But.... that's illegal. There's a reason most fanfic writers give a disclaimer- they are not legally allowed to make money off their fic.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-10 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
They'll find and replace all names, especially in AUs, and then publish it. Happens all the time.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-10 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
It's actually really not, especially with AUs, and I'm willing to bet there's a bit of search-and-replace and tweaks like that.

Doesn't mean that it's not completely morally reprehensible, but it's certainly not illegal.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-10 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
OP.

What anon above said. They just change the names and a few canon details to make it more "original", edit it a little, and then re-publish it as original fiction. Unfortunately it does happen a lot. But that's the only fandom I'm aware of that is so open and accepting of it. Most of the fans encourage it. More than half of the "good" fics in the fandom end up going in that direction.

That's not the only thing that's upsetting about the fandom, though. It's really big on charity auctions. Which, you know, is really nice and all... but too much of it makes it iffish. And they literally hold auctions all the time. A lot of the authors won't publicize their fan fiction at all if it's written for an auction, either. You'll have to 'donate' in order to read the story. Like I said, iffy.

[identity profile] tane-the-insane.livejournal.com 2012-03-10 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
That's not stopping some of them. It's ridiculous. It's like they just cannot wrap their heads around the fact that these are not their characters and they cannot treat them like they are. I don't know if it's entitlement on steroids, or just plain stupidity, but either way, it's a little eyebrow-raising.

It is so NOT illegal that David Gerrold and Pat Murphy, among others, have done it and been professionally published. There are a lot of books that were written this way, and fandom only gets its skirt in a wad about this when people admit that they're doing it.

[identity profile] vickyblueeyez.livejournal.com 2012-03-10 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still looking for Frenemines. It was a horrible twilight fic where the author said Edward's jiz taste like "skittle juice." It was up there with My Immortal. The author took it down claiming they were going to make an original fic out of it.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-10 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
You want it? I think I have it saved somewhere (I save EVERYTHING). I'll PM you if you if I find it. Let me know.

Orgasms = unicorns and jizz that taste like skittle juice. lol this fandom.

[identity profile] slyprentice.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
That's...amazingly disturbing. But now I totally want to read it. Does anyone have it?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-10 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I see it as deliberately drawing attention to fanfiction and risking getting all of it shut down. This is exploiting someone else's existing fandom to discover what will sell, and then selling back that same fandom that was created because of someone else's work. Stephenie Meyer (fuck her, her work is terrible, but that's not the point) earned that fandom and she can very well say, "hey, if someone is using my fandom for their own monetary gain, why don't I just get all the fanfic pulled from online? It's not exactly legal anyway."

And can I use this place to rant about the fact that Master of the Universe warmed over just hit the NY times bestseller list? Because WHAT THE FUCK?

(I know that's not omnific specifically, but it's basically the same thing.)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-10 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
That's that "50 Shades" or something fic, right? I recently saw a newscast where some dude was saying it promotes violence against women or something. I don't know, never read it. BUT, the fact that it called such attention to fandom/fanfiction in general enraged me. Can't we just keep this shit as quiet as possible? Most fandoms are walking a thin line as fucking is. Jeez.

Blegh. I understand you OP, that just rubs me the wrong way. On top of that I just don't get it, I write very AU fics all the time because I really like putting the characters I love in different situations than the canon did. If you want to write an original story to publish, just write an original story. I really can't see how piggy-backing off someone else's work by editing your fan fic to make it "original" is not going to make the quality take a nose dive.

There's already a steady stream of crappy fantasy novels capitalizing on the success of Twilight anyway. Though that might be irrelevant since these could all be coffee shop human AUs and shit.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-10 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Oh christ. This bullshit again. "Worst idea ever"? Honestly?

Shitty fiction stemming from shitty fiction. Great, what a pile!

[identity profile] kikkyo.livejournal.com 2012-03-10 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I love their logo. Aside from that though, doesn't this make it just a little bit obvious that they're taking their idea straight from Twilight? Not that it's illegal in itself, but you'd think they'd cover their tracks a little more in case something got through that could be sued for plagiarism.

That said, I can't stand this thing of taking fanfic and editing the references out of them for sale. It's cheap, lazy and unprofessional but at least I get a good sense of what kind of people the authors are morally and how their writing is before I make the mistake of picking it up. Not to sound uppety or anything but f I'm buying a book, I want something that the author has put effort into, that the editor has worked their butt off to make sure it's good quality so that there's at least a chance I'll enjoy it. This fic-publishing trend reminds me of a kid recycling an old essay from a previous class because they over-procrastinated on the current assignment. Just because it got an A on ff.net doesn't mean it's something I want to pay to read. lol sorry.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-10 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
that sounds really dodgy in too many ways D:

are all fanfic atuhors in on this?

I knew someone who took down their novel-length fanfic to turn it into an actual novel. Once they did so, they discovered something—without the fandom bits, no one wanted to read it.

Last I heard, they were turning it back into a fanfic again. Le sigh.

Oh, thank god. I was just thinking that the world needs more crappy fiction.

[identity profile] octoberland.livejournal.com 2012-03-10 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Late to this so I'm sure it's already been said but:

Omnific isn't the only one that does this. The Writer's Coffee Shop does as well. And unfortunately they published 50 Shades of Grey (aka the Twilight fanfic Master of the Universe) and now, if what I've heard is right, that 'author' just got a seven figure print book deal for said Twilight fan fiction from Random House.

I think I have finally lost all faith in the world and humanity.
