...because you can only ever like Marvel or DC, and if the two are ever under the same room outside the protective holiness of a store, the world will explode?

Or am I missing something besides the Marvel vs DC attitude?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha ha. My husband makes fun of me for separating my DC and Marvel comics into separate boxes.

But seriously, Anon, you can like Batman, too. The last 3 movies have even been really good!

It might be that, or it might be that for some inexplicable reason fandom and the world at large thinks that if you like XYZ comicverse you MUST like the movies.

Happens to me all the time with Batman. I *don't* like the movies. They're grim and dark and take themselves way too damn seriously, imo. Some people like that, and I recognize that the movies are well-acted and edited, etc. But that's not what I want from a comic book movie. However, I am a big fan of various runs of the Batman comics and extended Batfamily comics. When I tell people I love the comics but don't like the Nolan movies it usually creates a negative reaction.

I love both Marvel and the Marvel movies, so I haven't had that problem with that side of fandom, but I know people in exactly the same situation as me and Batman/Nolan!Batman, who have largely received similar reactions.

It's very weird, actually. The MCU and the Nolanverse Batman are pretty much the only places where fans of the books are EXPECTED to like the movies...

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
And it's things like Nightwings ass that make me so glad I picked up Batman rather than X-men.

Makes sense to me!

(Anonymous) 2012-10-18 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
That is a perfectly valid reason! I'm sure there are nice asses over at Marvel* but there's no need to be greedy.

*recs?

Cause nope

Seriously. I picked up Batman instead of X-Men and they wouldn't even let me in the theaters. I wasn't wearing my Batman tshirt or anything, they just KNEW.

I thought OP just meant that there are a lot more Marvel movies than DC ones, so they're glad they prefer Marvel. Which does not seem that strange an opinion, but okay.

I mean, I know what OP was going for, but that's not where my mind went I guess.

Holy shit, you can only like one or the other? Damn it. I knew I was doing something wrong.

However, I will admit to feeling really rotten about the Ant-Man movie... for really petty reasons and I feel ashamed of myself. Oh man, that movie.

Because it HAS to be one or the other.

Though, given a low money situation, I'd rather go pick up Sandman.

I keep reading Antman as Antiman..../relevant

(Anonymous) 2012-10-19 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I think I know what you mean, because I was always more of a DC girl and it makes part of me a little more sad inside every time Marvel gets a great movie and DC doesn't. It's not that I don't like the Marvel movies, but they're not the characters I was already attached to.

But the reason I liked DC more was that they tended to be less dark and (to my mind) pointlessly angsty than Marvel. The treatment of mutants in that universe might be realistic, but if you've got people with frikkin' laser beams outta their eyes realism is less of a concern, you know? DC always made me feel more uplifted.

If there was ever a movie like the JLA series (but not Obsidian Age b/c Plas was awesome and badass but too depressing) or Batman/Superman (c'mon guys, I'm in it for the bromance but someone's gotta realize that a book with a slash in the freakin' title will find an audience) I would die of happiness ;_;

"Do me a favor, Clark, lose the sense of humor."
"Do us all a favor, Bruce, BUY a sense of humor."

You can like both, you know...

Granted, the last few Batman films have been pretty mediocre for Comic Book Fans, but that can always change in the future.

The first thing I thought reading this secret, was "I don't get it"

Then, reading the reason on the comments, I went "This is stupid"

(Anonymous) 2012-10-19 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
heh, well there's plenty of good incarnations of Batman, besides the comics. Try the animated cartoon from the 90's if you don't believe me. Classic stuff.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-10-19 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
HEY GUYS I do actually like both, but I have this strange inclination to prefer one over the other, isn't that weird? And funnily enough, it's the one that served as my gateway into comics!

P.S. DC fans, I hope shit gets sorted out at your end eventually. I'd like to see Roy Harper and Nightwing getting hoyay on each other on a big screen someday.
