I've been a fan of the Monkees for over 15 years now and I'm damn glad I've never participated in the fandom. Thank you for the warning.

The Monkees! MY CHILDHOOD! I LOVED their show; never thought I'd see the day when there was a secret about them. :)

I wasn't aware there was a fandom for it though. Tumblr really does have everything! And I didn't realize Davy was an asshole...but then again I never did care about their personal lives. ~~Man, I had the biggest crush on Davy.~~

Not sure what to tell you OP. If that's one of the few places that is still active, then I guess if you want to continue being involved in the fandom you just have to deal? :/

A friend of mine met him twice, and she said he was absolutely lovely to her - he gave her a ride home one time too. I had no idea he was supposed to be an asshole either.

Wow, that was really cool of him! Greatest car ride ever.

Though I guess everyone has dickish moments, and even if he was an asshole from time to time that doesn't necessarily mean he was an awful person. I never know what to believe about celebrities anyway, so I take it all with a grain of salt.

Oh no, wrong phrasing! I didn't mean it like he was a terrible person, more like what you said - that everyone has bad days and no-one's perfect. And from what I've heard, and the above poster said, he could be fantastically kind too. Just any time anyone says anything about how they discuss Davy on this tumblr, it's automatically because you're a Davy stan and you can't take a joke or handle the fact that he wasn't a saint. I love Davy (and all the guys) but I have no problem admitting that they're human and have made mistakes.

Thank you for the advice. Unfortunately, I think you're right, and I have to just deal with it or leave the fandom. I'm usually very laid-back and go with the flow, and I've never had an internet argument before. I just really NEEDED to vent about this! (I've never posted to fandom secrets before! I was completely desperate!)

It sounds to me like they're determined to hate him, for some reason. There are actors I can't stand, but that's from their public persona, so if some fan posted about a great interraction, I'd believe them because I don't actually know the actor, so maybe they are a lovely person and they just rub me up the wrong way.

That would get frustrating, yea. :/ Booo. Just because you like someone doesn't mean you're mindlessly in love with them and don't have a sense of humor about them. Some people are weird about that sort of thing.

Awww, that's super nice! Plenty of 'regular' people wouldn't do that sort of thing, so it's cool he took the time to.

I wouldn't be able to deal with riding in a car with Davy Jones though. I'd suddenly get verbal diarrhea and make a fool of myself. My -whatever age I was kinda in love with the Monkees- self is envious anyway.

Probably, yea. It's pretty common to hear at least a few negative fan stories about celebrities, no matter how nice they seem. I don't take them too seriously.

I'm not sure what I more amused by -- the fact that there is apparently more than one tumblr dedicated to the Monkees, or the fact that the main one speculates on their penis sizes.

(I realize this is seriously annoying to you, but unfortunately I have no good advice either.)

I guess you'd expect it in a multigenerational fandom, especially one based on a somewhat surrealistic show, but the weirdness in the Monkees fandom never ceases to surprise me.

I... may be inclined to start a Monkees Tumblr. Dunno. It never occurred to me that there was interest on Tumblr. Which is the main one you're referring to?

AFAIK tumblr is the main site of Monkees fandom. Not much interest on lj, not that I've seen anyway. And the tumblr I'm talking about is Naked Persimmon. But you might look at it and think it's great - I seem to be the only one who has a problem with it! :-)

Yeah...I was like that at first! :-) Not that I mind shipping, and some of the fanfic is good. Just stuff like the penis posts - I don't know. Kind of makes me roll my eyes.

They bug me too. It's fine that they have favorites (Mike) but they do tend to get really defensive about it. Surely, criticism about Mike is just as valid as criticism about the others.

I can't ship the Monkees as actual people, but I can ship their characters from the show. It gets a little weird because their names are the same IRL as on the show.

EXACTLY! It's the defensiveness that really drives me crazy. And ITA, in real life I can't ship the Monkees, but in the show, yeah. I wish they had different names on the show - it would make the whole thing easier and less confusing :-)

Seriously, we say time and time again that Naked Persimmon isn't for everybody, that's what PsychoJello exists for...the more productive look at the Monkees. We're just there for the more surreal, ridiculous look at it. There is nowhere and no-one that says that if you don't like us you should get out of the Tumblr fandom. We're hardly a dictatorship and it seriously upsets me that people think that way, we're just fans trying to have fun and really struggling sometimes because of the opposition. I don't know how many times we can say that we don't hate Davy or whatever; yes we lean more towards Mike or Peter but we try to give all of them equal air-time, as it were.

I'm sure some people don't know how much time and effort it takes to do all this so to have people constantly busting our balls, telling us what we should and shouldn't be doing, becomes very trying and depressing. I didn't call you a dictatorship. What I said was that I was the only one I know in my circle who seems to have an issue with your tumblr. I think, from things people have said, you guys have had issues in the past with people. I don't know about those - and I'm sorry you had a bad time. But I think you both bring this defensive 'opposition!!!' attitude to everything anyone says that's not 100% positive about your tumblr. I'm not 'opposition'. I'm someone with a differing opinion (and from what I can see, not a very popular one!).

I also didn't say you hated Davy. But it is quite obvious (or at least it seems so to me) that you both lean toward Peter and Mike. I'm not saying that's a bad thing or you HAVE to like everyone equally. It's just that I could tell you both prefer Peter and Mike from your coverage and posts. It doesn't feel like you give them all equal air time, which strikes an off note when the tumblr is supposed to be about all four. That's what makes it seem to me like you don't like Davy as much as the others. I'm not pulling it out of thin air to piss you off.

I said in my secret that I can see the good points in the NP tumblr and the people who run it. I also said there have been times when your reaction to things has been justified (like the facebook stuff). But you guys get really defensive about everything, big and little. I don't like that, and I don't feel like that kind of force is needed Every. Single. Time. I didn't start a hate tumblr. I said in my secret that there are good points to NP. I'm not telling you guys what you should or shouldn't be doing. That's justification for being thin-skinned, but as someone who's not attacking you, I don't see why you need to be thin-skinned with everyone.

I don't feel like I can't participate. I just feel like I can't say anything slightly critical of NP (and that's what it is - a little bit critical...not an attack, and not bashing) because you guys would reply with one of those answers that's not a discussion, but a shut down. And then your supporters would get in on it, and I think that I would be buried alive under indignant reblogs.

Firstly, my response wasn't all to you but to the various people we've had go against us. I wasn't saying you made the hate Tumblr, I was just saying that it happened. the problem is, you are only seeing the one side of it. When we respond in defense of something, it's ususally because we've had enough...it's not a spur of the moment defensive but something that has been building. We've seen a lot of backlash against us, a lot of people talking behind our backs and not being remotely subtle about it and we let it go but it will get to a point that we feel we have to acknowledge it for our own sanity. To everyone else, that probably looks like we get defensive over everything, but trust me, we let so much slide and try and ignore so much.

Honestly, we would not flip out over criticism. But we've had so many people have digs at us, pretending it's criticism when it's not, that it's hard to take it in the light it's intended sometimes. I don't do a whole lot with the Tumblr because I don't have the creativeness with the posts, I stay very much in the realm of the website itself but it just gets me down that whenever I go to Tumblr, there's always some kind of drama. We never expected to have as many followers as we do or to become one of the top Monkees Tumblrs (I personally would trade it in because I can't handle it at all but it's Mini's playground and I know she enjoys it when things are calm).

I know you weren't saying that I made that tumblr. What I meant was that you bring that attitude - hate tumblr, people badmouthing NP - to minor things, like my complaint. That you get defensive immediately, like my complaint is the same as those other things. I didn't think you were ever accusing me of starting a hate tumblr! I mean, I get that those kind of things can make you defensive...but at the end of the day, you're still responding defensively...and maybe sometimes to people who aren't trying to engender that response. Or at least, it seems that way to me.

Well, as someone who is part of 'everyone else' - yeah, it does seem over-defensive. Hey, I'm not saying I know the whole story. Maybe you are completely justified every single time you respond to something, but as a total bystander - it looks kind of paranoid. I don't mind people disagreeing with me - honestly, I don't. But it feels like you and I couldn't disagree (on the NP tumblr) without me being made to feel like my disagreement is an attack. Maybe you guys would be completely fine with it, like you say...but the way you respond to other people (maybe all of who are haters, I don't know) maybe gives non-haters the feeling that they'll be smacked down if they voice a dissenting opinion.

Well, there are a lot of good things about the tumblr. Of course you should have a lot of followers. And my opinion is nowhere near 'chuck it in' and I hope that's not what you're taking from this. I'm just saying that the way you guys handle things isn't for me, but obviously you feel like you're justified in that. Clearly we're going to have to agree to disagree.

Thanks. But I don't quite get it. You guys have lots of supporters, who are totally on your side. I'm not 100% in your corner but I can admit that you guys have sometimes been justified in your responses (hey - I really am trying to understand your side of it). I can see that you have some haters, but are there really that many? You just seem really, really focused on your haters, rather than your supporters and casual fans, which have to way outnumber them. Again, I don't know the whole story (don't think I want to, TBH) so maybe these haters are utterly impossible to ignore. If that's the case, my sincere sympathies.
