This is the OP. For the people asking why this is a secret: Every time I've seen someone else express this opinion, they were told "That's probably because you haven't read good H/C! Let me give you recs!"

I don't want to always have to explain that no, I'm really not interested in that sort of thing, and the whole concept of the genre even makes me kind of uncomfortable. Because saying that might make me look like a jerk.

First of all, I love the way this secret is put together. Old school MS paint, easy to read, pan-fandom, Dr. Seuss style language... It made me smile.

Also, yeah. Hurt/comfort is a genre that I tend to be cautious in reading.

You get points for creativity, but seriously, who cares if you don't like H/C? I don't ask to be rude - I've just never experienced anyone try to force H/C down the throat of someone who expresses dislike for it. Is that what happened to you? If so, I'm sorry that happened, but you don't HAVE to like every genre and other people can like what you don't.

This so hard. I really don't like h/c. I won't say I've never read good h/c, but even that really good h/c didn't change my mind about it. Honestly, it kind of squicks me.

From someone who loves dark and twisted and awful yet somehow gets nothing but the screaming heebies from the vast majority of h/c she has encountered:

I think for me the reason I have a squick (perhaps even a mild trigger, sometimes) is that I am a survivor of trauma, and I spent many long years wanting to feel comforted magically by those who love me. And you know what? That didn't heal me.

It's not that love, including romantic love, isn't wonderful, and not that love doesn't help. It's just that for me personally, it just makes me feel uncomfortable and weird because that's not how trauma and recovery have worked for me at all.

I don't say this to dis anyone who likes it, and I know many survivors do. But for me? I have a really rough time with it. My brain just goes "no, no, no, that's not how it is!" and I wind up frothing.

Again, though, this isn't to call it wrong. Most fiction does involve improbable stuff happening. That just happens to be my little sore spot/area where I can't shut the Disbelieving off unless the fic is completely, utterly astounding.

(Before people throw recs at me, please allow me to protest that, quite honestly, I prefer to read what I enjoy rather than hunt for needles in haystacks.)
