My gran used to tell me when I was small that ugly on the inside makes ugly on the outside.

Seems Cassandra Clare's inner ugliness is just manifesting itself outwardly, to me.

That's one of the most stupid assumptions I've ever heard. A friend of mine with lupus gets rashes on her face, yet she's one of the sweetest people I've ever met. Cassandra Claire might not be a model, but that doesn't mean everyone who isn't cookie cutter cute is rotten on the inside.

Straight-up ugly != "not cookie cutter cute"

Very few people are straight-up ugly. To be straight-up ugly you have to have the ugly personality first and foremost. It's the personality that warps the outward appearance, not the other way around.

I guess what I'm trying to say here is that your friend is a good person, so it will show through.

Or maybe they're from experience. In my experience it's usually quite easy to tell apart an unattractive nice person and an unattractive nasty person. The way they hold their resting expression, the way their facial muscles are accustomed to be arranged, they way the lines in their faces are set, little things like whether or not their smile reaches their eyes (look at that picture — CC's eyes are cold and slightly pulled up in a manner that suggests contempt, given the complete lack of humor or warmth elsewhere in her expression) and if their lips curl.

Nasty people often give off a vibe through little details in how they look. Not uncontrollable stuff like hideous rashes, deeply personal things like how your smile lines look. Lots of exceptions, of course, but it's common enough to be a real thing.

Attractive nasty people are harder to spot — if you're attractive it's much easier to paste a perfect plastic smiling face that can fool and/or distract anyone and make yourself seem nice.

And of course there's also that cliched-but-true thing that when you know a person is nice, they look nicer to you.

I think I get what you mean, but you've got to be super specific here or else it sounds nasty.

Kindness IS attractive, and it really does change the whole look of your face and your magnetism, so to speak, even if you're not handsome or pretty or whatever.

Yeah, stupid prejudices exist, but there is always something about the gaze and the mouth that can put you at ease in a kind person.

"Attractive nasty people are harder to spot — if you're attractive it's much easier to paste a perfect plastic smiling face that can fool and/or distract anyone and make yourself seem nice."

Tom Riddle. O__O

Yes, exactly. Most of our communication is nonverbal anyway, so for people who are unapologetic assholes, that will come through in their latent facial expressions and the way they carry themselves even before they interact with anyone.

And because of her sweetness, she probably looks a lot prettier to other people than you might at first think. It's pretty amazing how that works.

That's a really gross, ugly thing to say. A lot of people just aren't considered attractive to others -- it doesn't mean they aren't a) beautiful in their own way or b) good people.

What a disgusting thing to say, seriously.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-20 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
You really have no room to talk, though.

[personal profile] otakugal15 2012-08-20 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, seriously.

And I know, to others, I don't either.

WE ALL DON'T. But we do it anyway.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-20 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
You know, it just occurred to me: why aren't you in the Tom Hiddleston vs. Ben Cumberbatch thread if this sort of thing bothers you? Is it because they're men, perhaps, so it's okay to spend an entire thread insulting one or the other based solely on appearance?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-20 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Because neither of them ever played Kirk or Spock?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-20 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It's really sad when her M.O. is that damned obvious. If you're going to be a successful troll, you need to switch it up a little.

Aw, you're so cute, little troll-ling :)

It's nice to know that I have a little following of stalkers every time I comment. It's funny to watch you fall all over yourselves trying to make "clever," "witty" comments and look so pathetic doing it.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-20 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It's way funnier to watch you be a completely horrible person and defeat your own purpose and then get butthurt when you're called out on your shit. I got plenty of popcorn where this came from.
curseangel: (eugh!)

[personal profile] curseangel 2012-08-20 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
How, exactly, is saying that someone's appearance has nothing to do with whether they're a good person or not "being a completely horrible person"? I'm really curious.

Also: Why are you so obsessed with me? It's creeping me the fuck out.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-20 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Because you apparently think that's only true for women and not for men.

Protip: you wouldn't have internet stalkers if you didn't make a complete ass of yourself on a regular basis. That shit's hilarious, of course people are going to follow it.

For one thing, yes, they are men. Women are judged far more harshly for their appearance, and the consequences of their being found "ugly" or "unattractive" are much greater. Men don't suffer those consequences - men who are not conventionally attractive still find huge success, and people are willing to "overlook" men's unattractiveness and find them attractive no matter what -- something which is not true of women.

Regardless, both Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch have huge followings of people who find them extremely attractive and desirable, so I don't feel the need to go fight for them. They have loads of people lining up to defend their attractiveness despite their deviation from the norm. Women deemed unattractive have no such privilege.
