You are not alone. Its actually a big worry for the production team that without the novelty value, or a real Star Trek character in it, the reboot+1 might flop. Badly.

My secret. I kinda hope it does.

My secret. I kinda hope it does.

Why?

(Anonymous) 2012-03-14 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I want to see some real Star Trek back and not some creatively bankrupt, failed fanfic based on an idea that was considered second best back in the 80s. Before Star Trek TNG they considered recasting Kirk and Spock as a bunch of Wesleys to retell the 60s series. It was considered a worse idea than what was TNG's first season. Bad idea then, bad idea now. I'm all for telling new stories, but they should have kept going forward, not pissing all over what had already been done.

real Star Trek character

Yes, as opposed to Kirk, Spock, Bones, Uhura, Chekov, Sulu, Scotty, Pike...

;)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-14 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll give you Spock, there was a real Spock in it, but I didn't see Shatner, Kelly, Nichols, Koenig, Takei, Doohan, or Hunter in the film. I did see a lot of cosplayers (doing some rather poor acting too) though. Maybe that is who you meant.

AU versions of them, yes. Thing is? AU means it's not canon.

And I say this as someone who *liked* the reboot characters.

they needn't worry. There's not a snowball's chance in hell that movie is going to flop. There have been people holding their breath for it since the last one came out, and all the announcements and leaked photos are just driving people into a tizzy. Hell, by the time it comes out it'll probably be able to earn its entire budget back on the Cumberbitches alone.

lolol I suspect you are onto something, anon!

Same here. NuTrek was good at what it was (a brainless action movie with lots of explosions), but it wasn't Trek.

Considering the awfulness of the first movie, that Mr. Nimoy's small part could *not* save - i'm not surprised they're worried.

I'm not invested in if it 'flops' or not - people who like it, like, and more power to 'em, but omg, i thought it was utterly awful.

This thread is full of some horrible anons. :/ But in any case: you're not alone, OP, and I wouldn't feel bad about it. You're not required to like every single Star Trek-based thing ever to be a fan.

....aw. I mean yes, Spock Prime is my heart, but I thought the first movie was delightful in many more ways than just his part in it. But hay different strokes etc etc

and also, yeah that might mean you're not really a fan of reboot!Trek, but that doesn't make you a bad Star Trek fan.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
He was the only thing I liked about the movie so you are not alone, OP.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like a bad Leonard Nimoy fan because I couldn't choke down the reboot, even though he was in it. (I watched *Fringe* for him, for pity's sake.)

(Also, regarding what someone said upthread about the reboot being an AU - is that true? Like, it's actually established in the movie that this is a parallel universe/alternate timeline/etc.? That would be interesting to me if so.

I've always thought of the reboot issue as being like the CSI spinoffs. Even if you liked the original, and even if the spinoff had the same universe and same basic character archetypes, it wasn't the same cast, thus not the same feel, and whether you like the spinoff depends on your opinion of that new feel.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
It's established pretty clearly in the movie that it's an alternate timeline. There's actually even a conversation to that effect.

Your analogy about the Reboot and CSI spinoffs is actually really apt! I love both TOS and the Reboot, but I can understand why it was not some people's cup of tea.

[identity profile] van.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
It's a canonical AU. That's why you have Spock Prime (Nimoy) and Quinto's Spock in the same film. One is in from the original time line (60s series+movies) and one is from this new timeline that gets created in this film. Events happen VERY differently for this cast than the TOS cast. While I don't ZOMG LOVE!!!!!! New Trek, I enjoyed it. And I enjoyed it BECAUSE they established it was an AU. I can ignore it completely and it doesn't touch or rewrite my TOS cast at all.

This is random, but there's like, an episode of Red Dwarf (popular 80s BBC scifi comedy if you're not familiar) where the main character, Lister, has an experience where he is wiped out. Another Lister is in his place--basically the #2 sperm in the load. I kind of weirdly view the whole New Trek cast like that. They're the same characters, but they're "Sperm's (or eggs) in law" as Lister called him. That's why they look similar, but not the same, but have the same names. XD HEY IT WORKS FOR ME. Maybe it'll work for someone else.

I think it's worth watching. It's got some crap, but it's mindlessly entertaining. And if it leaves a bad taste in your mouth, well, you can always turn it off and rewatch Spock's Brain. :D

(Anonymous) 2012-03-19 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the info, both of you! I'm probably still not going to rush out and watch it, but neither will I actively avoid it in the future :)

[identity profile] duae.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like nuTrek because it is a different fantasy.

Kirk was Grissom or House (s1-s3 at least) A respected captain who was very good at his job who's strong will makes some of the 'stuffy' higher ups roll their eyes, with a backup team of competent but interesting characters.

nuKirk is Harry Potter or Luke Skywalker. A kid who finds out his REAL daddy was important and that he's fated to save the universe with his rag-tag quirky crew of misfits, even though the 'adults' want him to pull up his pants, cut his hair, and get off their lawn.

Nothing wrong with either fantasy, but I liked the old one better. So I probably won't be watching the second at all.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-15 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a different stage of life for the characters, is what. Like people were pointing out about the Uhura secret last week, Nuhura might yet grow out of the confrontational mode into more of the style and grace of the Uhura we knew before. There's time for it. Old!Kirk had achieved some of his standing by being a bit of a wild thing in his youth. Old Bones did have that nasty divorce. I don't mind it so much as a possible origin story, although I will say I don't exactly trust Abrams to grow the crew up properly, especially not with the massive plot changing events that have occurred. It's like the germ of an interesting story is there, but unfortunately we're most likely getting the 'high school' AU version.

Wow, all this hate on Nu!Trek is kind of bumming me out. I liked it, and I still like TOS and TNG (not so much anything else). I get not wanting to watch the sequel for lack of Nemoy, though. His Spock is an awesome character.

+1

I like TOS, TNG, Nu!Trek, and not much else in the franchise. Interest!twins!

What the fuck is this thread? NuTrek was amazing, haters can run to the left and directly off a cliff.
