You know what sucks?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Statutory rape laws. :(

Re: You know what sucks?

Ikr?

Someday I hope they'll take them off the books like they did the sodomy laws in a lot of places. I don't need or want the government in my bedroom.

Re: You know what sucks?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
It's just ridiculous when two people are close in age. The government needs to back off.

Some laws provide exceptions for that

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

Some places have "close-in-age" exceptions to the laws. I think those forms of the law are quite sane and serve a purpose: protect kids from predation by adults while avoiding criminalizing consensual sex between teenagers. Repealing all statutory rape laws scares the bejeebus out of me but making it a crime for to kids the same age to have consensual sex is completely useless.

(I live in a state where it is a FELONY to have sex with anyone under 16 with no exceptions, which presumably means two 16 year-olds can have sex with each and both be convicted of felonies. Fortunately, I moved here when I was 27 so I didn't have to worry about that.)

Re: Some laws provide exceptions for that

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I believe it's called the "Romeo and Juliet clause", where if a minor has sex with someone within three years of their age, it's not statutory rape. And yeah, in California there not only is *18* the age of consent and there's no Romeo and Juliet clause, but two teenagers can technically be convicted of statutory raping each other, as you mentioned.

Re: Some laws provide exceptions for that

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
NA

Actually, California does have a close-in-age exception, but it only reduces the crime from a felony to a misdemeanor.

Re: You know what sucks?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
...not sure if I want you to elaborate on that or not.

Re: You know what sucks?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm 16, and my boyfriend is 18. We live in California. :(

Re: You know what sucks?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry.

Re: You know what sucks?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's ridiculous... some people have been placed on the registered sex offenders list for the rest of their lives because of this, and there's nothing to distinguish them from REAL sex offenders. Like, being a couple of months different in age could ruin a life. It's messed up.

Re: You know what sucks?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of side eye this every time I see it. So, you don't want to be put on a sex offender list because of a couple months of age difference. The solution? DON'T FUCKING HAVE SEX UNTIL YOU'RE BOTH OF AGE.

FFS. Sex is not a crucial part of life. If it is illegal to have sex with the person you want to have sex with, and you know damn well it will only be for a few months/years more...I have no sympathy for you.

Re: You know what sucks?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
You're kidding, right? Sex IS a pretty damn crucial part of life. It's our instinct, our nature. Just because there's a dumbass law that a few crazy people will enforce doesn't mean you should shut down your sex life.

The law is there for a reason but it's so general that it should be refined. And in the case of someone having sex with a consenting partner a few months younger than them, they should NOT be placed on a sex offenders list for the rest of their life. Jaywalking may be illegal for a reason but it would be fucking nuts to get locked up for life for it, wouldn't it?

So you're a minor and your boyfriend is a legal adult. Them's the breaks. You both should try dating people your own age.

Re: You know what sucks?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Plus, in terms of your average 16 year old and your average 18 year old...that's a big difference in terms of outlook/maturity/societal expectations. What is a high school senior doing dating a high school freshman/sophomore anyway?

Re: You know what sucks?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
NA

Um, I graduated high school at 17 because I have a summer birthday, but there were plenty of people in my year who were 18, and at least one who was 19. So there's not necessarily a big difference, especially if you met as equals in some non-school context (club, camp, job, whatever). I think statutory rape laws have their place, but seriously, I don't think "date someone your own age" is a reasonable thing to say when the difference is two years.

Re: You know what sucks?

Right, because people are entirely interchangeable, so OP should just swap out her boyfriend for a more acceptable model. People totally work that way.

Re: You know what sucks?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
If you want to, just have sex, be safe, and don't let anyone find out you did/are doing it. And if someone accuses you of doing it, DENY DENY DENY.

Re: You know what sucks?

I was going to say vacuums and then read the rest.

Now I feel oddly disappointed even though you have a genuine problem. I feel like a horrible person.

Re: You know what sucks?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
A genuine problem? More like a genuine annoyance. Not being able to have sex =/= problem.

Re: You know what sucks?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just gonna quote Dictionary.com.

"Any question or matter involving doubt, uncertainty, or difficulty."

Doesn't matter how "small".

You're kind of coming off as an ass but then again, so am I. Guess we're even.

Re: You know what sucks?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, not a problem for you because you're just some uppity ace. some people have libidos, loser.

Re: You know what sucks?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Mm-hm. I do have a libido, but apparently it's messed up somehow because it's not some all-powerful force that leaves me completely obsessed with sex and unable to even fathom a relationship without it. Strange, no doctor has ever said anything about that.

Re: You know what sucks?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the anon who originally said the problem thing. I am an ace and while I think the anon you replied to is an ass, for sure, you're a bigger one right now.

How about we all agree to disagree and stop being assholes to one another because we're getting seriously off topic.

I swear, I make a joke about vacuums and being a horrible person and it turns into this. Super.

Re: You know what sucks?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you're clearly lacking in maturity here. It might be a good thing that you have to wait two years.

I'm personally sick of some folks reacting to asexuals' comments as if asexuals are oppressing sexual people throughout the world.
