Um...duh. That's because Brokeback Mountain was too hilariously awful to be moving.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-03 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. It was the most boring thing I've ever seen, and I usually like slow paced movies.

Brokeback Mountain was a terrible movie.

Two different genres. Not the same.

Though I'll give you a star for liking Reservoir Dogs. It's one of my favorite movies ever and I will drop anything and everything if it comes on television. Doesn't matter at what point the movie is at.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-03 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Although Reservoir Dogs is a crime drama, it could also be interpreted as a subtexual tragic romance (Mr. Orange + Mr. White), which is the comparison that I'm assuming the OP was trying to draw.

Same here, OP. Same here.

Of course, Brokeback was terrible, so that's not hard to do. But it's based on a story by Annie Proulx, and PROULX IS AN AWFUL WRITER, so that might just be staying accurate to the source.

Reservoir Dogs just—it is not a perfect movie, but it is well done. And that ending gets me, every time.

How is Brokeback terrible?

I didn't think it was amazing or anything, but I didn't think it was bad. I thought it was good, but of a genre I don't generally prefer.

What am I missing here?

(Also, I'm really not seeing how it's like yaoi. At all.)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-03 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
The pacing was way too slow, for one thing. The acting varied between wooden and Narm (though I largely blame Ang Lee; this is the same guy who directed The Hulk). And the relationship was (at least to me) wildly dysfunctional and toxic on both sides, yet presented as though it was supposed to be considered healthy and perfect. Like the gay version of Twilight/i> without the vampires.

Hmm, I didn't think it was bad per se, and I liked it more on second viewing, but here's some criticism I heard.

- It was actually just a very generic Hollywood movie, that was only "revolutionary" because it was about two men. Imagine the same story with a man and a woman - it would just be a fairly uninteresting romantic drama.

- Ennis is not so much a sympathetic character. Sure, he's partly a victim of circumstance - but still, he's a jerk to both his wife and Jack. Basically he promises them both something he can't give them, and leads them on for years.
And he's the one that the movie wants us to sympathize with at the end.

- Form over content: I.e. beautiful shots, that cover up lack of story.

- Too drawn out

- The one actual gay sex scene in that movie is pretty terrible - which is a shame, because, ya know, it's kind of essential to the movie.

etc, etc

Pleasantly surprised at the lack of SJW stanning for the film in this thread. Back in 2005 I was scared to say how much I couldn't stand it for its problematic stereotypes, even though I am gay.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-04 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm gay and I like it as a guilty pleasure kind of thing. I think when I was younger it kind of SPOKE TO MY SOUL because I was just figuring out my sexuality and it was literally the first movie I had seen involving gay characters (for some reason I guess the fact that it ended, uh, badly didn't deter me). I guess I can't HATE it for that reason

I rewatched it recently though and...yeah, it made me cringe. It's more fucked up than I remember. But still, the thought of Jake Gylenwhatever and Heath Ledger together makes up for a lot...

(Anonymous) 2012-10-04 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, here's what's bothering me about your comment: the story was published in 1997 and set in the 1960s. The movie was a good adaptation of Proulx's story, which is dated. It was billed as a healthy, gay love story, which it really wasn't.

Ugh, this movie. That's a good 'ugh'. I very much enjoy it and not just because I have a huge crush on Tim Roth.

Speaking of movies that are oddly upsetting for the genre, Boondock Saints. When -SPOILER- Rocco died, I lost my shit, like seriously bawled so hard I had to pause the movie.

This.

And I loved it when I first took a Film Studies class and my teacher was like "and now we're going to watch the homoerotic subtext in the last scenes of Reservoir Dogs".

VALIDATION.

Reservoir Dogs is so enjoyable because of the dynamic between Mr. White and Mr. Orange.

Quentin just adores all of his film relationships/romances to be tragic and I love him for it.

It warms my heart a little to see so much love for Reservoir Dogs and so much meh for Brokeback Mountain. I remember reading that story in the New Yorker and thinking it was like fanfic.
