I'll see your movies and raise you History channel "What if" shows. I freaked out in a friend's friend's house because something was on and I made them change it because I had my fingers in my ears.

So not alone.

Man, I hear you, OP. Just the thought that some day everything ends - and even these digital footprints will cease to exist because the sun will burn out and collapse in on itself makes me sick to my stomach to think about

No such thing as true permanence.

I get this sometimes. I once made the mistake of going on wikipedia and seeing how far into the future pages for years go...and I got as far as 10 000 AD read something like "if humans are still using this calendar to measure the passage of time" (I'm paraphrasing and can't be bothered to check) and got hit by the most epic death pangs you can imagine. I spent the best part of the rest of the day worrying about what'll happen to the Earth in 5 billion years and then thinking "shit, I won't be here"

Sorry OP, I'm probably not helping!

Totally sympathize, OP. :(

I don't get anxiety attacks, thankfully, but these are scenarios I'd rather not think about. I hated that we had to watch one of those documentaries for school.

(My trick was to wait until late at night when I was too tired and annoyed at homework to think about it too hard.)

Honestly I think that's a more normal reaction. Isn't it kind of weird how desensitized so many of us have become to that idea? Because it's all around us now in pop culture and whatnot, it's like the extinction of our race or the Earth itself is passe.

It's not a thought that bothers me at all, because the idea of dying doesn't bother me (though if I was the lone survivor, yeah, THAT would be bad) but it seems like it kind of SHOULD.

The only time end-is-nigh scenarios freak me out is when the very last moments before it occurs are delineated carefully and brutally, like the riot scenes in Contagion (of course that wasn't quite the same scenario, but close).

Right there with you, anon. End of the world stuff scares the ever living fuck out of me. I have nightmares about it, and I can't get it out of my head. :( It's horrible.

Don't watch the first half of episode thirteen of Cosmos. Seriously.

(Second half of the episode - amazing and :D-worthy. First half? Oh god don't wanna die in nuclear war...)

Same here. That's why I had such a hard time watching the second episode of New Who. I closed my eyes when Earth exploded :(

It helps me to remember that even if all life is gone on this planet, there is probably tons of it on other planets/in other universes.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-28 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Happens to me too, Anon. At one point it got so bad that I had to start taking medication.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-28 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Just imagine, entire civilizations like ours could have existed on other planets millions of years before us and are now gone.

Oh man OP. I totally feel you. Y'know the trailer for Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, where it's playing "What a Wonderful World" and the Earth explodes? Scares the hell out of me. I literally can't watch that teaser because it scared me so much. I still think of it every time I hear that song...which is a shame, because it's so beautiful.

I remember constantly being on edge about 2012 at one point before I knew it was a bunch of hooey.

I'm old enough to remember the Cold War. And every time I heard a plane overhead at night as a kid, I thought it might be about to drop nuclear bombs.

I can't deal with that shit in fiction.

For me it is novels, be it the extinction of the human race or disintegration of this planet. I am better now than I was before, but I still get shivers and goosebumps when I think about it.

I find them strangely elating, which makes me wonder if I have an underlying depression or something, I'm sure you are more healthy. I don't like the ones with people surviving post apocalypse, that scares me.

My favourite type of films I think

(Anonymous) 2012-06-28 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
I love them because they make me feel this way.
At the same time I'm sad I won't witness the end of the world/humanity and terrified that I will witness it, then realise how unlikely it is, and all the different amazing ways (or not amazing ways) it could, then I wonder if humanity will populate the galaxy (therefore extinction of earth =/= extinction of humans) and all the dangers that brings and

it's a whole lot of conflicted feelings and in the end it doesn't really matter.

But it makes me love the genre so much

(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, OP. I used to have nights where I lost sleep over it. My family mocks me for it. But it is truly horrible to think about.

Post-apocalyptic sci-fi stuff is kind of compelling. But realistic, grim stories where there's nothing but death, tragedy and destruction hit me deep in my core.
