People giving money:

Today is pretty important in Norway it is "Tv Aksjonen" (The Norwegian version of Comic Reliefish)

We give all the money (this year) to Amnesty's campaign to stand up against injustice. And our Radio Channel just got in 100.000£ earmarked to Amnesty's work to help Gay, Lesbians, bisexual and Transgender people around the world! And 18.000.000£ at last count for the TV part of it.

Which made me think, do your country do anything similar?

Yeah, in the Netherlands they do a thing called Serious Request in the six days leading up to Christmas. Three DJ's from one of our public radio networks go into a 'glass house' and fast for the duration of their stay, and broadcast radio 24 hours a day. People can request songs for donations. It usually brings in millions of euros (over 8.5 million last year). It's always really good, it seems like the whole country gets involved!

You guys do that too? Awesome! It's the highlight of December, for sure.

Yeah, I agree! It's been happening since 2004 I think, and since then it's basically become equivalent in my mind with the festive season. It wouldn't be the same without it, and I always request a couple of songs, without even caring if they get played.

I think a couple of countries in Europe do it too, definitely Belgium.

The easiest way to get Norwegians to give money is to make sure each county (and city)have the amount they give on a list, then make it public, no one wants to be beaten by another part of the country, which makes us give more.

Ahahaha, that's brilliant. Those means definitely justify the ends!

As someone from America, we have telethons for lots of different causes, but I can honestly say that I have never heard of a collection for the LGBTQ community. Unfortunately, too many Americans are ass backwards on this issue. :(

Really? I've always found it weird that Norway where Church and State is one we kinda went, "gays can't marry? We didn't know this, let us make it happen!" and that was it really, we have discussions about same sex couples having children, but more along the lines of who are supposed to pay for it. And surrogates aren't legal in Norway for anyone.

(I am still pretty shocked about the way you guys do your election campaign to be honest, but it is not my place to tell another culture how to act)

Most of us are pretty shocked/disgusted by our elections too.

In fact, the first thing I thought of was the Salvation Army bellringers. Probably the most prevalent and recognizable charities around and...yeah.

"Musikhjälpen" in Swedish Radio P3. Each year they put three show hosts in a glasscage in one one of our larger cities, for a 24/7 show for the benefit of various help-organisations. People pay x amount for a song request (50 SEK minimum IIRC) and auctions of celebrities stuff, like instruments and tour gear and other things. Last year it was fighting child trafficking and before that hunger and malaria.
This is the only thing I'm donating to atm. (Used to give to Greenpeace, due to persistent person.)

OMG! We totally stole that from you guys! The radio part, they do exactly the same! Except it's 20NOK (but that sum is automatic) for each song request.

The TV part collect their money with auctions and people walking from house to house, and you can call in or transfer whatever amount you want.

Actually, we stole it from the Dutch, as you can see from the anon commenter upthread. Original title "Serious Request" and same concept as our versions.
Can't wait for the next round. This year it's for clean water.

In France we have a big annual Téléthon which lasts three days, with a nearly constant broadcast on television and charity events nation-wide. The money only goes to the same association (which fights muscular distrophy, and many orphan diseases) every year though, but it funds research and every day care.

We also have Sidaction and Solidays, which are much more low-key events but still major, they concentrate on fighting AIDS.
