No, I agree with you all the way on this, OP. That kind of petty stuff just makes me all kinds of uncomfortable. It's not funny to me at all.

Not familiar with this fandom in particular, but I totally agree in general. That's always made me really uncomfortable.

idk, I kind of agree with Dipper that "revenge is underrated".

but I'm also a petty dick, so there's that I guess

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel the same, OP.

Even the person a show gravitates (hur hur) us to side with has flaws, I suppose.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-09 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not familiar with the specific instance, but in general... it really depends for me. On the antagonist, on the nature of the humiliation, to what extent the protagonists instigate it. If Snidely Whiplash is getting out of the bath, trips on a cat, falls down the stairs into a barrel of honey, and is chased out of town by ants, that's funny. If Rebellious Minion #2 steals Snidely Whiplash's clothes and pushes down the stairs into a barrel of honey, etc., that's funny. If Dudley Do-Right steals Snidely Whiplash's-- No, actually, that's still funny, because it's Dudley Do-Right. But if a real fleshed-out supposed-to-be-sympathetic character pushes the villain down the stairs, then it's a little funny, but also, "Really? Is that necessary? Isn't that petty? Isn't there some more productive use of those resources?"

TL;DR I'm often okay with the narrative humiliating the villain when I wouldn't be okay with the protagonist doing it.

This is a great distiniction! Thanks for pointing it out for me, because you're right - I hate it when the villian is mocked or bullied or humiliated by the protagonists, but I like it when he brings his own destruction on himself through his own actions.

I don't like it either. All it does is lower the "good guys" to the antagonist's level. And give me major secondhand embarrassment.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-10 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I've only seen the first 9 episodes of this... he didn't seem like bad guy did they make him bad? Are we just supposed to hate him because Dipper wants Wendy?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-10 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
He was pretty terrible to Dipper in the 10th episode. He actually challenged a 12 year old to a fight (which led to Dipper trying to get a video game character to beat up Robbie) and only backed out of it at the last second after Dipper finally told him to just beat him up and get it over with. After that, they come to a reluctant truce.

The episode was actually pretty hilarious though. Rumble McSkirmish cracked me the hell up

(Anonymous) 2012-10-10 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
But Dipper kept provoking him, he also broke his cellphone. Robbie is a jerk but I don't think he's as big a jerk as the show wants him to be. I think it's just "lol Dipper wants Wendy so hate the guy who is in her age group and she herself chose to date!)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-10 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

In fairness, breaking the phone was accidental and Dipper immediately offered to pay for it but Robbie instead decided to threaten him with violence (and seriously, why would a 15/16 year old challenge a 12 year old to a fight? Especially one that's half their size? Jesus)

I agree that aside from that Robbie hasn't been that bad though

(Anonymous) 2012-10-10 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know. I was punched in the eye by a sixteen year old (guy) when I was thirteen, for brushing against his coat by accident. (I'm a girl)

I can see it happening.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-10 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Robbie continued to act bitter over Dipper's accidental insults when they first met and he behaved like a typical teenage jerk. I think the real reason he challenged Dipper to a "fight" in episode 10 was because Dipper busted Robbie's phone, not because they both like Wendy.

Robbie's an asshole but I don't think he's that big of an asshole. If he was, he would have went ahead and punched Dipper when he had the chance.

Not familiar with the fandom either, but yeah, I hate that too. But then, I tend to like villains. I'd much rather the villains lose for interesting reasons.

Funny reasons are okay too, though not as fun for me. But Good Guys getting to be dicks because they're the Good Guys, not so much. Unless "Hey, the good guys just acted like shitheads" is a major plot point/philosophical dilemma or something.

I kind of have to agree here. Even though this particular incident was technically the fault of Robbie just being abnormally klutzy, it was still crafted as a sort of comeuppance for "swiping the girl out from under the main character". But if you saw the episode, you'd know that all he did was ask her out nicely and she agreed. Honestly, Wendy laughing at him along with the others made her seem like quite the jerk and possibly a perfect match for Robbie.

You could argue it was an indirect punishment for Robbie acting like a jerk and a rival to the main character but, again, if you saw the episode you'd also know that in the same episode, Stan was being an even bigger jerk to all kinds of people and was taking their money. Yet his comeuppance was a lot more fitting for his crimes.

Unfortunately, I have a habit of being attracted to the antagonist whose punishment is far worse than his/her crime so it isn't really anything new to me, just annoying.

I'm starting to get tired of this. I love Gravity Falls but the Wendy plots are really making Dipper look like an ass. Especially since he is actively pursuing someone who is already in a relationship. I just can't see Dipper as a better boyfriend for her. More so after that episode where Wendy states she didn't break it off with one of her exes and he still thinks they're dating. He calls and she just ignores him. They're not that different.

Plus I'm feeling bad for Mabel. The first episode shows her as sort of 'boy crazy' and that it was a bad thing. Yet now that Dipper is doing it, it's okay? Just ugh.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-10 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
but the show doesn't really portray it as okay. there have been several instances where Dipper's blind love for Wendy has had some pretty bad consequences (in one case, it led to Mabel being unable to win Waddles and she becomes so miserable that she bangs her head against a totem pole for a month straight until they go back in time to reverse it and in another case, he accidentally attracts the attention of the Summerween monster who threatens to kill them because Dipper dissed the holiday to seem cool to Wendy)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-10 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
But Dipper never really learns his lesson. He keeps doing it. He was willing to let Mabel and her friends die just so he could hang out with Wendy. It's really not doing his character any favors.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-10 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, although in my case it's wayyyy too reminiscent of schoolyard bullying.

I have a hard time watching anyone get humiliated at all, regardless of who's doing it or how it's portrayed, so I feel your pain. So. Much. To such a degree that when I was little, I used to hide under the blankets as those kind of scenes like some people will do at the scary parts of horror movies. Unfortunately, I have older brothers who are never going to let me live it down. :-p

Torn between "It's funny to see the jerk suffer because it's just fiction" and "yeah that kinda is jerky of the protagonist." So I guess in-canon it's jerky, but meta it can be funny?
