Today I'm a little suspicious of the influx of "Reveal a personal detail about yourself F!S!" posts.

Voice recording, meaning of first name, ethnicity. I feel like people could figure out who some of you are based on this information.

I'm wondering if the same anon is making all these posts in the hope of narrowing down a specific username's RL identity on here or something.

Yeah, I've been purposefully not answering all of these- I did the ethnicity one because it's not like I haven't revealed that info before, but eeegh. I'm not an important enough poster to think that anyone's looking for my RL identity, but I'm incredibly paranoid about that sort of thing because some of the jobs I've had are ones where it would be really, really not good if my fannish works popped up in association to my real name.

But I don't think it's on purpose, just people being curious.

Is this a big issue for people?

I've had my yahoo handle since approx 1999 05 2000. It's the same as my DW user name, almost the same as my LJ, and I have a FB account which intersects them all.

I read most of the general comments. The only people I imagined to be nervous about broadcasting who they really are would be the ones who are consistently nasty when responding. I don't post a lot but I wouldn't be ashamed for people to know what I've said and who I am.

Am I missing the point? Am I doing it wrong?

Haha, you aren't the only one who has considered this. I'm sure in reality it is just people being curious, but I've skipped some of them for this reason.

lol the voice in my head keeps telling me I'm not interesting enough to be stalked so I'm never worried. Still, out of all of them I only said my name which sounds like it should be the most important one to be secretive about. Duh. >_>

Heh, whoever it is must have a lot of time on their hands then.

I don't really care because as long as I don't give my last name I'm probably kind of hard to find. My first name is very generic, as is my voice, and I don't really have any real presence online under my real name other than Facebook, which isn't even under the same email account that I use for fandom things. Plus, I'm pretty sure the meanest thing I've ever said online under this username is "that wasn't a very nice thing to say" so I'm pretty certain no one is looking to get me out of revenge :D

Most of my Internet handles are the same or linked together somehow, but none of them are connected directly to anything with my real name. Well... there are hints on one that could lead to my true identity, but it would be difficult to prove.

I'm more concerned about which handles they, or people I know irl, could link to me. This and ss I'm pretty okay with anyone stumbling on since most particularly embarrassing stuff is locked down or filtered.

Also certain that other than whatever I've said about my hair, most other traits of mine are pretty generic to narrow me down imo.

The name I use online isn't my legal and I definitely didn't so the voice recording one because that always seemed a little too personal for a lot of silly paranoid reasons.

I thought this from the first moment the "record your voice" thread started up.

True, we're not 100% anon on this (after all, IP logs still exist from where it was turned on, and I assume most of us are "regulars" who don't take extraordinary measures to hide our IP addresses), but I would say the "un-anon yourselves!" threads are aimed at building up a general picture of all the people dumb enough to fall for the trick.

Social engineering? DW staffer trying to get info for generating ad revenue? Let the conspiracy theories commence!
