Choosing a laptop

(Anonymous) 2012-10-19 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to decide on my first laptop and I finally narrowed it down to two after weeks of research, and I'd really appreciate some opinions on which one sounds superior. My main priority is gaming and speedy everyday usage (yes, I know the Intel i5 or i7 with NVIDIA graphics would be best, but that's out of my price range).

One is an Intel third-gen i5-3210 dual-core with integrated Intel 4000 graphics. The other is an AMD A8-3520 quad-core with Radeon 6470 graphics and 1gb of dedicated video memory. They're similar in every other way (price, display, construction, HDD space, etc), so it's basically a toss up between the Intel's good CPU and crappy graphics, and the Dell's good graphics and crappy CPU. They both should play all the 3D games I have in mind, but I don't know which one will play them better and hold up longer before I need to upgrade again. I've been driving myself nuts over this, so, um, help?

Laptops are rarely good for a lot of intense gaming, especially if any part of your guts fits the description "crappy."

A desktop would be better in general, yeah, but my games aren't Skyrim-level demanding, just circa 2011-early-2012 stuff that I haven't been able to play because my current desktop makes even a budget laptop look like Alienware.

Are you set on a laptop? And do you need it now?

You can build a gaming PC that can handle Borderlands 2 for around $500 (http://www.gamersnexus.net/pc-builds/46-pcbuildupg/932-borderlands-pc-build).*

www.gamersnexus.net has really friendly staff and forum members and helped me build my own computer for the first time too. I highly recommend them if you're thinking of trying it out.

*Their builds usually reference newegg combo deals which are very transient but if you're patient, you should be able to find similar deals.

Ooh, that's a good resource, thank you.

What's the RAM on them? How many programs will be running at the same time? The Intel will be able to handle multiple programs and videos better than the AMD. You can't get both good graphics and speedy everyday usage with either laptop. What do you want more, graphics or speed?

Here's a smiliar question from earlier this month. Maybe it'll help? http://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/684496.html?thread=588976848#cmt588976848

Both have memory expandable to 8gb, which I'll be doing on purchase. I don't run more than five applications at once and Firefox the most demanding one at that, but I also don't want the thing slowing to a crawl just because I'm not running a game. That question (and Passmark) was a great help narrowing it down to these two, but like you said, I don't know whether speed or graphics would be the better investment.

I have a six-year-old laptop. I think when I got this laptop, the CPU was one of the best at the time (but not the best), the RAM was upgraded (but not maxed out) and the graphics card was switched to a dedicated graphics card (average card but top upgrade possible). When I install new games, it is the graphics card +/or RAM that limits what games I can play, not the CPU. When I install new programs, it usually recommends more RAM than I have. The programs that require more RAM lag when I run it with other programs.

I think graphics might be a better investment if you're going to be gaming.

Ah, so the CPU isn't necessarily as important a factor as the graphics or RAM when it comes to games; I was fretting about that. Thank you, that's very good to know.

I shelled out a lot of money for a Sony VAIO and it's been good for running graphics programs like Painter and Photoshop and such, not sure about gaming capabilities but

http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666441823

It was super expensive though :/
Like... my car cost the same amount of money seriously

Oh yeah and the HDMI output, 1080p and USB3 jacks factored into buying it as well

Why did you shell out that much money for a laptop? You could have gotten a desktop for the same price that would have suited photoshop programs much better. Was it really necessary that it be portable?

Re: Choosing a laptop

(Anonymous) 2012-10-19 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
She probably WAS looking for portability if she was buying a laptop.

Considering the programs she says she uses, though, why? Editing programs on the go seems unnecessary, and it's also pretty difficult.

OP

That's a real beauty (third-gen i7, umph), but for that kind of money, I'd definitely need high-end NVIDIA graphics and a bigger screen.

My current (for another couple of weeks, until the new one I just bought arrives) laptop is a Dell. I do not recommend Dell laptops. I have had so many hardware issues with this thing, from a faulty power jack preventing my battery from charging, to the hinge breaking so I can't close the computer, to the hard drive randomly becoming unseated. Maybe Dell has figured out how to make better laptops in the couple of years since I got mine, but be careful; you can't play games (or do much of anything) if your computer can't locate its own ass long enough to turn on. I'd err on the side of reliability and decent innards over super graphics, if it were me.

Re: Choosing a laptop

(Anonymous) 2012-10-19 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, I worried about that. The other laptop is a Samsung, which seems to have a more consistent laptop rep than Dell. (Though neither is as good as Lenovo). Thanks for the warning.

Re: Choosing a laptop

(Anonymous) 2012-10-19 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much this. I only recommend Dell if you're also buying an extended warrently (the full coverage one) and are experienced (or are ok with becoming experienced) with their tech support.

I continue to buy them because my laptop tends to be in high humidity conditions and I've had at least 5 hdd crashes in the last 3 years all of which were replaced for free by Dell. Didn't even need to send a technician for the last 2. Just shipped me the hdd directly. Only 2 days of downtime.
