Oh OP, that's rubbish! I'm *sure* that wouldn't be true! :¬(

(Anonymous) 2012-07-16 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Bullshit. He would take you because of it! He would show you exactly how it absolutely DOESN'T matter that you are disabled!
The Doctor especially would show you the entire universe and tell you that just because you are disabled doesn't mean you have limits!

OP

... this comment made me cry, but... in a very good way. thank you.

I love this comment and find it to be very truthful. Word.

Different anon, but another disabled one who is in exactly the same spot as the OP.

You have no idea how much this comment means to me. Thank you so much.

This :)

I wish dreamwidth had a 'like' button for posts like this.

Not the OP, not disabled (my issues are mental and very minor all things considered), but this made me cry a little too. In a good way.

The Doctor doesn't discriminate.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Of course he would be fine with you! After all the myriad different things he's seen, a disability is not going to be even a minor issue. The only thing you really need to be able to do is run, and if you can't do that, he'd come up with some awesome doohickey to allow to to move away from villains at the speed of running.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
yeah I can't run :( I would love to have some cool futuristic alien doohickey that would enable me to "run" with the Doctor, though. it's one of my happiest daydreams.

:/ Secrets like this are why I wish there was a more diverse group of companions to choose from in New Who. Why do all of them have to be young, conventionally beautiful, abled people? Can't we have old men or women? Disabled people? Fat people? Mentally ill people? Mentally handicapped people? I personally would find that much more interesting than a bunch of blank slate, young, conventionally beautiful people.

Samesies OP, it used to always make me sad that I would probably die at the first stop because I can't run away. COMPANIONS DO SO MUCH RUNNING!

*hugs* It's not true at all. The Doctor would get along with anyone he encounters. (And don't listen to Moffat, he's silly.)

As others have said, the Doctor would probably love having you as a companion.
I wish I could write fanfic, so I could write you a drabble of you two travelling together :)

I know how you feel OP. When "This is what I'd do if I were a Companion" discussions come up with my friends, I don't participate. My wheelchair and awesome time travel adventures just don't go together.

Four would definitely make a quick getaway device

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Eight through Eleven? Sadly not so much. Largely because of the attitude (problem) of the Nu!Who writers mentioned upthread. The best companion in NW was Donna Noble, IMO. And look how THAT ended....not to mention the fridging of Ten!Master's ex-wife...or that the Master even HAD a wife in the first place (I only saw bits and pieces of those eps, don't flame me). But don't get me started.

/OMG Y SO BITTER OLDSKOOL ANON

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
What I wouldn't give to see the Doctor with a Companion in a wheelchair, even if only for one episode. Seriously, they could have some fun with that.

OP, I know exactly how you feel. I am heavy and I can't do anything more than a job without pain shooting through my legs due to a condition from birth. I couldn't do the running from danger that the Companions of the Doctor must deal with. But us less-than-perfect humans still have a lot to offer to the Doctor and I bet he would bring us along anyway.

Hopefully, when Moffat finally leaves the show, we'll actually have a shot at a Companion who is not female, young, pretty, perfect love interest material.

I imagine I'm magically not-disabled, but then I wasn't born with this condition. And I don't really imagine I'm me, so much. In fact, I like to imagine I'm the Doctor, too. So um, maybe ignore what I said.

But anyway, I'm sure Wilfred Mott can't run too far anyway. And in Big Finish audios, Six had Evelyn as a companion (who was also old). Sure, old =/= disabled, but running isn't a requisite criteria.

The fact that you think this indicates a failing on the part of the show, not on your part.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-17 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Not true. Not even a little bit. If he heard you say something like that he'd drag you across the galaxy and back and get you to save a planet on your own just to prove it doesn't matter how physically capable you are, just that you're clever and willing to help people who need it. Every human is special and brilliant to the Doctor, no matter what.

By the time you got back to Earth, you'll have saved his life at least three times. Guaranteed.

bb you know the doctor would never think that

(Anonymous) 2012-07-19 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
I made a secret like this about a year ago, because I have an autoimmune disease that has no cure, and said I kind of wish I could be the Doctor's companion so he could take me to some awesome future hospital to get cured, but that I didn't know if the Doctor would approve. People wrote lots of nice comments and I'm now convinced that if the Doctor were to get a disabled or otherwise health-compromised companion he would be really sweet and caring about it and do anything he could to make things easier for them.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-19 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, if you're in a chair, he'd trick it out so fucking hard!!!

You saw the rocket powered robot in Waters of Mars, right? That was a few seconds with the sonic screwdriver. Imagine the Doctor taking the time to do a proper build on a chair. It'd teleport and hover have repulsor beams and a force shield capable of resisting anything from a light rain to hard vacuum to thousands of pressures of atmosphere and holographic displays and universal roaming wifi. And it'd have a working chameleon circuit so it could disguise itself as whatever suited the region or era it was in. You co to the Middle Ages, you're riding a fucking horse.
