brightblueink: Kyuubey's face. It's terrifyingly cute. (Contract?)

Eh, wear whatever you want to wear, I think. As long as you're dressed appropriately for the situation, it's all good.

For years I used the possibility of civilisation collapsing

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
as motivation to write coherent notes in maths (even if I thought it was obvious) and to write out my working neatly in full. If society collapsed, and my books were important surviving documents, could people use them to recover the lost mathematics?

It also served as motivation to fully memorise seemingly pointless things that I could just look up if I needed them in real life: what if society collapsed and only my memories remained?

Ahahahahaha I've definitely done this too! Like, in philosophy, I'll be taking notes and I'll think, "What if this notebook is all that some future civilization has to tell them about Plato and Aristotle... I'd better take really detailed notes so they can understand what things were like." It's definitely the way my thoughts run. Weird way to think, maybe. But you are not alone.

I do this as well! :D

Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if I was suddenly transported back in time with nothing but my class notes.

It helps motivate me to pay more attention, take better notes, and learn how to apply classroom concepts to real world situations.

There actually were scholars at the 13th-century University of Paris whose work we know only from their students' notes. (Any professor's worst nightmare!)

Not just that... isn't there a lot of things where we only really know about it from student's notes? I'm pretty sure there's things well into the 19th century where that's the case - for instance, de Saussure's major work, some of Weber's work. It's much more common than you would think well into the modern era.

Oh! And the big example I was thinking of is that a lot of Hegel's work was published posthumously based on notes taken at lectures he had given.

OP here

That sounds way cooler and more meaningful than my methods for picking clothes! Rock on.

i'm confident my years of playing doom and watching zombie movies will leave me equipped to deal with the apocalypse

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm 26 and I see absolutely nothing wrong with this.

Personally, I like to wear clothes/shoes that remind me of either characters I love or, much more often, my original characters and their respective universes. I dress themed quite often, sometimes more literal, sometimes quite muted. It's fun, and as long as you feel good, why change anything?
greenvelvetcake: (deal with it)

I'd like to think we'd be given at least a little warning about the zombie apocalypse so I could go home and change into the proper gear (and maybe grab some supplies and an axe.)

As for the "would a video game character look cool in this?" goes, that's a double-edged sword. Sure, video game characters look cool in video games, but that's not necessarily indicative of what would look cool in real life. Source: every Final Fantasy game known to man.

Op here

LOL does that mean you store an axe somewhere?...might come in handy, right? xD

Source: every Final Fantasy game known to man. Oh, definite amen to that. Though I got my own set of clothes that I like to think of as my secret FF outfit...that might either be a good thing or not, depending how you look at it >_>;

I wear shoes that you can always run away in - in case of zombies, ninjas, kidnapping, or other such case where I would need to flee.

I don't really think you need to "grow out" of thinking this way. The way I figure it, you can think any way you want as long as you're getting your job and responsibilities done. Why police your thoughts so much?

I'm always too hard on myself =/

We are our own worst critics. I'm pretty hard on myself too, OP. I think it takes a lot of patience and desire to retrain your brain and the way you think. Just keep trying. <3

I do the same sometimes but for Silent Hill. I make sure to wear a jacket with pockets I can put my flashlight in, and wear shoes that I can run in.

I think that kind of stuff is fun even if there is a degree of seriousness to it(I'm reeeally paranoid).

Hey, to give you credit at least you have a variety of clothes you can choose from if you're thinking what you're thinking. I only have two hoodies and a few jackets for me to choose from if I have a "What if X Character is comfortable with these?"

Wear what you want. No one can tell you what to wear or what to not wear. Now, if this is about public decency however...

I have no fashion sense either. Worse, I can't see anyone elses fashion sense either. Occasionally I'll see someone wearing a scarf in the summer and think, well that's got to be their style because there's no other reason they'd be wearing that, but that's pretty much the limit to what I think about.

Years and years ago I figured to stay away from anything too unusual looking. Jeans and T shirts stay in style more or less every year. They are nice and neutral and you can't really go wrong with them. When in doubt look at what some big box clothes store has on the shelves and that will give some indication of what people consider to be acceptable clothing.

The problem is that for the zombie apocalypse you need to have jean or leather covering most of your skin (bite protection) and a solid-yet-easy-to-run-in shoe. That rules out a lot of stuff. Channeling stylish fictional characters, on the other hand, sounds like a great way to pick clothes.
