Too busy watching the rage on twitter that "#dr who" was trending instead of "doctor who". Fucking hilarious stuff.

Everyone around me has been convulsing about this day and since I've had nothing else to do I've been watching the marathon on tv right now.

It's on in five hours, but I want to watch it nowwwww.

I'm betting it'll be either terrible or slightly-less terrible, so I'm setting myself up for some total disappointmentthat way it can be surprisingly good. I'm usually okay with the first episode of a season though though ♥

eta: Was better than expected.

Re: Doctor Who 7x01 Discussion! SPOILERS AHOY

(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it succeeded at its main aims, without being great. It:

a) reintroduced the main characters
b) got lots of daleks into the season opener, and then teased with a "next time" that had dinosaurs on a spaceship
c) got to play with the history while also giving a reason why no future dalek episodes ever need to refer to any of the older episodes, setting them free

I liked the "remind them who I am" and then deleting him from their memory thing. I liked Amy seeing the mad daleks as people, although I thought it could have been executed better. I laughed at the "daleks disguised as people, daleks on the bus!" aspect, which is so aimed at teasing children and getting them excited. I thought the "she's really a dalek" twist was obvious, but then we were probably supposed to have guessed and got that dread at the situation.

I thought they slightly overdid the "I'm so perky" aspect of dalek-girl. But I did get choked up at the Amy/Rory conversation where Rory was trying to give Amy his wristband: the whole of it, from beginning to "why didn't he just tell us?".

So, I thought it did its job, and I enjoyed it, but it wasn't a great episode.

I am not sure whether I hate or love Moffat for the Ponds thing.

Hate because it seemed like a cheap ploy to make me heartbroken about my OTP breaking up and then they make up and it's amazing and touching and uuuuughhh I love them so much.

Hate also because srsly, childlessness is their chief problem? Did Rory really make a big deal out of it, knowing what she'd been through? YOU ALREADY HAVE A BABY, well not really, well, it's complicated. I don't know, it was just weird.

Then again, the tragedy of it all put them back into focus and their OTP-ery shone through and I was happy, all in all.

Oh yeah and there were some Daleks, that was cool, too, I guess. :P

Re: Doctor Who 7x01 Discussion! SPOILERS AHOY

(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I seriously doubt Rory made a big thing about it, but it didn't sound like they'd even properly discussed it. Amy knew how Rory had always wanted children in previous discussions over their whole lives, and she (or they) found that she could no longer bear children, so she avoided discussing it with him and then tried to cut him out of her life because she couldn't give him something she knew he had always wanted. She let him think she just didn't love him, rather than talk about what was really hurting so badly.

That makes more sense, though again, not the most believable or well-written relationship issue you could've come up for these two. I assumed their marital problems would arise from being now stuck in an ordinary existence sans the Doctor, not unspoken childlessness problems.

Wait... what?!

So... they had a kid, but then Moffat that it would be AWESOME to have that child taken from them and raised by other people, yadda yadda... and now they're dealing with being "childless"?

Oh, FUCK YOU, Moffat.

A lot of people are echoing that sentiment on my Twitter feed.

I'm more forgiving when it comes to Moffat (because of conditioning of liking his earlier work so much - see icon), but like I said above, not the best written or the most believable relationship issue with these two. Still, as long as he doesn't break them up for good, I'm fine.

Amy is also now infertile which means no more babbies ever because it's not like the human race has been coming up with ways for infertile couples to have kids for thousands of years, nope.

It would have made so much more sense if Amy just didn't want children any more. 'I got pregnant in a space tube then I had a baby then the baby melted in my hands and I never saw it again until it was a fully grown adult' = valid reason to be put off having more kids.

I am good with pretty much everything except: adoption. It is a thing that exists. And when people are infertile it's a thing that they can do.

That is all.

(Edited because I somehow typed 'fertile' instead of 'infertile' and that makes no sense.)

Yes, there's adoption. Possibly also in-vitro, and every other alternative as well, assuming they can afford or consider it.

But telling folk who are infertile to essentially just deal with or get over it is pretty callous. It's still an option that's cut out, not by choice, and it does suck. About the only thing about Amy's reaction that bugged me was the childishness of not talking with Rory about it and the whole, "I LOVE YOU SO I LET YA GO," shtick. That was ridiculous. Otherwise, that sense of failure, misplaced personal responsibility, inadequacy, and resenting what had happened to her? Perfect.

I know how you feel; my dad loves Doctor Who too and he was all "do you want to watch it today with me?" and I just can't feel enthusiasm for the show anymore :( I barely paid attention to the second half of series 6 because it just didn't click with me anymore.

I loved it. Personally, I felt the whole divorce thing between Rory and Amy was a bit unnecessary since they got back together in the same episode. WE GET IT, THEY LOVE EACH OTHER. We didn't need a fake break-up. I would've found it far more interesting if they had actually gone through with the divorce. (But I mean, really, having a baby is the most important aspect of being in a relationship? REALLY, AMY? *grumble*)
I loved the genius girl (wish I could remember her name), and I think she's really what made this episode for me. The end of the episode also reminded me why I like 11 better than 10, but I won't get into that.

Re: Doctor Who 7x01 Discussion! SPOILERS AHOY

(Anonymous) 2012-09-01 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Wah? When did Amy say that having a baby was the most important part of a relationship? She said that she knew that Rory had always wanted kids, and that she knew she could never bear his children, and so she'd kicked him out. Clearly this was news to Rory, because he clearly didn't expect that to be the reason she gave for kicking him out. She'd thought it would be cruel to him to keep him in the relationship without something that she knew had been so important to him, and she never consulted him on how he felt about it all.

It blew my mind. Didn't cry but got very emotional.

Matt Smith continues to completely kick arse as the Doctor.

The twist regarding the Ponds was brutal. D A M N.

And I love you-know-who. Can't wait until you-know-when.

I'm getting my hopes up for the new companion.

Moffat being Moffat, he and his crew will dash my hopes by next year, but I like the actress who will play her.

also, I think I'm becoming attracted to her :x
