Well, at least you won't have so many people dedicated to trashing you and making fun of your writing. I mean I'm sure she's laughing her way to the bank over it, but it's still something.

Not OP

Sometimes moral victory feels like empty.

There are probably a lot of others who feel exactly the same but hide it behind more respectable reasons like bad writing or the immoral selling out of barely re-written fan-fiction.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish this piece-of-shit book would just go away. Fan fiction should not be on the bestseller list.

You know, I used to think this too. But, I had this weird epiphany last night that changed my opinion. And, feel free to counter me, because I'm up for hearing other opinions on this. What about all those books that play around with characters with lapsed copyrights or characters from fairy tales, etc.? Like 'Wicked' or all those 'Pride and Predjudice and [insert killer being]' books? Wouldn't those books be considered fanfiction? The authors are using settings and characters created by another and putting their own spin on things.

The difference with the author of '50 Shades' is that Twilight isn't public domain. In 50 years, or if and whenever, the work falls into public domain, I can publish my 'Twilight' based sci-fi which features Bella as a one-eyed space pirate protecting a family of Androids (the Cullens) in a universe that has outlawed artifical life forms. Until then, it'll have to be Della and the Mullens' adventures, because using direct and identifiable Twilight canon is a violation of Meyers intellectual property rights. Just being inspired by Twilight (like the author of '50 Shades') doesn't mean she can't publish her work as long as she revises any recognizable canon bits. She may have been inspired, but it sounds like '50 Shades' is pretty far removed from its inspiration.

It's not that it's fanfiction that got published; it's that it's truly shitty writing. LOTS of barely-disguised and openly-acknowledged fanfiction has been published that was brilliant or at least a well-written tribute.

This is not those.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Actually I don't mind fanfiction be bestseller considering it's so AU that it was probably was OOC anyway.

What annoys me about 50 Shades of Gray that it's fucking T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E and it only got printed because the author's married to a TV exec, meaning she had connections that 99% of aspiring writers don't have.

Although it pains me that it's selling so well because it feeds a starving market.

Don't worry, she'll be a one-hit wonder and no one will even remember this book in 5 years.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
She'll still be stinking rich though.

I'll be honest, a part of me wouldn't mind being known for writing a piece of shit trashy book if I got to live financially comfortable for the rest of my life.

But there's a bigger part of me that'd rather be known for writing something decent. Which probably won't happen. So I guess I have to learn to accept only having an average amount of money but having principles.

Compared to some, I'm sure I've heard very little about this book. And I'm already sick of it too tbh. It's just a fad though - I'm sure people will get over it soon enough.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, why don't you just file the names off of your fics and try to publish it? You just know people are going to be looking for "the next Fifty-Shades!!!"

TIME TO STRIKE WHILE THE IRON IS HOT!

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
This! Seriously, if you pitch it this way the same soul-less assholes who have been pushing 50 shades at everyone EVERYWHERE will get $$$$ in their eyes.

It may already be too late. Shopping at Target a few days ago, I noticed two other books sitting on the shelf next to Fifty, same grey tones on the cover, same damned font style, same themes described inside.

Another month and we'll be as saturated in psuedo BDSM, Dom/sub writing as we are in supernatural vampire/werewolf love stories.

And none of it will be memorable for the writing, I imagine.

You might never be AS famous but you may as well try writing some original BDSM and getting it published, right?

This.

Apparently there's a huge demand for softcore BDSM out there! If your writing is good, why not fucking do it?

NGL I'm so confused that a softcore bdsm novel is like "BIG NEWS" . Doesn't everyone figure out their kinks & find good shit quickly? Why is "women like sexy things too" like.... news to some people?

sorry I accidentally ranted. OTL

You just aren't trying hard enough.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I get so ridiculously annoyed when I find out people I know have paid money for these books. Usually they're people who have no idea what fanfic is or that fandom exists, and I just want to tell them that if they want to read poorly writting shitty characters having unrealistic relationships there is a boatload of that for free online. Shit, they can get the very "book" they're reading for free online!

Pisses me off that she's actually making money off of this shit.

I d/led it for free, and gave it to my friends, so we can all read it, and then snark the fuck out of it. I figure if it's that popular it must be on some level an easy enjoyable read, even if hilariously bad. I haven't brought myself to start reading it yet though...

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I lol at James but I can't truly hate her. If I could turn my shitty fanfic into a shitty book that gave sad housewives fap material and make a buttload of money off of it, I would do it in a hot second. It's not like I have standards.

It's not petty at all OP. There is nothing petty about looking at something terrible and popular, knowing you can do better, and resenting its popularity.

I'm not mad at the author though. I'm mad at the readers who have no standards and lap this garbage up and encourage publishers to put out more instant-bestseller crap instead of stuff that is actually good. I don't even care that it's fanfic.

The other day, I saw someone referring to "the 50 Shades of Grey phenomenon." I can understand calling Twilight a phenomenon, but 50 Shades? It's porn! This is not new! Have these people never walked into the "romance" section of a bookstore before?

On that note, it does kind of weird me out when Barnes and Noble puts the series on its own display right next to the Hunger Games and the Twilight books in the front of the store. One of these things is not like the other...

wanting to be famous is pathetic.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Somewhat unrelated, perhaps, but anon here has a question for you all. So, anon's mother has recently bought fifty shades of grey (and the sequel, which I never knew even existed), and seems to be enjoying it. She's very much the typical repressed and somewhat close-minded technophobic housewife that all seem to be buying this book, so even if the book is terribly written (honestly, it's probably on the same level as most of the crap she reads) I'm glad it's at least widening her horizons a little.

So, the question I'd like to posit is this: I have the first book of the Administration series by Manna Francis, which has BDSM sex scenes between two males. Personally, I think the writing is great, as is the world described within, and the relationship is fascinating. But I wonder - would it be too much for her, were I to pass it on to her to read after Fifty Shades? Has anyone got any book recommendations with both hetero and homosexual BDSM sex scenes in it, so that I could ease her into it? I know I shouldn't have to, but like I said she's a little close-minded. Or maybe she's not, and I need to be a little braver/more liberal in talking to her about sex and sexuality.
