I like 'Tom Orville Roddam' actually, because those are all real names, 'Marvolo' on the other hand feels very 'made-up'. So yeah. Well done OP.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-02 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
But 'Marvolo' sounds like a ~sinister, dark wizard, pureblood kind of name. Roddam sounds like ... well, like you said, a real name. It's too basic.

Yes, because names like Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, Severus Snape, Minerva McGonagall, and HERMIONE Granger all sound perfectly reasonable.

*shrug* some people are better at anagrams than others. Also, it's a children's book.

true! that's why I feel silly for over analysing it so much! I have spent way too much time focusing on toms name lol.

IDK, I actually didn't think of it the first time I read it. I was 12, so it was a surprise for me. Again, the earlier books were written for children, so as an adult, I guess it would be easy to find out. And DOM TROLL DOVER. LOL. okay.

For me it always broke suspension of disbelief that he took his real name and was able to get "I AM LORD" out of it and then decided to just re-arrange the rest of the letters to make whatever super-wizard name he could come up with using the remaining letters.
What if his name had been Thomas?
Voldhemortas?

Also yes your names are much better.

seriously this secret was super pretentious...but what bugs me about it isn't even so much that, but that it makes me kind of sad that you let your apparent exceptional cleverness ruin an ENTIRE BOOK for you.

I really like the first three. I somehow didn't guess it when I first read it. Then again, I was ten and I had to re-read them again later because I didn't retain a lot at that age, for whatever reason.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-02 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Not only are the names you came up with basic and boring as all hell, but you're missing the point: they're not your books or your story. JKR did what she did- deal with it already.

Yes, it's almost like it's a children's book. All I know is when I was in the correct age group I didn't get it.
(Yes I know children's books can have mature themes, adults can read them, kids aren't dumb etc etc, but they still are directed at kids. The writing style was clean and simple so that kids could easily read it, so the plot is not going to be wildly complex. Of course it's not going to impress you much at 20+)

(Also the name 'troll' would have been even more ridiculous)

Wow, pretentious secret...

Most people don't read books and look for anagrams of every character. You must be the only one. Congratulations, what a gold star?

I like the name Tom Marvolo Riddle, partly because Tom Riddle sounds fairly plain, but the Marvolo is pretty sinister sounding. And then there's the fact that his name is, itself, a riddle. I think that alone trumps any other anagram.

I don’t know, she didn’t really go for subtle when it came to most of the names:

Sirius Orion Black – the dog-star hunter with the dark family
Fleur Isabelle Delacour – not even trying, just calling her a flower
Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore – meant to invoke someone who fumbles/stumbles/dumbles along
Dudley Dursley – a dud
Cornelius Oswald Fudge – fudges up everything
Bellatrix Lestrange – the strange female warrior, wow
Luna Lovegood – it’s a real surprise that she’s all whimsical and friendly, isn’t it?
Remus John Lupin – (he’s a wolf – shh!)
Draco Malfoy – might as well just say, ‘Bad guy, here’
Narcissa Malfoy – hmm, could she be concerned with appearances?
Harry James Potter – ordinary, average, everyday
Kingsley Shacklebolt – Auror (locks people up), becomes Minister for Magic
Severus Snape – sibilants very suggestive of a snake, plus both severe and cutting
Dolores Jane Umbridge – takes umbrage at a lot of things

And I kind of thought that was the point – that the reader was supposed to get an immediate impression based on the name (although, some are obviously red herrings). Honestly, I’m a little surprised there wasn’t someone prominent in the books with the name Dick.

Adding myself to the list of people that didn't notice it when they first read it. But then again, I was 6, which is entirely the point. The book was written for children (at least, at that stage it was) who are much less likely to notice those things. Besides, Marvolo sounds cool *shrug*
