This reminds me of a fic I read a long time ago about a gay bender couple Arghh I can't remember

But yeah IA

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-05-13 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
TBH, I thought most of the relationship stuff in Korra was because Korra's been really isolated her whole life, so almost all the different types of relationships are new to her, romance included. Plus there's the fact that Korra is older then most of the gaang, so she's have different kinds ties to people. (And she has the benefit of living (at least at the start) in peace time.) I mean, Aang had a crush that Katara did reciprocate, but they had a war to stop and a world to save, you know?

And really, the show isn't all about ~true love~ and all it's problems, that's just episode 5 (so far). I mean, did you see episode 6? Holy shit that was amazing!

IA. I've just started watching A:TLA with my sister and I've been keeping up with Korra, but episode 5 kind of put me off a bit. I think episode 6 was really great, though, so hopefully they just wanted to get this love square out of the way in an episode?

Also I wanted to love Korra because I love badass ladies but I just ended up being a fan of Bolin. So. That's a thing.

[identity profile] zenity.livejournal.com 2012-05-13 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? A:tla had a romance-centered episode too. It wasn't as early on in the series as this, but still... For all of a:tla there were hints of romance all the time, at least once an episode. :\ I don't think it has anything to do with Korra being a girl. Aang had just as much as a love interest in someone as Korra does.

And I think the writers would like to keep their show on the air more than they'd like to explore non-hetero characters. They'd get shut down so quick, angry parents and such. :| What do you expect?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-13 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt it's because she's female. More likely, it's because she's *older*. The main characters in the first series were too young to deal with romance. And HUGE part of the ATLA fandom was devoted to shipping. This is what most of the people who watched their show wanted.

[identity profile] vivalana.livejournal.com 2012-05-13 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Episode 5 centered around shipping in a way I personally found very amusing and, thank goodness, got all the cards laid out on the table so we can concentrate on other things, like pro-bending and Amon, etc. It's not like the plot hasn't been moving forward rapidly on those ends.

A:TLA had a lot of romance too, but it had a longer season so the relationship arcs could get spaced out. There was Sokka/Suki, Sokka/Yue, Aang's crush on Katara, that entire episode with the Village Girl/Aang/Oblivious!Katara triangle, Katara's crushes, etc. ~wuv~ and relationships didn't, imo, diminish the show then and it doesn't now.

What exactly were you expecting? Seriously. This is a kids show on Nickelodeon. A cartoon. Are you honestly expecting a deep canon exploration of non-heterosexuals here? Seriously? Seriously?

.... Seriously?

Um, when I was Korra's age I was a bundle of boy-crazy hormones. This show is centered more around relationships because the characters are at that age where it's more common.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2012-05-13 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
W/e OP, I agree with you that it's disappointing to see so much canon focus on shipping now that we've got Korra as the lead. You can easily come up with "reasons" for the show to suddenly have a bigger focus on romance but the fact remains that the whole thing was created by someone somewhere and nothing had to be any particular way and I don't believe it's wholly a coincidence that Korra is a female lead and is/was suddenly the centre of a love triangle.

Having said that, hopefully ep 5 was a fluke and we never have to waste that much time on it again. Ep 6 was great.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-13 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
of course they're all portrayed as heterosexual, you moron. blame nick and the insane parents who think homosexuality can't be in kids shows, not the people who made LoK. you really thought you were gonna see some same sex couples on this show?

[identity profile] xelestri.livejournal.com 2012-05-13 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
In fairness, the creators said they enjoy romance plots, ergo, they are going to happen. They happened in ATLA too, though there wasn't the "potential love triangle" plot.

Also, they have thus far really only dedicated one filler episode to the romance plot at this point, so I wouldn't be willing to say as soon as we got Korra, the show just turned into a focus on that.

[identity profile] margerydaw-s2.livejournal.com 2012-05-13 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
One episode = the entire show.

[identity profile] amanda-violet.livejournal.com 2012-05-13 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Since episode 6 came out, I'm considering any and all whining about episode 5 to be utterly irrelevant. Sorry! It was a mediocre episode, but anyone who thinks that the show is ~all about romance~ is just flat-out wrong.

ONE episode focuses on romance.

"AAAAAHHHH IT'S ALL ABOUT ROMANCE AND EVERYONE IS OBSESSED WITH RELATIONSHIPS!!!! AAHAHHRRRRRRGGHGHFGl;rALFNSDN VL!"

...

Seriously, y'all. Calm the hell down.

Maybe it was a mistake for the show to actually deal with the relationships in a mature fashion, given the nature of its fans.

I think the closest you were going to get with gay relationships in Avatar or Korra was with Azula. Azula/Suki (noncon) or Azula/Ty Lee.

Ty Lee is totally bisexual in my books. She's... flexible.

Actually, if you take out Episode 5, there hasn't been that much romantic emphasis in the show, definitely no more than A:TLA. I'm of the opinion, as are many fans, that Ep 5's romantic focus was so that the show could get that out of the way and go back to focusing on the plot.

Korra has been isolated most of her life, so there's a lot of awkwardness in her relationships with people to expected, including/especially Mako and Bolin. But by now, as choppy as the progression is, they're back a well-functioning friendship and we can basically ignore the romance geometry.

[identity profile] 09019.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
This. So. Hard. All of it.

And as we know from this weeks episode..... [spoilers]

It's so frustrating. I understand that romance is and has been an aspect of the avatar series, but this is getting ridiculous.

I'm getting tired of shows that are too cowardly to have characters that sit outside of romantic hetero-cis-normalcy. I think the only main character without a specific romantic narrative is Amon. Just, jesus christ..... even veiled queerness would be a godsend at this point. And that's in so many shows, and children's shows. It's not unusual or "risky".

I just don't get this fear/muting of queer people. Not just the lgbt, but ace and even just "I don't give a shit about relationships right now" humans. Just. Argh.

I wouldn't include Tenzin's girls in the Everyone Is Heterosexual theory. When I was that young, I hadn't had enough exposure to queerness to recognize what my feelings about certain other girls really were, and they certainly didn't stop me from having phases where I'd get excited over [heterosexual!] love stories. In fact, it probably enhanced my interest because I expected that one day I'd find the right boy to fall in love with and have my own epic [heterosexual!] love story.

tl;dr is it's now in my headcanon that Jinora is gay or bi and doesn't realize it yet.

I would have loved it, and squeed beyond all fanboy squeeing, if Bolin had eventually come out as gay. Although, A) This is a "kids show", so the network probably would never allow for a main gay character, or any for that matter, and B) I could honestly do without any romantic subplots at all. They mess with the flow of the show for me personally.

1. No-one was 18 yet, tru love as a teen for ALL of them?!
2. Obviously life is incomplete without a partner and this partner will be found while a teen and the first person you crush on ever 8|

In regards to LGBT representation part, it's really a shame. Avatar gets away with a lot of things that are pretty dark for a children's cartoon, and somehow even the most innocent displays affection would be too much for children if it was same-sex. Mass murder? That's okay. Two men or women holding hands? Way too far!!! I know we aren't "there yet" but if anything can break down that barrier, it would be Avatar.

ugh, yes. I definitely agree. I haven't even thought about it that much before now, but yeah, most of females on the show are all about romance... (to be fair though aside from Toph, Azula wasn't really either, and she was a great character imo) but yeah they're in some ways throwing away Korra's character with what they've been doing with her. Yes they've shown lots of dimensions to her character but ffs I feel like almost half her screen time so far has been in some kind of relational dynamic with the guys =/

I still think a lesbian Korra would have been awesome. and avoided SO MANY annoying tropes
