8. Hells yes. Quatre's my favorite pilot, and I'm tired of fandom turning him into a weak Super Uke. He's a kind person, but why does that mean he's instantly gay? I don't mind him being paired with that guy or the other, but it seems like most people find him incapable of finding a girl attractive. And why is he always the weakling of the group? He's a Gundam pilot, dammit, and I'm sure they don't let just any rich kid with good intentions have a Gundam. There's no way they gave him Sandrock without putting him through an at least basic physical training course. Yes, he'll know how to use firearms and explosives. Yes, he'll know hand-to-hand combat. I imagine he'd have to be more physically fit than most soldiers; there's a lot of emphasis on the strength needed to operate the arms of mobile suits and withstand damage, and the Gundam pilots have to fight more crowds and take more hits than anyone else. He's rich, but he's not a pansy, godammit! It's like people forget the weight that's supposed to come with the phrase "Gundam pilot".

(Thank you. That's been bugging me for a while.)

15. You and me both. Hahaha. If people aren't replying to you it's probably because they just don't have anything to say in response. Plus, the more outgoing and active people are, I imagine, attracted to other outgoing and active people. If you're being ultra polite, then perhaps you're not really broadcasting the waves they're looking for. Be bold. :)

18. I'm sorry to hear about your mother. The loss of a parent could never be easy, especially when it's premature. If your grief is affecting you in such a way that you would feel worse for not sharing it, then I would say to just post your feelings. I think that risking the wankery of "stupid self-centered egomaniacs" would be worth some of the weight off your chest, as well as the support of those who like you enough to care. Don't let faceless bigots get the better of you.

21. I agree. A tragic friendship and a tragic romance are completely different. I find more sadness in the loss of an innocent relationship than in the loss of a relationship based on attraction.

22. Hoshet, really? If that's true, then Lowenthal's a greater guy than I thought. Though I'd have to say that I still think his Sasuke is ill-fitted. I love a lot of his other roles, but I think he just doesn't suit Sasuke.

2. WHERE ARE ALL THE RECS? D: SOMEONE REC ME SOME LUNA SMUT CAUSE IAWTS

3. I hate lots of game character for that reason too~ 8D

8. I agree. The fandom ruined him for me, : /

15. Haha, if by chance you like another Shonen Jump series too, let's be friends? :) and oh, if you want to meet more friends, try [livejournal.com profile] animeaddme (not a member there, but I heard some good things from there) or join any friending meme?

5. Well we all feel that way sometimes I guess. For me, it's all about being aware of where you are (i.e. you are going to use more netspeak in a capslock comm than say, in an RP journal). Also, I'm more forgiving of people whose first language isn't English...they're trying to communicate, you just have to work with what they give you.

8. You're probably gonna hate me for this but...that's some quality orgasm face right there, yessir.

9. AHAHAHAHA, it looks as if this porn pleases him muchly. A+++ screencap. XD

15. I can't imagine that there's absolutely no one out there in fandom that wants to talk to you. :O Especially if you're going out of your way to be super nice and polite.

To #9:

WHO ARE YOU AND WHERE MIGHT I FIND THESE FINE LITERARY WORKS.

I AM USING CAPSLOCK IN ORDER TO CONVEY TO YOU THE URGENCY OF MY REQUEST.

11-I agree. I'm not a Bleach fan, and that is one of the many reasons I'd never want to be.

15-I...kinda feel sorry for you. =/ It's kind of odd, since I get that you're in the Naruto fandom, and it's huge. I'm NOT in that fandom, btw, and never want to be >_>

Maybe try friending other people that you think you'd get on with?

18. Sorry to hear about your mother, but you shouldn't be made to feel like you can't write about your feelings in your own journal just because some people faked deaths for attention in their journals. You're not them, and if anyone comments that you're "fishing for attention" or some bull like that; forget about it. People are cruel sometimes, and people lie... but don't let them affect you in such a negative way. Let your emotions out and write freely.

Dear 12,

Please explain to the class how what you fear is more closed-minded than referring to all non-Republican fans of whatever you watch as "vegan wiccan hippies."

Hypocrite much?

It's called "sar-cas-m", dear. Look it up.

I'm a goddamn vegan wiccan hippie and I lol'd.

I also sympathise. It's hard to admit to being different within a large established group. The idealistic part of me would like to believe that fandom, with its high population of people who are considered "different" by mainstream society, would be more accepting of differences within its ranks. Too bad it ain't always so.

Anywho, you made me think of my Republican friends, and that makes me smile.

I get very self-conscious sometimes if someone I like REALLY dislikes something I do. It really hurts for no good reason, like I'm doing something wrong for liking something.

13 - AMEN~ ♥

18 - Then why not just post it in a filtered post for only the people you trust the most to read? :/ Nevertheless, my condolences, I'm sorry. ♥

I've had friendships end - end badly, break up an entire fandom inner circle - because fo politics. Looking back, I wish politics had never entered the equation, but the truth is, speaking as "vegan wiccan hippie" (yes, even if you meant it for humorous intent, they are out there), I see how my ilk are intimidated by conservatives. I don't like to impose my radical views on the rest of the world (though any radical will see any other political side's most moderate beliefs as another radical thought...chew on that), but it's far easier where I live to go out and say you're a flag-pajamaed gun-toting Bible thumper than to proclaim you're a vegan wiccan hippie lesbian. I would get killed, most likely. Seriously. So...on the internet, you can imagine, those of us who are now in the minority (just as much as true, non-radical conservative Christians are in the minority, bless you all for being cool) try to find a place to convene on the internet if we don't have the option of being in a college town or a forward-thinking society with groups and concerts and rallies. It's hard out here fo' a pimp.

Still, IAWTS on a lot of levels. I want my friends back. I even tried to play moderator, but was basically forced in that situation to choose between my politics and my friends. I don't even know what would happen if I met them, IRL, again. We used to see each other at conventions often. I haven't seen them since. I know they think less of me for not being able to quell the drama and for choosing to stand by what I believed rather than by our friendship (LAWLS ALL NAKAMA INC. PEOPLE WILL TOTALLY KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT HERE, BUT YOU GUYS ARE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN. <3)

It's just plain tiring and I say take it outside if you're not gonna "squee".

[identity profile] chelonianmobile.livejournal.com 2007-07-26 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
#1 - YES! I got some people bashing a favourite fandom of mine over on fanficrants once, and I've seen it happen to other people. It hurts because there tends to be a faint implication that you must be stupid for liking it.

#12 - "So tell me about yourself."
"I'm studying law. I don't drink or smoke, I don't 'party', I go to church on Sundays."
"... Are you human?"
"No sir, I'm a Republican."
(Thank you, Sandra Fuhr.)

I'm a flaming leftie myself, but I have Republican friends in fandom and RL. I honestly don't see why it matters - as you say, fandom is about whether you like a TV show or whatever, not your politics. But if you're not comfortable discussing it, don't.

Thank you all for your kind words. It just... felt really good to get it off my chest.

But, filters or not, I'll remember you guys the next time I get scared about posting. <3

I tended to stay away from Quatre when I was in the GW fandom because everyone was always arguing over him. He's a cool character, but I was always intimidated by him and his fans.
