TBH, I thought most of the relationship stuff in Korra was because Korra's been really isolated her whole life, so almost all the different types of relationships are new to her, romance included. Plus there's the fact that Korra is older then most of the gaang, so she's have different kinds ties to people. (And she has the benefit of living (at least at the start) in peace time.) I mean, Aang had a crush that Katara did reciprocate, but they had a war to stop and a world to save, you know?

And really, the show isn't all about ~true love~ and all it's problems, that's just episode 5 (so far). I mean, did you see episode 6? Holy shit that was amazing!

[identity profile] despatch-boxing.livejournal.com 2012-05-13 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this.

She's 16, with all the strong feelings that come with that age, and Mako and Bolin are probably the first kids of her age (of any gender) that she's ever met. There's no way she's not going to have a strong reaction to that.

Much as I hate the romance subplot (and I'm afraid I do) I can understand why it would come up so quickly. I'm just hoping it stays down for a bit now.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-05-13 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep! I mean, there weren't really any other kids where she lived, and the oldest of Tenzin's children is still 6 years younger then she is.

I mean, I don'thate some of the romance subplots (I personally think that Asami and Mako were adorable), episode five was a bit annoying, and I hope that it happening then will prevent it from happening for the rest of the series.

[identity profile] antiva.livejournal.com 2012-05-13 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I hope they wrote it in that quickly to get all the sexual tension/love triangle things out of the way and just focus on the plot. I'm not too fond on the overfocus on the romance things, as much as it makes sense for Korra and the others perhaps.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-13 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Not all 16 year olds have strong sexual or romantic feelings. Why couldn't she have a strong platonic reaction along the "omg friends!" sort instead of automatically going for the sexual/romantic subplot?

[identity profile] nyxelestia.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Because at the mass level, that's what the viewers want. I mean, seriously, look at all the shipping insanity of fandom, especially on Tumblr - they don't give a fuck about the plot or politics or any of that. They only care about the romance.

Under these rather unfortunate circumstances, I'm actually quite happy with the way they did it - yes, it was really awkward, but they basically got most of the romance out of the way in like an episode and a half, and can now go back focusing on the plot.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-13 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem is that they came out of the gate with episodes that basically shoved the love triangle (or square considering Bolin got in on it a little) right in our faces. They didn't even give us the luxury of getting to know the characters, just a "here you go, some romance" to get this already batshit fandom frothing at the mouth.

Don't get me wrong, I love ATLA and Korra but the people in charge of both of them need to stop looking to the rabid fanbase to find ideas. Some of us just want story without the needed addition of romance being shoved down our throats not even two episodes in.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-05-13 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair to the creators, it was originally going to be only 12 episodes long, so everything was going to have to be a little more fast paced.

And, IDK, I feel like the four episodes were enough to set up the triangle, but I wish that the episode 5 events had happened later. (Though I am glad that they got it out of the way. If the love whatever had been a major issue throughout all twelve episodes, I would have been annoyed, you know?)

[identity profile] kikkyo.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I felt the same way about ep 5. I actually enjoy love triangles and the tension they create, but I'd have preferred 5 to expand the Amon storyline at least a little bit and give us some background on the other characters rather than being Mako/Asami/Bolin/Korra only. But I am glad they got some of the tension out of the way. I don't think it's completely done with though.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Me neither, but at the same time, I kind of feel like, even if it's not done with, it's done with enough that it won't be a problem right away, you know? Like, I feel like these three (four if Asami ever actually gets told anything) are willing enough to keep the focus on the big picture, rather then the little picture, especially after the events of episode 6.

[identity profile] kikkyo.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and I think it will help to drive the story along. I think that getting the big blow up out of the way for now yet still having some slight tension between the three will spice things up in the pro-bending matches, especially with going up against Tahno and his team where they'll need to be on their toes and working together as a solid group. I haven't actually seen ep 6 yet though so I can't really say how I think it'll play out with everything else... unless Asami is linked to something the fire ferrets or Tenzin don't necessarily approve of which would be kind of fun to see.

Idk though, I think if Asami ever found out, the shit would hit the fan all over again and just amp up the level of annoying. D:

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Watch it. As soon as possible. I can get you links, if you want. Promise.

And, yeah, there'd be tension for sure, but at the same time, I feel like Asami kind of deserves to be told, you know? It's not fair to her to keep it hidden. :/

[identity profile] kikkyo.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, I think I'd wanna know too if I was her. I'm kind of thinking, it's gotta come out at some point, and in a way I'd like to see her and Korra at least get past it and have a friendship. I don't ship them though.

And I really have been wanting to see it. I usually get shows from itunes if I miss, but they have been SLOOOOOOWWW this weekend with LoK. Uggh.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I would too, that's be awesome. :)

Here's (http://www.gogoanime.com/avatar-the-legend-of-korra-episode-6) the site that I use. You have to watch two 30 second commercials, but I'm pretty sure that there aren't any more interruptions. If you want to, I'd love to hear what you think about it once you're done! (But you don't have to.) :D

(Word of warning, though, it's lagging a little on my computer. Then again, everything is lagging a little on my computer...)

[identity profile] kikkyo.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, my computer does the same thing. Thanks for that though, going to watch right now~

And I will get back to you on it. :)

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yay! I'm really curious as to what you think. :)

[identity profile] kikkyo.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
A;PHAUOAIHG AMAZING!

Oh wow, I don't know what to think about half of it right now! Did Amon seriously just... do what I think he did? Poor Tahno. D: That kinda changes things a bit lol. I have to admit, I wasn't expecting the competition to end as quick as it did, but I'm glad they didn't shoe in a win for FF too, it makes things seem more realistic. Up until now I was expecting the pro-bending to be a side plot to the underground revolution, but it looks like they're going for an all out war instead. At this point, I'm definitely glad they got the romance drama out of the way. I think there's gonna be some surprises there though because I can't imagine it would take long to learn where the Satos stand- though I personally think they're siding with the sleazy politician but I don't think he'll stop being sleazy just because he's fighting on Korra's side. Hmm.. lot to digest though. Wow.

Also, that announcer had me cracking up during the attack! I don't quite know whether to compare him to Luna Lovegood or not, funny stuff though. xD

Bleh, edited for clarity. D:

TBH, I thought most of the relationship stuff in Korra was because Korra's been really isolated her whole life, so almost all the different types of relationships are new to her, romance included.

...This makes so much sense.

EPISODE SIX WAS INDEED AN AWESOME SHOW OF ANIMATION/ETC. :DDDD

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-05-15 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I was thinking about it, and I realized that Korra probably hasn't had a lot of contact with anyone outside of the Order of the White Lotus, Katara, and Tenzin and his family, so everything that happens to her is going to be amped up, because it could literally be the first time she's ever had a chance to feel that way.

OH MY GOODNESS IT WAS SO AMAZING I CANNOT EVEN. WITH THE POPCORN AND THE ANNOUNCER AND EVERYTHING HOLY SHIT YES.

[identity profile] natural-blue-26.livejournal.com 2012-05-15 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
THE ANNOUNCER WAS AWESOME AND HAD NO PLAY BY PLAY BOUNDARIES AT ALLLLL

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-05-15 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope! Actually, he's on my "to cosplay as... someday" list now, because of how awesome he was! I mean, he was just... So. Cool. :D

[identity profile] natural-blue-26.livejournal.com 2012-05-15 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that'd be cute! I'm actually confused why I haven't seen a million gifs of this guy flying around yet...

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-05-15 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Me neither. I'd do it, but I don't know how to make gifs. |D

Maybe someday I'll figure it out, and that day shall be a glorious one! /yes

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-05-15 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
:D

(I mean, I've heard some ways, but they all involve programs I don't have for my computer yet. ^^;)
