According to dictionary.com (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/premier) it also means
first in rank; chief; leading.
first in time; earliest; oldest.

So I think it works well enough.

[identity profile] vethica.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not the specific word for it, though. http://public.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/premier.html (http://public.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/premier.html)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying it's the right word but I don't think it's wrong.

It's grammatically incorrect. Wrong part of speech.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
No, premiere as in a season premiere is a word that is spelled with an "e". There's no alternate interpretation or gray area or line of reasoning involved. It's simply the wrong word.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
lol, you would make a linguistics major cringe.

...nope. Don't care.

/going to use premier anyway

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm honestly puzzled. You're going to keep using the incorrect word because... you're allergic to learning? What?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Because I never write it down, and no one will know the difference. Also, because picking nits is not my idea of a good time, and as soon as I use it, I have to start explaining it to other people who don't know the difference. I'm just not going to bother.

Nazi should be capitalised.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I was going to say that.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
+1

Also, along the same vein, while I realize that it may be more of a U.S. rule than a universal rule, it drives me nuts when people place periods (and/or commas) outside the quotation marks. It's just...so strange and awkward-looking.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-14 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It's definitely not an universal thing.

[identity profile] green-glee.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Nazi should be banned as a descriptor for anything other than nazis.

By the way, why should it be capitalized?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Proper noun? As with most political parties.

Who fucking gives a shit, seriously. You really care that much?
get a life.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, words have meaning and we use them to convey messages; if you use the wrong word, you convey the wrong message.

Isn't that spelling, not grammar?

[identity profile] checkerblob.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you're right.

[identity profile] nicheledres.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
You're correct, but I think "grammar" is generally taken to mean everything from spelling to sentence structure to to punctuation and more. It's kind of the umbrella term that encompasses all of that.

(But, then again, I'm just speaking from my own personal experience as a copy editor – not saying that the above is universally true – and the way the word's been used in the various organizations for which I've worked.)
