This shit pissed me off so much when I watched the episode that I actually ranted to two people in real life (who don't even watch the show) about it for well over an hour. I would normally try and keep my tv viewing thoughts/opinions to myself/online but I felt House (the show) really crossed the line here. I mean if the writers had tried to pull that stunt with any other sexuality/whatever there would have been an uproar but as it is it seems to have passed most people by.

I'd like to make it clear that I'm not involved in House fandom in any way and to be honest I'm only still watching the show for the most part because I've been watching it since the beginning and I'm a completist, and yet the damn programme still managed to piss me off to this extent.

WTF were they thiinking when they made the episode? How did that many people sign off on such a retarded and small-minded storyline? The producers/writers/actors should be fucking ashamed of themselves.

[identity profile] saya22.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. I mean, they wouldn't dare say that people who are homosexuals are either lying, sick or dying right? But they actually think that aces would be okay with this? And that uninformed people would not feel that their stereotypical perceptions are justified? Wtf writers? They're just as bad as Glee writers!

[identity profile] misco.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
Haha. So true. Glee is just... I mean on the odd occasion I happen to see part of an episode (and believe me I try to avoid it) I'm literally covering my face with my hands because I know something horrible and offensive will be on screen. IDEK how people can be fans of it, I just... yeah.... I'm at a loss for words.

The House writers make me laugh though because they've been putting this show out for what... eight years? And they still manage to fuck up like this? Who are these fucking people?

[identity profile] saya22.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
I used to watch it because Chris Colfer's acting is amazing (and still is), but it gets more and more offensive with each episode that I simply cannot watch it anymore. And the media keep patting it on the back for tackling serious issues...I mean, wtf? They're tackling it insensitively and offensively, stop encouraging them!

[identity profile] misco.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
I know, right? Literally no show makes me rage like Glee can (and like I said I barely watch it, I have zero investment in the characters and yet...) my b/f turns it on sometimes just to watch me go up like a volcano.

Obviously I spend no time around the Glee fandom but I've gotta figure that are some serious SJ issues discussed there, no? I did a quick google search once to see if I could find any online rants about the way Glee portrays certain things but came up pretty much empty-handed. So I don't know and I wasn't willing to read through anymore posts extolling the show's virtues. The media's coverage of Glee is gross but then again the media's coverage of most things is gross.

Take it from me then, who follows Chris's development but hate that he's still in Glee, EVERYTHING was handled offensively. In EVERY single episode. I cannot believe a show can suck so hard, but Glee defy all expectations. Don't even get me started on their stand against celibacy and virginity (frigid and stuck up!). Geez, I'd hate to know what their stand on asexuality. Probably even worse than House.

This. All day this. It's like the last word anyone needs to hear on the show.

I feel bad for you because y'know at least I don't give a crap about the characters so it only offends me in a general way; it must really suck to actually be invested and still get screwed in cruel and unusual ways every week.

I did see an episode once that dealt with celibacy and it revolted me so much I had to turn over. I'm sure they'll be whacking asexuality before long though, I mean why not? They've had a go at offending most other minorities.

And the House thing... yeah it blew and I hated it but somehow I think the way Glee deals with stuff is worse because I don't think there's that many young teens watching House and looking up to the main characters (IDK maybe there are) but I doubt it has the same teen audience as Glee and what kind of a fucking message is Glee sending out to these kids? Gross. Gross. Gross.

Sigh, the damnest thing is, it has so much potential, and the cast really bring their characters to life, but the producers got greedy with the iTunes sales and the writers try to pander to the tween demographic and they don't seem to even have any direction in mind...even the cast seems confused about the messy plots!

If you think the celibacy ep was bad, wait till you see how they handle bisexuality, homosexuality, teen pregnancy, slut-shaming, bullying and even suicide. If they can handle these topics with the sensitivity that they deserve then it's okay, but ffs they're just horrible and tacked-on to pull in the crowd. And everything gets automatically solved with a musical number >_< I keep getting more and more horrified with each passing episode. I daren't even think about the mixed-messages kids will get from this show.

Oh, there are plenty of rants about how offensive Glee can be if you look in the right places. I've seen and participated in plenty of discussions about it.

Of course, they've managed to take a total shit on homosexual relationships at least once.

I don't know the name of the episode, but the cure for the disease of the week was a kidney transplant. The patient's partner offered to donate a kidney and turned out to be a good match. Lucky patient, right? Except that conversations between the partner and House made it abundantly clear that a) the partner knew her gf was planning to end the relationship and b) the partner was donating the kidney because she knew her gf would never leave her if she felt like she "owed" her partner for something that big. Even House, manipulative douche that he is, looked sort of shocked about it.

If House has been a shining example of non-fucked-up lesbian relationships since I quit watching then one fucked up relationship wouldn't be much of a problem. But I'm betting it hasn't been.

[identity profile] saya22.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Jeez, I don't watch House so I never knew they screwed that one up too. What the hell is wrong with the writers?

[identity profile] misco.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
You know what, I actually forgot about this but, yeah, this sucked too. IDEK why I was so surprised about the asexual thing because like you say it's not like this kind of crap isn't par for the course on the show.

Also you would be right to take that bet. The best they've managed to do is a half-arsed portrayal of bisexuality.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, House portrays ALL relationships as fucked up. I never got the idea that they were saying "well obviously their relationship sucks because they're lesbians hurr hurr" it was more like "everyone's relationships suck because this is House, no one can be happy."

[identity profile] odannygirl7.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of people actually tweeted the writer of the episode right after it aired about how it was offensive and she gave a faux-pology (I'm sorry you were offended) and said that the higher ups forced her to portray asexuality that way because House needed a problem to solve, but that she had done all this research (but even within her tweets she didn't seem to understand that attraction =/= behavior) and thought it was so interesting and had really wanted to put in some lines about how asexuals could be the next phase in human evolution (general consensus was that if that's what she thinks it's probably better that she was only allowed to do so much damage). I mean... she seemed really surprised that aces weren't totally thrilled with this representation. She said that she thought that people would google asexuality after the show and find out all about it... that that was her, like, goal or something.

[identity profile] misco.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
Ah thanks for that info, I did wonder what the reaction in fandom or whatever had been like but I really just couldn't bear to wade into those murky discussion waters. (Yay for F!S I guess)

That writer sounds... well... like an idiot. How do people get into the position of writing for such a popular show and yet still be so uninformed? The next step in evolution thing? OMG I had to read that twice because my poor old grey matter couldn't believe that this was her defence... or... justification? And blaming it on the higher ups is so low, like yeah maybe they were all stupid fuckwits regarding this issue but seriously if I had been in her position I would have been like... "ummm no I don't think I'll be invalidating a section of society today, if House needs a problem to solve I'll think of a different one after all I'm supposed to be a fucking writer."

She said that she thought that people would google asexuality after the show and find out all about it... that that was her, like, goal or something.

*Wows* Oh I see, she was trying to inform the kids. House as educational tool. It's a pity the show got cancelled maybe next year they could have had House have a bet with Wilson that evolution isn't true after all and Darwin only wrote about it because he had a tumour pressing onto his medulla oblongata which somehow produced some badly CGI'd cell things which disintegrated in his bloodstream and made him imagine all that orchid stuff and really he was just a man of God and OMG how disgusted would he be with his life's work if he could have known about his illness and what it did to him and now let us all become creationists because House says so and have bible study sessions as a choral version of "You Can't Always Get What You Want" plays in the background. And (a drugged) Wilson chases a chicken. And House limps off looking smug. And everybody lies. The End motherfuckers.

Yeah, I'm not bitter. (I'm not even asexual lol)

[identity profile] saya22.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've read her "apology", what utter crap. If they had cared they would've made one of the character remain asexual, and if she didn't get why asexuals were pissed then their research was bull.

[identity profile] cakemage.livejournal.com 2012-03-13 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Goddamn. Shit like that is the reason fandom_wank has the tag, "writers are often pompous douches."
