This was my reaction as well, but with how well the more vocal of the fanbase reacted last time I doubt she'll be any more than the background pony she was to start with.

want to know why everyone thinks she's mentally disabled I have Strabismus, which means I have misaligned eyes, and it causes people like me to be clumsy and accident prone because we have no depth perception. So why the assumption that she's mentally handicapped and not just near sighted as all hell?

I think it was more about the fact that fandom named her "Derpy," which is basically slang for mental disability played for laughs. Where they made that leap, I don't know, but you find a lot of macros of people with odd facial expressions with variations of "derp" in the caption, so I think it was (in their minds) a (relatively) logical leap.

I'm not a fan so I'm speaking from an outsider's point of view, but I don't understand why people are so angry about her name being changed from Derpy to Dizzy (or was it Ditzy)? I wouldn't consider it a slur, but it still seems a little mean and I think Dizzy sounds cuter and more name-like anyway...?

Considering how many people acted like assholes over Derpy (the death threats from both sides, the attacking of multiple people who work on the show, people finding Yamino's old home address), I REALLY doubt she's going to be a featured character anytime soon.

And plus, really? She was meant to make us aware of mental disabilities? I thought she exists because the bronies were all "LOL LOOK AT THAT ONE PONY WITH THE WEIRD EYES. DERP A DERP A DERP! SHE LIKES MUFFINS AND DELIVERS MAIL LOOOOOL!".

i think the point of peoples' dislike of her was that fact that her 'derpiness' was for 'haha laughs' which is kind of insulting.

If they could write her in a way that's not insulting, that would be great. I think they sort of touched on the topic in Hurricane Fluttershy, but having characters around with disabilities that weren't a joke and were part of the community would be really cool.

Though everybody who had an opinion about her probably hates the other side so much now that any new developments with her would just stir up more wank and awful behavior. The smartest thing for the writers to do would be to just let it die off, and that's what's probably going to happen.

All of that good stuff is already being done with at least half of the mane six. Twilight, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, you could read them as something other than neurotically. They have breakdowns and we watch them overcome with help from friends. They aren't just their problems, they're well rounded characters with weaknesses and strengths who do things besides have anxiety attacks and bouts of paranoia.

Derpy on the other hand is a one note joke. It would be nice if she had been developed beyond that (and with a different name. Even on south park as a silly sound, it is used with characters who they show as being the dumbasses of the episode.) but the pile up of traits that could all have been fine on their own went in a very unfortunate direction.

Yeah, well I'm glad they changed the name because the effect on the child fanbase trumps anything the online adult fanbase wants. Some places it IS offensive and I would hate for a child to be hurt by it - however unintentional.

Especially over a cameo character who didn't have the meaning the more extreme death-threat giving bronies claimed.

See, I agree that if they showed Bubblecup (My preferred name for her) as having some sort of impairment or disability and have other ponies helping her out with it and there being acceptance and kind treatment of her, that would be great. I had a problem with the episode and my problem was that she seemed to be disabled and Rainbow Dash was yelling at her and berating her for it. Personally, I have a disabled kid and seeing a character that seemed disabled, get treated like that on a show I watch with my son, was not okay with me.

My son and I have a story I made up for him though where Scootaloo can't fly, and that's why she lives in Ponyville and has adapted by getting around on her scooter. I'd honestly love for them to include something like that, myself.

See now, I'm the opposite. Derpy was crafted by the fans. A background stock made into something.

No matter how she was portrayed, giving her a true portrayal was going to be dissatisfying. The best thing to do is leave her in, but make her background again. Let her drop a piano on Twilight occasionally, but that's it.

If she WERE to be prominent, then she needs a PROPER introduction (mentally handicapped or physically or no) and NOT portrayed as a one joke pony whilst acting the way she was.

Sorry, but no. And the name has to go. It doesn't even fit with the naming patterns that's prominent in MLP.

She was written poorly and treated badly, all because she was different. And even then, that wasn't even part of the plot.

She was there to make manchildren happy and go "LOL, OUR FAVORITE R******* PONY IS ACKNOWLEDGED!! LET'S ALL REJOICE AND MAKE EVEN MORE DUMB, OFFENSIVE JOKES ABOUT HER!!! :D"
