tumblr culture

Okay, I have no interest in tumblr culture so I was wondering if someone who was could answer these things that have been bugging me.

1) Why do people on tumblr get so mad when a post of theirs gets a lot of notes, especially while simultaneously making self-degrading comments about their self-worth due to their unpopularity?

2) Is it me or is it just flat out rude to make a post on your blog complaining about the new followers you've received? Like "This dude just started following me but we don't even have anything in common, what does he wANT WITH ME HELp"

3) Why is it such a big deal for someone to reblog a post and put their opinions as a comment instead of clogging the tags? Tumblr's already shit for communicating with people, why do people want to make it so much more impersonal? Especially when people reblog and post the tags as comments, wth.

These are not things that make sense to rage over on a blog mostly used for fun and yet they are, I don't understand.

Literally all of these can be answered with, "because reasons." But I will try.

1) Probably because they notice that people aren't reblogging, or liking, directly from the source (eg: a reblog of a reblog of a reblog of a....), but rather a more popular person who happened to reblog them. A bnf, or an fyeah blog or whatever reblogs them, and suddenly the likes take a huge hike. There's a lot of people feeling ridiculously stigmatized because they feel they're not getting enough credit despite credit not actually being removed.

2) Mix of inability to take flattery, trying to be humble, and actual confusion as to why this person followed them. Every now and then I'll get a follower out of the blue, but I'll have no idea what the fuck kind of content they followed me for. (granted, I don't complain or post about it, but I honestly do wonder if they haven't liked any specific posts. sometimes I'll understand if they're in my fandoms or something.)

3) Because stupid. Er, I mean, quirkiness. It's just the thing tumblr fen does, because the person thinks they're being cute, and being indirect is cool, idk. It also leaves a lot of room for passive aggressive tagging, but the original poster will never know since they may never bother checking reblogs without anything actually added to the post.

2) I can understand confusion, but talking about it on their blog like it's a secret they don't want anyone to hear is stupid and rude. They know that person they're talking about is going to see that on their dash, or it's almost like when people whisper something really loud because they want that person to hear what they're saying.

Though, I've also seen people directly ask on their blog why these people are following them and it's just awkward because it's like putting the spotlight on someone who was unaware that they would have an interrogation just to follow someone's blog.

I think the first 2 are probably partly humble brags or whatever the term is. At least with regards to getting followers/notes. I mean I can understand being annoyed if a post of yours gets 100k notes and your dash is clogged with them constantly but it seems to be pretty common these days for people to be like "OMG NO, LOOK AT ALL THE NOTES THIS IS GETTING! OMG STOP IT!" and it just seems to me like it's so they can show off all the notes they are getting. I could be wrong though! I mean I'd personally be pretty thrilled if anything I posted got loads of notes lmao

that second one does sound pretty rude to me. I can understand being confused about someone following you if you supposedly have nothing in common but the fact is that you can't choose who follows you on tumblr. It's sort of the price you pay for posting on a site with very few ways of keeping your blog private. This kind of reminds me of a person I follow who had a main blog they posted to all the time. They then decided that the blog was getting too personal so they made another one to post more personal stuff on. I followed them there because they just stopped posting completely on their original blog; yet they would constantly complain about people following them on the second blog so they posted a whole bunch of untagged porn to get people to unfollow them. At which point, I did. I mean I don't have a problem with them wanting to keep their blog private, but now they don't post at all on their original blog, and I found everything they posted really interesting. So I feel kind of annoyed about that even though I'm not really entitled to following them or anything. I don't think this makes sense... wow tl;dr sorry!!

The last one, I'm not really sure. Tumblr just has a hive mind and all of a sudden it's a bad thing to post your own comments on a post. =\

1) it seems to be pretty common these days for people to be like "OMG NO, LOOK AT ALL THE NOTES THIS IS GETTING! OMG STOP IT!"

Yeah, those are the comments I'm referring too. Especially since reblogging them like that means they'll get even more notes, which is what they didn't want. :\ I also saw a post making rounds about being afraid to post anything witty because they're afraid it'll get over 1k notes. I just don't get why that's a bad thing.

2) People keep forgetting that tumblr's a blog and not facebook, or something like that. It makes me nervous to follow anyone because I don't want to be that person that they make a post about wondering why I'm following them as if I was some creeper. Actually, I'm kinda following someone like that, and they'll mention that they check through their friendslist to remind themselves who's following them, and I get so nervous like I'm going to fail an inspection or something. It's not as bad as who you were following, but if it did I'd unfollow them too. Which, like you said, is disappointing because I usually follow these people because they post interesting things. :[ also tl;dr

1) Do you mean if something they posted originally gets a lot of notes, or something that someone else posted that they did gets a lot of notes? If it's the former, it's because every note shows up on the dash, and suddenly it's like fifty notifications in a row that someone liked/reblogged your post and ahhh clogged dash!

If someone else reposted your content, and then it gets a lot of notes, ESPECIALLY if your original post didn't get that many, then it can sort of feel like... wait, this person is getting a ton of notes based on something I did. And there can be this faint bit of resentment, I guess, that the original didn't get nearly that amount of attention.

2) ...Yes, that is really flat-out rude. I think it's a YMMV thing, I would not say something like that.

3) No idea, I prefer commenting to putting stuff in the tags. I like seeing what people think! And generally, unless you're the original poster, you can't even go directly to someone's reblog to see what their tags even SAY without posting a comment (in which case you get a link).

1) Well, it's original posts, like people pointing out random things or posting a funny picture of something that happened to them that day. If it's really funny or weird it gets a lot of notes, and then they'll reblog with "WHY DOES THIS HAVE SO MANY NOTES?? STOP!!"

I guess I could understand if it's because of how it clogs their dash, but they never specifies the reason why.

3) I like seeing what people think! And generally, unless you're the original poster, you can't even go directly to someone's reblog to see what their tags even SAY without posting a comment

Yes, exactly!

1) Ah, like that? I think it's more sort of... incredulity that something like that DID become so unexpectedly popular. Especially if it's something reasonably cracky. Like, "Holy shit I did that in five minutes and A THOUSAND PEOPLE HAVE REBLOGGED IT. WHY."

I like putting comments too, but now I'm afraid to because of this idea that you "shouldn't." I still do sometimes though. I've made tumblr friends that way a couple of times.

as far as notes go, it starts to get really grating if a post you pretty much just shit out is suddenly getting hundred or thousands of likes/reblogs. for one thing, you see every single one of them. every. single. one. unless you're blessed with some manner of note eraser, it gets old super fast.
tumblr is really unpredictable in what they decide is the best thing ever vs. whatever the hell you normally post. true story: i once woke up to find that, in the 7-8 hours i was sleeping, a text post i had made on a whim 3 months earlier had gotten 5000 notes. that shit's not cute.

as far as the other two things go, who knows.

Tumblr is so easily entertained. I can understand how it would be annoying if you put it that way, though.

Re: tumblr culture

I don't count myself into the Tumblr culture but I think 3 does have a logical reason: It is done that way so only your followers can see what you are saying instead of everybody including the original author. It makes it more neat in a way, since if every reblog would include a comment it would get caotic, and it's to avoid people butting in and arguing with you because they don't share your opinion.

Usually those who post the tags as comments are not posting theirs but the ones from others which they found particularly good/funny/interesting

1 and 2, tho, are because people are stupid xD

Re: tumblr culture

(Anonymous) 2012-09-04 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
I think one of the reasons for 3) is because Tumblr just isn't that great for sharing comments and holding discussions, especially long ones. It's not BUILT for it: it's built for reblogging whatever the original content was. But idk, in my little corner, people tend to use tags as comments when they don't have anything different to add from the original post.

i've actually never seen the first 2. the only time i've seen something resembling 1 is when a graphics maker makes a dumb text post that a lot of people can relate to & suddenly it has 18k notes and it's drowning out legitimate notes about people liking/reblogging the stuff they actually put effort into.

3. i do this because i don't like reblogging posts with other people's comments on them for aesthetic reasons, since a million comments generally tends to clutter up the look of blog and make it less streamlined. considering tumblr caters to the visual & attracts a lot of artists/graphic designers, this aesthetic reason might be part of it.

Re: tumblr culture

1. Because often their link back to their page or a comment about the work does get removed. Other than that? Yeah I got nothing. Unless a BNF or a fyeah or some similar type of blog posts their work just like that...yeah.

2. It gets weird sometimes when a person who has absolutely nothing in common with me follows me. Because tumblr is not a medium about communication you just see what they post on their blog. I'm paranoid so yeah, it's weird for me. I blocked a few people who did this after few weeks...it's weird and I'm paranoid.

3. I have never seen that.
