TBH, her fans remind me more of Snape fans- everything she's ever done is really truly okay because one thing happened to her when she was young, and the love of her life died.

...But yeah.

I lost all sympathy for her when she blamed her whole life on what, a twelve year-old? She's kind of getting better recently [spoilers for season 2] her letting Henry leave her is a good example, but I'm still not really fond of her.

The motivations for characters on this show never make any sense.

Regina's going to blame a 12 year old rather than her mother. She's going to kill the one person she loves most to get revenge. Dumb.

Charming's King wants to ruin his life because he didn't marry a princess who didn't want to marry him either. Dumb.

*Spoilers* Charming's mom giving up her life so Snow can be cured, when they live in a land of magic (no seriously they would have had all the time in the world to look for a cure) and she needs it immediately. And seriously not being able to have kids biologically isn't the end of the world, they could always adopt... unless this show has something against adoption.

I really just think there's so much bad writing. But I like the concept, so what can I do?

i agree. i really don't bother much with OUAT fandom because everywhere i go there are 'evil regals' like that :/ the show has some awesome female characters and i wanna talk about them! not how misunderstood regina is.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised to hear that this is the case, if only because the Loki fangirls who completely forgive everything he's done post-Avengers tend to be of the "he's so pretty and sexy, he needs love!" variety. It's not the sort of thing I'd expect for a villain who's an older woman.

I quite like her as a villain. She's not flawless (nothing in the show is), but she's just...interesting. And pretty, but in a less soft, less "Hollywood" sort of way. And I like her scar.

This isn't really that uncommon. I've been in multiple fandoms where people will overidentify with and woobify a female villain or gray area character, at the expense of the 'good guys.' It's pretty typical? Female villains get leather pantsed a lot as well. In fact, most big female villains I can think of have a decent sized leather pantsed-fandom.

People do this with any character that's attractive, though. Men do this with female villains, too.

I think she's awesome as a villain and I'm sort of sad to see that she's going to be redeemed. Besides, she raped and muredered poor hot Graham and I'm still mourning him. I wasn't sorry at all when Henry dumped her. But I guess I'm okay if she's eventually one of the good ones, even if I'll miss her crazy self.

Otoh, justifying or forgiving fictional villains isn't something new.

I think the show just hates attractive guys most of the ones I thought were cute are mostly dead.

I keep hoping she won't be completely redeemed. I like her best as a very selfish person who just wants some love but on her terms. From that PoV, even letting Henry go with Charming still serves her ends. She knows from her own experience that holding him tightly will make him hate her, and that's the opposite of what she wants, so she is trying another tactic, rather than one that's been absolutely proven to fail.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-17 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, so much this, OP.
(I submitted a very similar secret to yours, but it hasn't shown up yet.)

I actually like the character, but the fans annoy me.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-17 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It looks like they're working on a redemption storyline for her this season, and I have....mixed feelings. There's a part of me that would really like Regina to come over to the good side, but there's also a part of me that can't get past some of the things she's done. Top of the list - what she did to Graham/the Huntman and ripping her own father's heart out.

I think I'd like the redemption story more if they didn't try to give her a sad past to try to justify her actions.

I'm kind of torn about it, tbh. It's not often that female villains are the ones getting woobified, so I think that's kind of neat? On the other hand, it's a pet peeve in general to see villains get treated as if they did no wrong at all ever.

As a Snape fangirl, I always loved him because he was so flawed and mean and screwed up, and I feel similarly about Regina. She's a great villain, and they've given her enough sympathy and humanity to make her interesting, instead of simply cookie-cutter evil for its own sake. But even if they give her the redemption arc, she has a whole lot of cruel, nasty shit to answer for, no matter how tragic her back story.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-17 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
You know what annoys me? That little shit son of hers is all like "you're evil" and "you don't love me" for the first season and then first episode of the second season then BAM! if you love me you'll do this for me. She had her magic back, she should have just done the villain then and put a subtle spell on that brat so he'd love her.

Although I think my opinion is greatly informed on how the first season shat on adopted families. >:(

You actually had to mention fans in a completely different fandom, of a character who has been a lightning rod for wank, to make your point, OP? You should get a doctor to check out that butthurt of yours, OP. Or maybe buy a box of tissues. Some fans gloss over the terrible actions of villainous characters, yes. That's been a part of fandom for decades. It's no different than those fans who are so quick to ignore the dickish behaviour of heroic characters, just because they like the heroes.

Fans are biased towards and against certain characters. The fact that you felt the need to single out two specific groups of fans, and let their actions influence how you enjoy something, speaks more to your own insecurity than anything else. If you're not able to enjoy something because other people enjoy something different, then the problem is with you, not them. Ignore them and find fans who share your views. There are bound to be some. You'll have a better time with like fans.

You know what's funny? There are so many secrets bitching about Loki and Loki's fanbase, yet I can't recall the last time I saw a secret posted that bitched about the anti-Loki fans/fanbase.

I agree to a degree. She's my favourite character, and, while I enjoy watching her be evil (the same way I enjoyed watching Whilelmina Slater be evil on Ugly Betty), I also like it when she reaps what she sows and everyone turns against her. It's not like she doesn't deserve it, and you won't catch me justifying all the crap she's pulled because of her ~secret pain~

However, I DO take offense at all the "Henry is not your son" bullshit, because HELL NO, you can burn her at the stake for everything else she's done, but clearly Henry didn't get to be 10 years old alive and well and healthy on his own, so the ONE thing I wish the other characters would acknowledge is that she was the one who fed him, raised him, and changed his fucking diapers for all that time.

A lot of her fans drive me crazy. There's a bunch of Henry-hate going around because of the latest episode. Not that I'm comfortable with what Henry did, but I don't see why I should be feeling bad for poor, innocent fucking Regina.

Regina is my favorite character purely because there seems to be so many facets to her, but holy shit her fanbase scares me.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I like Regina, but Man-Oh-Man. The reason she was given for hating Snow, well, I find it utterly ridiculousness. Snow was a child, and Cora manipulated the situation to find out what she needed to. Also... Cora is the one who ripped Daniel's heart out and killed him, not freaking Snow. It would make much more sense to me, if Regina held that grudge against her mother instead.

Regina is my favourite character on the show and I consider myself an "Evil Regal" but I do not in any way condone her actions. She's pretty fucking evil, and that's what I love about her. We don't have that many awesome female villains on tv and I love the new take on the fairytale character.

I've just always loved the bad girls, and Lana Parrilla's acting choices are so fascinating to me.

And I don't like the redemption story either, fwiw.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL. The fandom is horrible for MANY reasons, not just that.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
They're a little extreme. But her haters are vocal too, calling anyone who likes her a psychopath. Rumbelle fans go crazy on anyone who suggests their pairing might be unhealthy.

People posting 3000 word dissertations on how they couldn't prove it but were absolutely SURE that some other girl in the fandom was a crazy asshole. Racism, sexism, ship wars, stan wars. You name it.
