Everyone I know who likes it (and that includes me) is a geeky science type. None of them have felt like it's making fun of them.

Wait, I like it and I really can't be bothered to find the unaired pilot. Why did you watch it if you don't like the show?

I would like to present myself as your counterexample.

[personal profile] kitty_wake 2012-09-02 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
That's great, but I'm just talking about people I know in real life because although I enjoy the show I have no intention of joining the online fandom or even talking about it online - apart from this brief exchange, naturally.

Besides I've noted many counterexamples already in this thread.

OP

I'm glad you like the show. I tried to like it (if anything for my friends who love it), but I can't bring myself to do it. I just feel like the show is making fun of geeks or people like Sheldon in general and it's just a big turn off for me.

One of my friends who likes the show wanted to watch the unaired pilot. I ended up watching it mainly because I was there at the time my friend watched it. She told me that Chuck Lorre himself admitted that the unaired pilot "sucked", so I sort of got curious (I thought, "Wait... he says the unaired pilot sucked, but he has no problems with how the show is now, with stereotypes and all the rest? What was in it that was so bad?") and I gave it a shot. And, while it didn't exactly strike me as an amazing episode, I thought it was a bit better than the actual show. I especially liked how Sheldon was a "quirky" (can't think of any other words) scientist, but he was still human (he even had sex and and a sort of 'fetish' for women with bigger bottoms, from what I gathered). Whereas in the show, the writers make him act like he's at the first stage of a disease of some sort - to me at least - and it makes me feel really uncomfortable to see the writers exploiting this to get laughs out of the audience, who I always feel is laughing at Sheldon, rather than with Sheldon.

Sorry, I kind of ranted a bit. But yeah, tl;dr, I didn't go seeking the unaired pilot on my own, I just watched it because a friend of mine was watching it. That's how I end up seeing most of the show, too.

Not tl;dr. I read it!

I'm still looking for the pilot, but I wanted to nod in agreement about the Pilot Sheldon thing. My friend described the pilot to me, and even though I know I more closely resemble the Seasons 1-3 not-interested Sheldon, I would have liked it better if they'd gone with the pilot, because then it wouldn't be such a nuisance that he's (from what I hear) suddenly got a girlfriend and is interested. Plus, oh my God the idea of twiggy Sheldon being all dat ass just... I love it. It's one of those things that's so random that it feels genuine (if that makes sense).

But now I'm a little afraid to find and watch the pilot knowing Lorre thought it sucked. Not because I'll think it sucked, but if I see it and its that much better, I'll just imagine him going "This sucks. Now THIS! This is gold! ... Ha-Ha, humans enjoy finding a mate and copulating. That's great, let's make four hundred episodes with that premise!"

If I find the unaired pilot, want me to send you a link? I think I might go looking for it, because I liked how my friend described it. The characters, however, are vastly different so it might be a little surreal for a fan that's seen all the seasons.

Why did you watch it if you don't like the show?
I don't really understand this question. This isn't meant to say that you yourself are anything like who I am describing, but usually when I see that question, it's asked by irate Twilight fans, and it strikes me as such a no-win question. It's like "Read and Hated = "Well don't read it if you don't like it", but "Didn't Read and hated = "How can you hate it if you didn't even read it". You know what I mean?

I've only seen season two so far and I'm trying to work my way through season three, but it's just not interesting. I guess that as a fan you'd understand this (maybe even have advice), but my favorite episodes were the one where Sheldon couldn't drive, the Shldon and Penny prank war, Penny getting addicted to that WOW-esque game, Sheldon trying to learn how to make friends, and the one about Penny Blossoms. It's honestly not because Sheldon's my favorite, it's because all of the other characters' storylines seem to revolve around trying to couple or mate, which (to me) is a one note gag- "people like sex and these people want to find it". Really not interesting or fun.

So maybe the OP is like me and trying to give it a fair chance and look for episodes s/he likes. I wouldn't say I hate the show, but I would like to find more episodes with fun storylines like that. Even the Train episode was great because half of it was Sheldon's research paper, and the other half was more like "Three awkward fans who want to talk to their idol" than that tired coupling/mating thing.

Thank you. I wouldn't mind taking a look at the pilot.

Why did you watch it if you don't like the show? I asked that because it seems a bit odd to search out things like unaired pilots if you don't like what's actually airing - for one thing, the show is always more easily found, and for another, if you like the unaired pilot and not the show, then what? They didn't go with the idea you like. There's nothing else here you can watch. I must admit I don't fully see the analogy with Twilight you stated, because I was just referring to the pilot in that sentence.

It seems that you have the same taste in favourite episodes I do! I particularly like all the ones you mentioned. I think I'd better make something clear at this point - I'm not part of the fandom for the show, and even when I do dip my toes in fandom, shipping just baffles me. I like particular characters - who they're shagging just really doesn't matter to me. So maybe I'm not an average fan. I don't seem to be much different from you, to be honest - I just zone out more during any scenes where the characters' sex drives seem to take over. NB you might want to stop the search for episodes you like after Season 3, because next season there's a Leonard/Penny/Priya love triangle thing going on that I found tedious beyond belief and I think I can say with confidence that you will, too. (But there are a few good gags and Amy, so...)

I think everyone else gives shows a better chance than I do. The only really bad experience I've had with a promising show that spiralled into a vortex of sheer unbearability (and that should be a word if it isn't already) is Glee - gave it up after half a season I rather liked and then one and a half seasons that went from "Eh, it was pretty fun, but not as good as I thought it'd be" to "Holy shit, this is the audio-visual definition of heavy-handed and nonsensical. Not to mention maudlin." Not doing that again.*

Perhaps I've also seen a few too many criticisms of TBBT that focus on "It's making fun of nerds and geeks!" instead of things I'd consider a tad more troubling, like the lack of female characters besides Penny for ages. I mean, don't watch a show for whatever reason you like, but I swear that's the most commonly cited reason I've seen and it leaves me wondering just when geeks became a group it's not OK to poke fun at. Is it because the show creators and actors aren't geeks? It's not like being geeky isn't a choice, after all.

*Incidentally, going back to your second paragraph, I did give Twilight a chance (before I knew about the Anti-Twilight thing) and I made it about a third of the way through the first book before I put it in the Oxfam bag to grace another bookshelf - or possibly to get pulped. Always give something a chance - just not too much of one, because it's not fun.

Ok, I see what you mean now. Thanks for clearing that up. I thought the "it" in that sentence meant "the show itself", not the pilot.

And thanks for the warning about post S3- I'm not going to bother because it'll just be frustrating*, so I'll just stop while I still have the enjoyable episodes.

Speaking of high hopes dashed and "no1curr if you're dating, make with the funny", I'm currently doing a keep/delete sorting of a show that had amazing high potential for comedy utterly wasted- 3rd Rock from the Sun. It's practically tragic how much great potential there was in the "aliens studying Earth" and how the times they did use it, it was spot-on and hilarious (even thought provoking), but half the time they focused on the Rrrrghpointless relationships. I feel like I have legitimate license to bitch about this because with very few exceptions, those stupid relationship plots had no bearing on them being aliens, making it clear to me that the writers were engaging in self indulgence- you know what I mean? When you love your character so much that you want to see into their relationship lives? It's fun for the writer but the rest of us don't care; we came here for alien culture shock/observation/misunderstanding gags/assimilation! (I truly apologize; I'm just so annoyed and frustrated about it and have no one to vent it to).

Regarding that fifth paragraph- this. I haven't seen those complaints, but it's definitely more annoying that the "girl geeks are unicorns" mentality persists. That trope annoys the Hell out of me because it's so antiquated. Not only that, but it pops up even when it's trying to be positive. My constant go-to exhibit B for this is the comic Ctrl+Alt+Del. They make such a big song and dance about Lilah being a girl who plays video games. This confused the Hell out of me for years because I honestly thought that Buckley was making that stereotype up. Until I went to college, I didn't even know any males who played video games; just females. Some people don't seem to understand that if you're trying to break a stereotype, don't keep bringing up the damn stereotype, because then it's not genuine, it's just an agenda.

So glad you replied. I'm excited beyond belief to find someone who has similar tastes and opinions about elements of a show, especially the mating aspect. A person can't express the opinion "this sex stuff is boring me" in public without some random doofus jumping up to inform you "ur just jellus cuz ur alone". I realize it's not the doofus' fault, that they are projecting their own values of "one cannot be single and happy", but ... yeah, the fact is, a show is for entertainment, and when you said "tedious" that really sums it up. That's the reason I don't see the appeal of "Friends"; same deal with the hit-and-miss. Though as you said that you enjoy Amy and Sheldon's relationship, I have an exception, too, which is that I do find older female/younger male couples really interesting. I had high hopes for Cougar Town, but the dream is dead now. Super annoying, especially since it's wall-to-wall Older man/Much younger woman relationships.

Whew. That's a rant, I know. Like I said, I rarely meet people with this thing in common.
