yeah, it kind of sucks. I mean... I have accounts on all those sites (I'm not even sure why), but they don't really seem to suit fandom. They sort of suck the discussion part out of fandom and focus more on the visual side, or in the case of twitter the short burst of excitement or not-elaborated-upon opinions. I'm sorry op =[

yup

"focus more on the visual side, or in the case of twitter the short burst of excitement or not-elaborated-upon opinions"

Those sites are popular because those sides of fandom take so little time (and sometimes effort). They're like "fandom express".

I agree :(
I recently started a tumblr, but it just feels so... flat. It's like I can't really figure out who people are, or how to talk to them...
And everything goes by so fast. People are just zapping pictures back and forth, and I feel like I can't engage emotionally.

ugh, I hate Tumblr's format because it just kills discussion.

Personally, I'm burned out on fandom "discussion" because it mostly consists of tiresome wank over the same few topics, punctuated by people picking fights over subtleties of language.

I only had a tumblr, but I deleted it after a few months.

You miss one day, one single fucking day, and good luck trying to catch up with your dashboard.

(Plus how terrible its archive system and navigation are, and good luck finding anything in a 800+ pages tumblr if they don't tag properly, and oh god infinite scroll, kill it, kill it with fire.)

Plus the difficulty in maintaining a proper conversation without having to install disqus or missing e.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-12 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I've tried to follow tumblr and failed too. It's just too distracting.

Oh, and want to see, say, the first twenty notes in a post with hundreds or thousands? Have fun clicking "show more notes" for the rest of the hour.

A+ comment about killing infinite scroll with fire. Infinite scroll always freezes browsers.

IA. I like reading and writing fic, so LJ/DW plus AO3 is all I need to enjoy fandom. I don't give a shit about any other sites. There's no content there for me. And I'm fine with that; if fangirling isn't filling enough of my time, I can always write more.

I search tumblr by tags but...there's just so much to go through. I check what I want when I want and stop when I want. Any other way...would just be too hard to follow imo. Even twitter can be difficult to keep track of if you follow too many people, and while you don't necessarily have to read ALL tweets...I have an awful compulsion too.

Honestly OP, you are probably better off without these sites.

+1

These sites are terrible for those of us who want to read every single little thing in order.

I can only stand people posting their stuff on tumblr if they actually tag their stuff. Like seriously, you want me to sift through your reblogged shit just so I can find the next chapter? Fuckkkk. Also, tumblr for some reason loves freezing my browser. I only go on tumblr for the art blogs nowadays, it's just too tiring to find shit.

argh this!!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-13 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
A fanfiction author I like opened a tumblr for her fic, specifically (to post sneak-peeks and respond to reviewers).

She started that way, but a few days later she started reblogging a little picture here, a little gif there, and now she uses it to reblog all sorts of fandom pictures, interviews, gifs, etc. and her fanfiction updates all but died.

And because she doesn't tag at all, it's hell trying to find her fanfiction stuff in between dozens upon dozens of unrelated posts.

sigh

I never got a plurk, Twitter just seems dumb and pointless, and Tumblr takes FOREVER to keep up with plus I hate the format and user interface. I keep meaning to start keeping up with Tumblr one day but I just find it unpleasant, even if I sometimes really like the content.

I think there's enough fandom to satisfy me here, at least for now. It already takes up a fair amount of time.

I tried to look at Tumblr once and it was terribly confusing to me. I couldn't figure out who was saying what originally or how to follow the flow of the conversation. But I don't feel deprived or like I can't participate in fandom because I don't twitter and etc. There's plenty fandom on DW and LJ and AO3 for me. :) I feel your pain, though, OP.

Smartphone fandom! I think one of the reason tumblr fandom is so fast and shallow is because it's hard to type on a phone, but easy to sketch and take pictures. I miss discussions and lengthy essays about minute details and people reading and writing long fanfic.

I'm kind of the opposite? I was on LJ all the time but all my fandoms were slow or dying, and I kept seeing people say things like, "Found this on tumblr blahblahblah," and when I finally up and joined...it was like a shot of fandom adrenaline and now I'm more active than ever! It's definitely tough to keep up--miss a day if you've got a dash with decent activity and you're lost--but it's a lot of fun as well! Depends on how you interact with fandom.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-13 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like tumblr is more active sometimes mostly because you don't have to create content, people just endlessly piggyback on others. So even those people who can't draw, write, make vids/gifs, or even meta well are suddenly flailing on tumblr cause they can do shit.

i kind of agree. i don't have any of those, and fandom feels so blah for me these days. i just want everything to move back to LJ or something similar.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-13 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Out of all of them, Plurk bugs me the most because it literally demands your attention, giving you status based on activity and friends and crap. At least with Tumblr and twitter you can forget that they exist and there's no consequence for it other than not knowing what's going on with friends and needing to catch up.

I'm so with you, OP. A couple of my fandoms have moved entirely to Tumblr, and I've had to resign myself to not being in those fandoms anymore. I can't follow Tumblr. I've tried. I don't know if it's a result of my learning disabilities or what, but I can't parse anything that goes on there that isn't a standalone post. As soon as people start interacting, it all gets jumbled and I can't understand what's going on.
