Well, first off: Wow.

Secondly: If someone is trying to rape you, and then for some reason they're like "Okay, I should stop doing this" then that's still attempted rape. They were in the process of raping you and stopped for whatever reason. That's kind of what attempted rape means. Changing his mind midway through doesn't change what he was trying to do.

I think what's confusing other anon is that "attempted" has the connotation of "tried and failed because of outside forces" as opposed to like, deciding to stop themselves.

It's a difference, somebody attempting then stopping on their own, and somebody attempting and being forced to stop that would have gone on willingly otherwise.

I don't know how to put that into concise words though.

This. The fact that he was a soulless monster at the time and actively changed this is really the only reason his character can continue to be likable for me.

The fact Buffy didn't just try to stake him next time she saw him (or much much earlier really) is only evidence of how fucked up she is independently of that incident.

What nobody ever seems to mention, though, is that before that incident, Buffy gave him a severe, unprovoked beating--seemingly b/c he didn't want her to go to jail? The relationship was mutually abusive.

The fact she was for all intents and purposes yanked from heaven and her every day now a hell didn't help.

And they almost always start with "what no-one seems to mention", like it's some new and radical thought that will of course change our minds about poor abused Spike who is so victimised by the majority, instead of being worshipped by the vast majority (of idiots).

IDGAF about "mutually abusive". Spike's vile. In so many, many ways that Seeing Red (I'd have preferred he tried to turn her myself anyway, it would have been way more interesting) is pretty much an irrelevance to me.

I have a hard time associating "eating someone" with being equally atrocious to "raping someone." Yet I don't disagree... I think my head's got them on such disparate scales of Wrongness that it seems weird to compare them at all. ~Things I never thought to compare before yay~ ;)
