*shrug* I never considered performances to have to be based on completely accurate personal experiences. It's a show. If you like it, that's all that counts.

That song was totally addicted, and now I must go YouTube it because I haven't heard it in eons.

Wasn't there some shading things with their managers or them posing as being together before they were exposed as not or something?

Only heard a couple of their songs, but they were super catchy! And even if they aren't actually lesbians, that doesn't mean you can't enjoy their music and the message in it (though admittedly, I haven't heard enough of their music to know if it has much of one).

Wish I could give you recommendations anon, but I've got nothing. Hopefully others will have something for you!

Yay, t.A.T.u. secret! I kind of wish this was on LJ so that I could use one of my icons of them...

Anyways, I don't think that is a bad feeling at all. Though they are not really lesbians, they are still supportive of their gay fanbase and the songs themselves are really positive. The video for "All The Things She Said"/"Ya Soshla S Uma" is full of sexy girl-on-girl tropes, but there is also a lot in the video and song that is really powerful and honest. Also, the music itself is really good!

if you like J Metal, there's always onmyouza (or Onmyo-Za) . classic metal w/ 2 lead singers, male and female

wait, wasn't tatu more like dance/electronic than metal? I went through a Tatu phase, before I moved on to the rest of my lesbian music obsession. I never cared that they were fake! :)

So I'm not sure if this is your thing then, but Tegan and Sara are adorable identical twin lesbians from canada and most of their music is angsty love songs. They've been around for a long time now, so you've got a few styles to chose from, from folksy to more electronic.

ETA: forgot about this gem from the eighties about underage lesbian lust. Hilarious :D

If you like punk, I'm not a huge fan of Sleater-Kinney anymore but their album Dig Me Out is amazing. Lots of songs about women loving women.

Urgh, tatu is so gross. No wonder people don't take lesbians seriously.

I used to love them too, but after finding out how pedo-pandering/skeevy their manager was, I can't quite enjoy their songs anymore.

I don't even care that they weren't really lesbians -although it was disappointing, I admit-, what bothered me is how the man was looking specifically for young teenaged girls to make the group.

I remember 'All The Things She Said' as being one of my favourite songs as a preteen and I still love their music. Tbh, I'm glad they pretended to be lesbians because even if they weren't, it made me see from an early age that being gay was acceptable. True story.

Lesbian musicians!

Since you asked...

Awesome KCRW show on this exact topic: http://www.kcrw.com/etc/programs/ob/ob100609lesbian_musicians

Some musicians you might like:
Tegan and Sara
Sleater Kinney
Tribe 8
Le Tigre
Alix Dobkin (folk, but too influential not to know)

A friend of mine really likes The Ditty Bops. They're a married couple who make quirky cute music. It's not a kind of music that I normally listen to, but she'd play some of their songs for me when I was feeling down and it picks me back up!

If you like metal, you should try Otep. Be aware that a lot of her tracks are creepy and violent, though.

I like TATU as well. As far as "pretending to be gay"... how many famous idols have pretended to be straight? I'm a lesbian and I like their lesbian songs. So, yeah.

Wow, and I actually started listening to their music again just last week! One of the many ways I find to procrastinate away from studying...

They will forever be my favourite guilty pleasure, tbh. I've always loved that dark electronica genre. I know a lot of people in the LBGT community disliked their faux-lesbian act, and with good reason, but when I was younger they actually helped a friend of mine deal with her homosexuality from a young age. When it eventually came out that they weren't really gay it didn't affect her that much because she had more or less moved on from them by then, but she's always said that TATU were largely responsible for helping her to feel more comfortable in her skin as a young lesbian.

Oh my god, that's why Amy Pond always looks familiar to me! She looks exactly like that red-headed girl from Tatu! 0_0

Do you mean metal bands where all the members are women, or bands with women vocalists? Because if the latter, look into gothic and symphonic metal. Lots of women vocalists there. (If you want recc's I can give them :)

She's a solo musician - not a band - but if you like actual lesbian musicians singing about liking women I've always really liked Jen Foster's music.

One of my favourite Jen Foster songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJOP3v5g544

Did anyone mention the Indigo Girls yet?

Their schtick was ridiculously pandering and their music is embarrassing, but damn if it isn't catchy as hell.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-20 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Only like, one or two of their songs even had blatant lesbianism as far as I know.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-20 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure if the style of music will fit your taste but here is an online radio show that talks about and plays music with openly gay lyrics. http://www.queermusicheritage.us/
