Gatsby = rich white people problems

not everyone's cup of tea, but it still makes for an intriguing read

To me it was more: Rich People are Crazy, than rich white people problems.

Rich White People Commit Adultery and Kill Each Other. Coming to a theater near you!

So now murder is a white thing?

CHECK YOUR PRIVILEGE CRACKER.

Human drama and adultery = white people problems, oic..

This. Good to know only white people have drama in their lives.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
The whole "first world problems/white people problems" thing is really... weird, for real. Like, nonwhite people do things other than sit around and starve and be noble and be noble, starving people. We have feelings too. We are, you know, people. I mean, thinking that Gatby and Co. are annoying is perfectly understandable because that was the point, and I wish more books like this were written about POC, but yeah. Not only white people have drama in their lives.

You sound white. You honky ass honky

I know, right?
It's really kind of insulting to poc, really, when you think about it.

*good to know you're not nobly starving as you type*

You missed the rich part, btw. Notice I didn't say white people problems.
I didn't mean that problems like drama and adultery are exclusive to white people, but the book happens to be about rich white people experiencing problems, not poor non-white people experiencing problems.
IMO the people in the book came off as pretty privileged, since the time period the book is set in has non-white people who probably have bigger problems to think about than adultery (and I'm not saying they didn't have to worry about adultery and relationships drama). Of course the book is set up in such a way that there's no need to think about non-white people. I happen to think about these things even if they're not mentioned in the reading, so of course I'm a little biased. Doesn't mean I'm dismissing the actual focus of the books as irrelevant or as something to scoff at; I just pointed out what the focus of the books looks like to me, personally.

Not here for race-wank.

I'm interested in the movie's soundtrack

[personal profile] jazzypom 2012-06-03 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
Baz Luhrman's (sp) musical taste is inspired. Not a fan of the lead actors (DiCaprio, Maquire nor Mulligan), so will give the movie a miss, but will keep an ear out for the soundtrack.

I want to see the movie too. I think it being more visual to me will make me like it more.

You're not really supposed to like any of the characters. That's the point.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
^this.
(Jordan was arguably pretty fierce and liberated and I liked Nick a little, but Gatsby and Daisy and Tom? Bleaugh. The perfect portrayal of the kind of person I hate, and that's why I love that book.)

I don't think you were supposed to enjoy the characters but even with that in mind, I didn't particularly like reading the book anyway so it's understandable.

To your point about wanting more non-romance movies set in the 20s... I have this urge to tell you to dig really deeply into some British period stuff? Because I feel like maybe those movies are out there.

Funny, I only just finished watching Midnight in Paris. This movie would probably strike a chord with you, OP, if you haven't watched it already.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Not just you, OP. There are a ton of books I SHOULD like that people keep saying are wonderful!! and classic!! and honestly I just can't stand them. I'm doomed to be the philistine amongst my art loving friends.

(And frankly, not being able to like The Great Gatsby is less awkward then never having really enjoyed Tolkien in any capacity. Try floating that one past people, sometime.)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I hope the creation of this new movie makes English teachers so wary that kids will just watch the movie instead of reading that they stop assigning this tedious fucking book! No one else should be made to suffer through it!

I seem to remember hating the fuck out of the characters, but ADORING the writing. Which I think was kind of the idea, honestly.

I would hope that you're not *supposed* to connect with the characters.
