Bwahahaha this comment is so hilariously true. My sister was diagnosed as bipolar for years until the doctors changed their minds and decided she was schizophrenic. Idk what they're calling her now. My brother was diagnosed as borderline personality disorder, but tbh I just think he's a simply fucked up addict so why do we need labels? He's probably gonna get a new diagnoses in a few years. Whatever gets him his disability cheque, I guess.

Wow what year are you in? At my school the weeaboos got weeded out after first year. Upper level it's all srs bzns. Then again I'm taking this Japanese class right now and most of the students are actually Japanese and snuck in on some loophole (like they went to an international school) to get easy credit despite the fact that they lived in Japan for years and are fluent derp. There's like two white people in the class including me...

Also, how do these people even know who is self-diagnosed and who isn't? Are those who are complaining over thinking that someone is using their disorder as an flimsy excuse to cover up bad behavior or is it actually legit? They are probably people that get shoved into the "Oh they are just using X as an excuse" category, when it's affecting them.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-27 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I've actually forgot most of it now through disuse, I learnt about 15 years back. I was fluent, but it's like anything else, you don't keep using it you lose it. I keep meaning to go on some refresher courses, or take a trip to Czech Republic to get it back) Also, can't help with the resources in the US, I'm in N.W. Europe myself.

Yeah, but it's the kind of humor that changed for me.

If I were to explain the difference between edgy humor and humor I like, I'd say it's not as much about the subject matter, as it is about the mechanism. A good joke has in itself more to it than "lol fart feminazi gay fart". It can involve those things, but it doesn't consist of those things.

I'm trying to pinpoint a good example, except that I've stopped watching them just before the movie came out...I still watched the movie, however. I think that a good example is that scene with Homer and Marge having sex and all the Disney animals come in and look on horrified. There has always been sex in the Simpson (Marge and Homer are shown kissing naked a lot, probably more than most married couples) but it was never the joke. It was always, Marge and Homer try to have sex but the kids barge in. Or, Homer wants to have sex but Marge is worried, or Marge wants to have sex but Homer falls asleep...instead here the joke is, "they're having sex! the cute critters think it's ugly! get it? get it? sex looks ugly!" which was really pointless and it made me cringe a little.

I...dunno if I've explained myself well or even if that was the point OP was trying to make.

Sorry about Hollywood lying to you - acting is all about the wrinkles. It's really hard for a person Botox'd to perfect smoothness to act in any convincing way. They just sort of look stunned. That's why I had to stop watching most American shows - it was like a plague for a while.

And wrinkles start to appear after 25-years-old on most people (that's the age you should start to use an anti-age cream), even younger on a subset of population, so, uh.

Are fake Aspies/Aspies who avoid responsibility really that common that everyone has to tack that on when discussing mostly-decent people with real problems? Really?

Sadly, yes it is. I have yet to meet even one self-professed Aspie online who didn't resort to playing their diagnosis (real or not) to shuck responsibility when called out on their shit. It's a trendy disease right now, thanks to doctors over-diagnosing it to please parents who should never have bred in the first place.

This! <3

It is easy to spot the self diagnosed. If you say something bad about ass-pies then everyone that piles on saying how their life is oh-so hard and how we are all terrible for for insulting them; then those as the self diagnosed guys who are full of bullshit. Also anyone who gets all hysterical, then tags the end of their post with an "I've been profesionaly dianosed, FYI", those are the lying bastards who are also self-diagnosed, but at least have the courage to admit to themselves they are full of shit so lie about it.

The people that have genuine Autism; those are the ones who don't mention it at all, but just apologise for getting something wrong and move on.

Happy Ass-Burger spotting.

Why do you need a feminine version of a name to call people? Do you have a blond-haired version, too?

You don't know shit about the Fernandes protest. I used to think the same thing as you, but it has actually changed Gallaudet for better. If the students didn't speak up about Fernandes being the wrong choice. "Not deaf enough" is the media's take. The protesters focused on her terrible track record but that wasn't enough for the media to run with so they angled on one of their complaints about her (and there were many).

I'm sorry you had a horrible experience with your deafness. It is not the same for everybody. I hated being deaf at first too but now I'm learning to love it and it has been wonderful.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-27 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Not dethtoll, but anyway I don't think the media would have reacted this way if the whole DPN thing never happened in the late 1980s. And tbh, I was a senior in high school (a deaf school) when the Fernandes thing happened and every single teacher made fun of Fernandes' ability to sign. It DID matter that she wasn't deaf enough.

We weren't talking about homestuck. You injected homestuck. Clearly you are a fan of homestuck.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
because not liking homestuck or its creator is trolling NO MATTER WHAT

So ... your language is influenced by what you read?

Congratulations! You're the 99 percent!

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. It might give you WRINKLES, too.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah pretty much this exactly

(Anonymous) 2012-01-30 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU. Why is this such a huge issue?

[identity profile] abyssal-recluse.livejournal.com 2012-01-30 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
You mad

[identity profile] blackjackrocket.livejournal.com 2012-01-31 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Funny. I never mentioned AS at all during that entire wank, and whenever someone claims that I hide behind it, they're never able to cite examples. I don't hide behind anything. I've never used AS as an excuse for anything, and simply because I'm open about my diagnosis is not the same thing at all.

Either cite examples or shut up.

I'm in the exact same boat anon, and I know exactly where you're coming from. I'm afraid to introduce myself as an Asian Studies major because I can almost hear the judgement.
It really doesn't help peoples opinions when I sit in front of a kid that wears a Pikachu hoodie and carries a Kirara plush around ALL THE TIME, because since I'm an Asian Studies major who likes anime and Japanese and Korean tv I must be a weaboo like that kid. I really just want to graduate quickly so I can go teach English in China

Honestly, I'm sort of hoping his sexuality won't be described any more than it currently is ("I don't see why it has to be a thing") because I'm selfish and would like to see a human character whose views on gender and labels and such are the same as mine.
