me want to stand up and cheer when our hero got his hammer back. You can appreciate craft in media while letting yourself smile at the cheesy joys of life.

[identity profile] dazzledfirestar.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, OP... I think you need to let up on your definition of what makes a "good" movie. Fun and entertainment do not horrible films make. And after watching it several times, I've noticed (as someone else in this thread pointed out) some really solid acting and some very touching moments.

Being ashamed of yourself for liking something that is supposed to be nothing if not entertaining seems pretty harsh.

[identity profile] ionizable.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
tbh i was surprised ppl didn't hate this as much as they hated green lantern. i enjoyed thor, but i also enjoyed green lantern, and thought they were both at about the same levels of cheesiness. obviously the quality of thor was marginally better than green lantern in terms of character development and stuff, but overall... they were both campy and bad but good

Something doesn't have to be THE AWESOMEST THING EVER to be enjoyable. Like what you like!

Oh god, I just saw that movie last week. It was bloody awful. I didn't expect much but after reading the reactions online I at least expected it to be entertaining. It was so bland! Blah. It wasn't even so bad it was good. Just, blah.

[identity profile] captain-emily.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked it and didn't think it was "terrible" at all. It's a superhero comic book movie. It's more than likely going to have cheesy or campy moments and be a bit over the top.

I love The Dark Knight, but I think that it's had a negative impact on the genre. Now everyone looks to superhero movies to be "the next Dark Knight", when they don't realize that TDK is the exception to the superhero movie rule. It was a great movie, but it takes itself a little too seriously for a movie about a guy fighting crime while dressed like a bat. Thor didn't do that, and I loved it all the more for it.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
AGREED. like I don't understand people who love it. I didn't hate it, I just couldn't connect with the characters at all. I was bored, nearly fell asleep watching it, nothing was interesting or cool, story was boring, Thor bothered me. I don't understand the fandom at all.

[identity profile] anelectricsnail.livejournal.com 2012-01-23 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
"Good" and "entertaining" can sometimes exist without each other. That said, I thought Thor was good BECAUSE it was entertaining.
