i didn't ask if you were religious, i asked if you lived in a sea of true believers because dude. most religious people are not like that at all. they're supposed to be, and the religion encourages them to be, but dude. no.

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
you asked if i believed that and i was just assuming you were trying to ask me if i was religious so you could laugh in my face or w/e

i understand that a lot of religious people are hypocrites, especially conservative ones. but once again, if you gave those people a strict choice, they'd pick god/jesus/etc over sex/drugs/being assholes/etc. they may not always act christlike as they should but that doesn't conflict with what they place above all else when it comes down to it

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
i was asking if you believed what you said, not if you were religious, my bad.

but you didn't say they'd pick god over sex though. you said MOST RELIGIOUS PEOPLE would pick god over EVERYTHING ELSE IN THEIR LIVES. and that means family, loved ones, principles, etc etc. religion goes far, but not that far and especially not for MOST RELIGIOUS PEOPLE dude wtf

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
ok if god came down RIGHT NOW and was like what up yall i want you to come with me and leave all this shit behind

theyre gonna pick god i'm js

like do you understand what religion is and why people have it like the whole eternal salvation having a place next to god's throne etc because that is ETERNITY vs temporary worldly shit that are talking about

above all, the religious believe/understand that god is wholly good/just and stuff so he would always be the best choice, he's not gonna be like p.s. fuck your family lol

so really by picking their god theyre picking everything they could ever want or need, so like um yeah i totally believe the vast majority of religious people would pick god over this earth

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
that doesn't fly. you're changing the scenario now by having god coming down in person and being like whaddup homies and leaving the entire original argument behind. if god proved himself to be real, of course everyone would go because it would cease to be a matter of faith or religion at all and be a matter of fact. that's not what we're talking about though, and currently religious people do not know for a fact that this will happen, and something like that happening would change the entire concept of "religion" to begin with, invalidating the entire argument

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
does it make a difference? not to the religious who already believe he's real, i mean come on lmao

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
it does, actually. religion is built around faith, which is defined as belief in something you don't know for sure. christian people don't know, but they believe and have faith, thats the whole point. think of the story of the town that's praying for rain, and brings their objects of faith, and the little child who brings an umbrella.

if god comes down and proves he's real and is all sup bros, that changes everything about faith

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
maybe it changes everything about faith, but it changes nothing about whether or not religious people believe in him. if they believe in him either way then the scenario still stands but ok for your sake just change the act of god physically coming down to god appearing in a ~vision

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
that's still twisting the argument. a vision is still an act that would "prove" to many people that something exists, and the "fact" that they had a vision still remains.

to recap, what the original debate was about was religious people currently, now, without any outside forces acting on them, being asked to choose between their religion and "everything else in their lives." you say "almost everyone" would pick their religion and i doubted that greatly and laughed some. there we go

agree to disagree?

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
fuck ok so then they just read the bible and they believe all the shit and then asked themselves, would i pick god over all these worldly things????

because yeah they are gonna choose god ok

but sure if you think they wouldnt then thats cool too idrc tbh lol

Er, there are instances in the Bible of God doing exactly this...

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Does making bets with the devil count as an actual reason?

if they gave themselves to lucifer then lol sucks for them buuut

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
No, I mean the bets god made with the devil that people would still worship him even if he destroyed their lives. I would hesitate to call that a reason. It certainly wasn't the human's fault that their god has a serious gambling problem.

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
You're referring to the story of Job.

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
are you talking about job's fiasco because from what i understood of that, god made the "bet" with satan simply to use him to bless job in the first place. he used job as a means by which he could send a message to satan, and job was happier for it.

a lot of awful shit happens in the world but god never promised we would be free of worldly tragedies.

DA

Job's torture was pretty fucking unnecessary.

I've also always been really suspicious about God hardening Pharaoh's heart to fuck up Moses's mission to free his people THAT GOD GAVE HIM TO ACCOMPLISH- I mean, did God want to save his chosen people or didn't he?

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
lol it always amuses me when people try to understand god and get all pissed when they think smth he did was ~out of line

DA

Why is it amusing for them to read a story and judge the actions of a character in it? I get that you're on the "He's God and therefore anything he does is good even if it doesn't conform to any definition of the word" but that doesn't make it stupid for them to judge the story for themselves using actual morality. Especially when people like the OP's friend are trying to get them to base their life on it because God is the definition of love and good. Is it wrong for them to actually check the Bible out? That's part of what religious people do too.

because it's people judging god and that's funny

It amuses me when people cheerfully accept the idea of a God who doesn't even attempt to adhere to the same moral standards he imposes on his creations, basically because he's bigger than we are. Might makes right, that's a great reason to want to spend eternity with someone.

In the old testament a LOT of people get punished due to the actions of someone else.

Hell, it was Passover last Friday and part of the Seder explicitly states that it was part of God's plan that the Jewish people would dwell in Egypt and be enslaved for 400 years before being freed. Sucks to be someone born part way through those 400 years.

[identity profile] hooves.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
If you claim to be religious, but you don't hold your gods/God above other things, then you're not really a believer at all, so this doesn't apply.

So I'd say that ALL religious people look at it like God > Everything Else.

Anyone who doesn't is probably not actually a religious person, just someone claiming to be.

Just like that whole, "You can go to church every Sunday but that doesn't make you a Christian" thing. Just saying you're religious doesn't mean you are.
