Well, most fandom moved there. And, when people write essays/analisis/fics/fanart/etc, it's easier to share? /2cents

Although the liking option drives me nuts. I like way too many posts a day, and looking for them later is a nightmare.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-04 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It might be easier to share, but it's definitely harder to find. For immediate exposure it's good, sure. But other than that? No.

[personal profile] ex_paola492 2012-08-04 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, def. agree on that. I've found some great stuff under some pretty wacky tags. Also the searching for stuff is a quest for... well anyone.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-04 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

I curse every day Tumblr's inability to allow us to search different tags at the same time.

&

(Anonymous) 2012-08-04 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean like searching for one tag within another tag?

http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/TAG?from_tag=TAG

e.g.

http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/kittens?from_tag=photography

da

this is a thing that exists

tumblr why your documentation not cover this

and why all your documentation not easy to find

why

Re: &

(anon from above)

WHY TUMBLR, WHY. Do you live off frustration and pent-up anger, do you?

Re: &

anon you replied to

Seriously speaking, a lot of their, er, implementations? Techniques? Systems? Whatever the word is, a lot of their site gives me the impression that every single thing must be ridiculously taxing on their servers.

I don't know how they're going to make the money to pay back their investors and cover all their costs. The paid themes and the tumblr spotlight or whatever they're using as advertisement can't possibly be giving them enough revenue.

What's their plan? Do they even have one?

Re: &

(Anonymous) 2012-08-05 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
(anon you replied to)

I've never considered it from that angle. Now that you mention it, how the hell do they even get this site up and running?

Sometimes, I swear this site is just a group of children left to run around with some shiny toys but with no adult supervision whatsoever.

Re: &

(Anonymous) 2012-08-05 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
This is just my opinion, but after reading around, I get the impression that they were simply that good at convincing investors to throw money their way with vague "this is the future of social media networks", "look at how many users we have" clever wording.

They might even believe it themselves, and because they might have a buffer of a few more years to start actually worrying about the money, they haven't taken any protective measures beyond "try to dissuade script users like missing e from consuming more resources", or maybe even the mess that is searching by tags and such is so... choppy...? To avoid wasting more server space on that.

That still doesn't explain the insanity that is infinite scrolling and why there is a limit on how many posts you can make for every 24 hours block, but I still feel that isn't anywhere near enough.

Bookmarking this comment forever.

Now if only all my posts were actually searchable. Why can i make up a tag with a unique string, but a search tells me that there is no post with my histrionic snowflake tag >:U

Re: &

(Anonymous) 2012-08-05 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
have you tried "nameofyourtumblr.tumblr.com/tagged/histrionic+snowflake+tag"?

Re: &

They'll show up within my blog, most of the time, but I meant site-wide.

Like, I'll tag some work with multiple characters, and only the first five-ish tags I've entered will appear in regular search. The rest are useless unless someone loves me enough to be looking in only my archive. It's annoying that I have to consider which tags take priority if I'm trying to share my junk with as many folk as possible. (not to mention the hassle that is making sure they are in the tag feed)

Re: &

(Anonymous) 2012-08-06 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
only the first 5 tags are meant to show, i think it's an anti-spam measure. what are you posting that needs to be categorized in more than 5 tags, lol?

As much as I'd like you to be right, this method doesn't work at all. It just shows the posts with the first of the tags.

Yeah, it's working for me on some tags, but not on others and I can't figure out what's causing the inconsistency.

harder to discuss, too.

eta: and there's the constant changing or usernames, too, so linking things doesn't help making anything easier to find.

I've had a problem with this myself. I've noticed that many conversations on Tumblr are very real-time, almost like an instant message service with pictures attached. It's great when you're there but if you're at work or something when your friends are available then you can't really participate.

That's the main thing I like better about dw and lj. The ability to take a long time between replies without losing the conversation entirely.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-04 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt

same here

I didn't use tumblr everyday, and I fell behind on everything all the time and it just wasn't fun for me.

I like being able to look through my old posts, see if they had new comments (reblogs in this case?), and have everything neat, in order and easily accessible, and tumblr is like the opposite of that unless you are a pro with tags, which the ease of posting made me forget to use.

Umm... if you check your specific feed (http:// www . tumblr . com / blog /-insert your username here-) it's pretty easy to check back and see what's come up. Any likes/reblogs/comments/replies will show up there (or you can hit the notes button on a particular post and check the list, depends on what you like to do).
