I love Tony(both in comics and movies) but why would you want to be him?

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-06-02 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Good looking, rich, powerful, genius, superhero. I can see a lot of reasons OP might want to be him.

[personal profile] theinvincible 2012-06-02 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
hmm you know that's just a part of him.

Tony Stark hates himself, he is an alcoholic, tried to kill himself with alcohol(even tho he pulled himself later). he is depressed all the time. he is a fucked up character that's why I love him and find him interesting but I'd never want to be him

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-06-02 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah but you don't know about OP's life. I personally would trade a lot to have the type of life Tony Stark has. Hell, I've already got the suicidal tendencies, self hate, alcoholism, and depression. Sure would be nice to have the money, job, friends, looks, power, etc to go along with it.

[personal profile] theinvincible 2012-06-02 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
fair enough

I just don't want people to think him just a playboy with money. he is a really deep character

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Pity the movies don't show enough of that. :(

I thought they did an excellent job of showing Tony as a character with depth. A lot of that came from the subtle moments that RDJ put in. Just small facial expressions during key scenes (like that expression when Bruce admitted to having attempted suicide before).

This. At least his issues get to be meaningful and impact other people's lives, people who value and care about him.

I'd guess OP is just talking about movie!verse Tony, who aside from a justified nutty Iron Man 2 seems a little more well-balanced than comicbook!Tony-- especially in Avengers.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
He has a reactor in his chest. What else do you need? What armor? Who cares, REACTOR IN HIS CHEST.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, unless I'm forgetting something the reactor doesn't give him any superpowers it just keeps his heart from getting shredded up by the shrapnel. Unless you're just talking about the sexiness of the reactor, then yes, yes, I agree.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
talking about the sexiness of the reactor

Yes. I would want to be him just for that. Screw the billions of dollars, REACTOR. GLOWS IN THE DARK.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, then we are on the same chapter here.

And it apparently blocks Loki's mind-control scepter powers completely, although it's not entirely clear how (as in, would anything artificial between the staff and the heart be sufficient, or is it specifically something about the arc reactor? I favor the second opinion, myself, but that's just me).

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm assuming you're referring to the movie? I haven't seen that, but I'm also not entirely up on all the other universes.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Also that would an hilariously obscure superpower to be lusting over. :D

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-06-02 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a theory floating around that because Tony built the arc reactor after Howard's prototypes, which may have been (it's been a while since I saw the Iron Man movies, so I can't remember if this was confirmed or not) based on his attempts to reverse-engineer the tesseract, that the arc reactor has some sort of Asgardian-based tech in it, which is why it stopped Loki's staff. But that's pure fanon at the moment. It would be cool though, since it would tie together the different movies even more tightly.

[personal profile] omorka 2012-06-02 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
This is actually remarkably close to an idea the Spouse and I were kicking around the other day, but I hadn't figured in Howard's having actually seen the Tesseract in action. I am officially adopting this as my new fanon now.

[personal profile] majorshipper 2012-06-03 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
That is an AWESOME idea, and it's totally my headcanon now, until proven otherwise.

[personal profile] zogblaster 2012-06-03 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. I'd been assuming in the movies, since the whole "magnet draws shrapnel away from my heart" thing wouldn't explain why he needed to keep it or why he'd go through what looked like a heart attack when they were switching it out, that really it was now functioning as either a pacemaker or a power source for an artificial heart he'd built. Which he wouldn't want to advertise.

So, I was assuming that the sceptre disn't work because Loki was tapping it where the heart should be, but was only getting machinery. Which would also make it possible for Tony to have guessed it was likely to happen.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-06-03 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I just assumed that it was because the arc reactor blocked the scepter, but as usual, fans other than me managed to fanwank up a big cool theory ;)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I assumed it was something to do with the arc reactor being a powerful electromagnet.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Even then, only if we're talking about movie Tony.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP but I want to be him because he can make wonderful things into a reality. I know he has his flaws but I guess this is a personal thing.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with this. I'd want to be able to build anything I imagine! He has the brains and the resources.

Average person invents a transparent StarkPhone, good luck buddy. And forget a suit than can go Mach 3.
